9 A little G3398 leaven G2219 leaveneth G2220 the whole G3650 lump. G5445
Be G4105 not G3361 deceived: G4105 evil G2556 communications G3657 corrupt G5351 good G5543 manners. G2239
And G2532 he charged G1291 them, G846 saying, G3004 Take heed, G3708 beware G991 of G575 the leaven G2219 of the Pharisees, G5330 and G2532 of the leaven G2219 of Herod. G2264
In G1722 the mean time, G3739 when there were gathered together G1996 an innumerable multitude G3461 of people, G3793 insomuch that G5620 they trode G2662 one upon another, G240 he began G756 to say G3004 unto G4314 his G846 disciples G3101 first of all, G4412 Beware G4337 ye G1438 of G575 the leaven G2219 of the Pharisees, G5330 which G3748 is G2076 hypocrisy. G5272
It is G2076 like G3664 leaven, G2219 which G3739 a woman G1135 took G2983 and hid G1470 in G1519 three G5140 measures G4568 of meal, G224 till G2193 G3757 the whole G3650 was leavened. G2220
Your G5216 glorying G2745 is not G3756 good. G2570 Know ye G1492 not G3756 that G3754 a little G3398 leaven G2219 leaveneth G2220 the whole G3650 lump? G5445 Purge out G1571 therefore G3767 the old G3820 leaven, G2219 that G2443 ye may be G5600 a new G3501 lump, G5445 as G2531 ye are G2075 unleavened. G106 For G1063 even G2532 Christ G5547 our G2257 passover G3957 is sacrificed G2380 for G5228 us: G2257
Then G1161 Jesus G2424 said G2036 unto them, G846 Take heed G3708 and G2532 beware G4337 of G575 the leaven G2219 of the Pharisees G5330 and G2532 of the Sadducees. G4523 And G1161 they reasoned G1260 among G1722 themselves, G1438 saying, G3004 It is because G3754 we have taken G2983 no G3756 bread. G740 Which when G1161 Jesus G2424 perceived, G1097 he said G2036 unto them, G846 O ye of little faith, G3640 why G5101 reason ye G1260 among G1722 yourselves, G1438 because G3754 ye have brought G2983 no G3756 bread? G740 Do ye G3539 not yet G3768 understand, G3539 neither G3761 remember G3421 the five G4002 loaves G740 of the five thousand, G4000 and G2532 how many G4214 baskets G2894 ye took up? G2983 Neither G3761 the seven G2033 loaves G740 of the four thousand, G5070 and G2532 how many G4214 baskets G4711 ye took up? G2983 How G4459 is it that G3754 ye do G3539 not G3756 understand G3539 that I spake G2036 it not G3756 to you G5213 concerning G4012 bread, G740 that ye should beware G4337 of G575 the leaven G2219 of the Pharisees G5330 and G2532 of the Sadducees? G4523 Then G5119 understood they G4920 how that G3754 he bade G2036 them not G3756 beware G4337 of G575 the leaven G2219 of bread, G740 but G235 of G575 the doctrine G1322 of the Pharisees G5330 and G2532 of the Sadducees. Commentary on Galatians 5 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 5
In this chapter the apostle comes to make application of his foregoing discourse. He begins it with a general caution, or exhortation (v. 1), which he afterwards enforces by several considerations (v. 2-12). He then presses them to serious practical godliness, which would be the best antidote against the snares of their false teachers; particularly,
Gal 5:1-12
In the former part of this chapter the apostle cautions the Galatians to take heed of the judaizing teachers, who endeavoured to bring them back under the bondage of the law. He had been arguing against them before, and had largely shown how contrary the principles and spirit of those teachers were to the spirit of the gospel; and now this is as it were the general inference or application of all that discourse. Since it appeared by what had been said that we can be justified only by faith in Jesus Christ, and not by the righteousness of the law, and that the law of Moses was no longer in force, nor Christians under any obligation to submit to it, therefore he would have them to stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and not to be again entangled with the yoke of bondage. Here observe,
Gal 5:13-26
In the latter part of this chapter the apostle comes to exhort these Christians to serious practical godliness, as the best antidote against the snares of the false teachers. Two things especially he presses upon them:-
