34 Then Jacob H3290 gave H5414 Esau H6215 bread H3899 and pottage H5138 of lentiles; H5742 and he did eat H398 and drink, H8354 and rose up, H6965 and went his way: H3212 thus Esau H6215 despised H959 his birthright. H1062
Yea, they despised H3988 the pleasant H2532 land, H776 they believed H539 not his word: H1697
Then I commended H7623 mirth, H8057 because a man H120 hath no better thing H2896 under the sun, H8121 than to eat, H398 and to drink, H8354 and to be merry: H8055 for that shall abide H3867 with him of his labour H5999 the days H3117 of his life, H2416 which God H430 giveth H5414 him under the sun. H8121
And the LORD H3068 said H559 unto me, Cast H7993 it unto the potter: H3335 a goodly H145 price H3366 that I was prised at H3365 of them. And I took H3947 the thirty H7970 pieces of silver, H3701 and cast H7993 them to the potter H3335 in the house H1004 of the LORD. H3068
And G2532 they all G3956 with G575 one G3391 consent began G756 to make excuse. G3868 The first G4413 said G2036 unto him, G846 I have bought G59 a piece of ground, G68 and G2532 I must G2192 needs G318 go G1831 and G2532 see G1492 it: G846 I pray G2065 thee G4571 have G2192 me G3165 excused. G3868 And G2532 another G2087 said, G2036 I have bought G59 five G4002 yoke G2201 of oxen, G1016 and G2532 I go G4198 to prove G1381 them: G846 I pray G2065 thee G4571 have G2192 me G3165 excused. G3868 And G2532 another G2087 said, G2036 I have married G1060 a wife, G1135 and G2532 therefore G1223 G5124 I cannot G3756 G1410 come. G2064
Behold, G1492 ye despisers, G2707 and G2532 wonder, G2296 and G2532 perish: G853 for G3754 I G1473 work G2038 a work G2041 in G1722 your G5216 days, G2250 a work G2041 which G3739 ye shall G4100 in no wise G3364 believe, G4100 though G1437 a man G5100 declare it G1555 unto you. G5213
(For G1063 many G4183 walk, G4043 of whom G3739 I have told G3004 you G5213 often, G4178 and G1161 now G3568 tell G3004 you even G2532 weeping, G2799 that they are the enemies G2190 of the cross G4716 of Christ: G5547 Whose G3739 end G5056 is destruction, G684 whose G3739 God G2316 is their belly, G2836 and G2532 whose glory G1391 is in G1722 their G846 shame, G152 who G3588 mind G5426 earthly things.) G1919
Lest G3361 there be any G5100 fornicator, G4205 or G2228 profane person, G952 as G5613 Esau, G2269 who G3739 for G473 one G3391 morsel of meat G1035 sold G591 his G846 birthright. G4415 For G1063 ye know G2467 how G3754 that afterward, G2532 G3347 when he would G2309 have inherited G2816 the blessing, G2129 he was rejected: G593 for G1063 he found G2147 no G3756 place G5117 of repentance, G3341 though G2539 he sought G1567 it G846 carefully G1567 with G3326 tears. Commentary on Genesis 25 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 25
The sacred historian, in this chapter,
Gen 25:1-10
Abraham lived, after the marriage of Isaac, thirty-five years, and all that is recorded concerning him during the time lies here in a very few verses. We hear no more of God's extraordinary appearances to him or trials of him; for all the days, even of the best and greatest saints, are not eminent days, some slide on silently, and neither come nor go with observation; such were these last days of Abraham. We have here,
Gen 25:11-18
Immediately after the account of Abraham's death, Moses begins the story of Isaac (v. 11), and tells us where he dwelt and how remarkably God blessed him. Note, The blessing of Abraham did not die with him, but survived to all the children of the promise. But he presently digresses from the story of Isaac, to give a short account of Ishmael, forasmuch as he also was a son of Abraham, and God had made some promises concerning him, which it was requisite we should know the accomplishment of. Observe here what is said,
Gen 25:19-28
We have here an account of the birth of Jacob and Esau, the twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah: their entrance into the world was (which is not usual) one of the most considerable parts of their story; nor is much related concerning Isaac but what had reference to his father while he lived and to his sons afterwards. For Isaac seems not to have been a man of action, nor much tried, but to have spent his days in quietness and silence. Now concerning Jacob and Esau we are here told,
Gen 25:29-34
We have here a bargain made between Jacob and Esau about the birthright, which was Esau's by providence but Jacob's by promise. It was a spiritual privilege, including the excellency of dignity and the excellency of power, as well as the double portion, ch. 49:3. It seemed to be such a birthright as had then the blessing annexed to it, and the entail of the promise. Now see,
