2 Behold, G2396 I G1473 Paul G3972 say G3004 unto you, G5213 that G3754 if G1437 ye be circumcised, G4059 Christ G5547 shall profit G5623 you G5209 nothing. G3762
But G1161 Israel, G2474 which followed G1377 after the law G3551 of righteousness, G1343 hath G5348 not G3756 attained G5348 to G1519 the law G3551 of righteousness. G1343 Wherefore? G1302 Because G3754 they sought it not G3756 by G1537 faith, G4102 but G235 as G5613 it were by G1537 the works G2041 of the law. G3551 For G1063 they stumbled G4350 at that stumblingstone; G3037 G4348
But G235 neither G3761 Titus, G5103 who G3588 was with G4862 me, G1698 being G5607 a Greek, G1672 was compelled G315 to be circumcised: G4059 And G1161 that because of G1223 false brethren G5569 unawares brought in, G3920 who G3748 came in privily G3922 to spy out G2684 our G2257 liberty G1657 which G3739 we have G2192 in G1722 Christ G5547 Jesus, G2424 that G2443 they might bring G2615 us G2248 into bondage: G2615 To whom G3739 we gave place G1502 by subjection, G5292 no, not G3761 for G4314 an hour; G5610 that G2443 the truth G225 of the gospel G2098 might continue G1265 with G4314 you. G5209
For G1161 I testify G3143 again G3825 to every G3956 man G444 that is circumcised, G4059 that G3754 he is G2076 a debtor G3781 to do G4160 the whole G3650 law. G3551 Christ G5547 is become of no effect unto you, G575 G2673 whosoever of you G3748 are justified G1344 by G1722 the law; G3551 ye are fallen from G1601 grace. G5485
For G1063 I bear G3140 them G846 record G3140 that G3754 they have G2192 a zeal G2205 of God, G2316 but G235 not G3756 according G2596 to knowledge. G1922 For G1063 they being ignorant G50 of God's G2316 righteousness, G1343 and G2532 going about G2212 to establish G2476 their own G2398 righteousness, G1343 have G5293 not G3756 submitted themselves G5293 unto the righteousness G1343 of God. G2316
Him G5126 would G2309 Paul G3972 have to go forth G1831 with G4862 him; G846 and G2532 took G2983 and circumcised G4059 him G846 because G1223 of the Jews G2453 which G3588 were G5607 in G1722 those G1565 quarters: G5117 for G1063 they knew G1492 all G537 that G3754 his G846 father G3962 was G5225 a Greek. G1672 And G1161 as G5613 they went through G1279 the cities, G4172 they delivered G3860 them G846 the decrees G1378 for to keep, G5442 that were ordained G2919 of G5259 the apostles G652 and G2532 elders G4245 which G3588 were at G1722 Jerusalem. Commentary on Galatians 5 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 5
In this chapter the apostle comes to make application of his foregoing discourse. He begins it with a general caution, or exhortation (v. 1), which he afterwards enforces by several considerations (v. 2-12). He then presses them to serious practical godliness, which would be the best antidote against the snares of their false teachers; particularly,
Gal 5:1-12
In the former part of this chapter the apostle cautions the Galatians to take heed of the judaizing teachers, who endeavoured to bring them back under the bondage of the law. He had been arguing against them before, and had largely shown how contrary the principles and spirit of those teachers were to the spirit of the gospel; and now this is as it were the general inference or application of all that discourse. Since it appeared by what had been said that we can be justified only by faith in Jesus Christ, and not by the righteousness of the law, and that the law of Moses was no longer in force, nor Christians under any obligation to submit to it, therefore he would have them to stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and not to be again entangled with the yoke of bondage. Here observe,
Gal 5:13-26
In the latter part of this chapter the apostle comes to exhort these Christians to serious practical godliness, as the best antidote against the snares of the false teachers. Two things especially he presses upon them:-
