22 And Enoch H2585 walked H1980 with H854 God H430 after H310 he begat H3205 H853 Methuselah H4968 three H7969 hundred H3967 years, H8141 and begat H3205 sons H1121 and daughters: H1323
G2532 That G1519 ye G5209 would walk G4043 worthy G516 of God, G2316 who hath called G2564 you G5209 unto G1519 his G1438 kingdom G932 and G2532 glory. G1391
These are the generations H8435 of Noah: H5146 Noah H5146 was a just H6662 man H376 and perfect H8549 in his generations, H1755 and Noah H5146 walked H1980 with God. H430
And I will walk H1980 among H8432 you, and will be H1961 your God, H430 and ye shall be H1961 my people. H5971
But G1161 if G1437 we walk G4043 in G1722 the light, G5457 as G5613 he G846 is G2076 in G1722 the light, G5457 we have G2192 fellowship G2842 one with another, G3326 G240 and G2532 the blood G129 of Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 his G846 Son G5207 cleanseth G2511 us G2248 from G575 all G3956 sin. G266
By faith G4102 Enoch G1802 was translated G3346 that he should G1492 not G3361 see G1492 death; G2288 and G2532 was G2147 not G3756 found, G2147 because G1360 God G2316 had translated G3346 him: G846 for G1063 before G4253 his G846 translation G3331 he had this testimony, G3140 that he pleased G2100 God. G2316 But G1161 without G5565 faith G4102 it is impossible G102 to please G2100 him: for G1063 he that cometh G4334 to God G2316 must G1163 believe G4100 that G3754 he is, G2076 and G2532 that he is G1096 a rewarder G3406 of them that diligently seek G1567 him. G846
But G1508 as G5613 God G2316 hath distributed G3307 to every man, G1538 as G5613 the Lord G2962 hath called G2564 every one, G1538 so G3779 let him walk. G4043 And G2532 so G3779 ordain I G1299 in G1722 all G3956 churches. G1577
Furthermore G3063 then G3767 we beseech G2065 you, G5209 brethren, G80 and G2532 exhort G3870 you by G1722 the Lord G2962 Jesus, G2424 that as G2531 ye have received G3880 of G3844 us G2257 how G4459 ye G5209 ought G1163 to walk G4043 and G2532 to please G700 God, G2316 so G2443 ye would abound G4052 more and more. G3123
That ye G5209 might walk G4043 worthy G516 of the Lord G2962 unto G1519 all G3956 pleasing, G699 being fruitful G2592 in G1722 every G3956 good G18 work, G2041 and G2532 increasing G837 in G1519 the knowledge G1922 of God; G2316
See G991 then G3767 that G4459 ye walk G4043 circumspectly, G199 not G3361 as G5613 fools, G781 but G235 as G5613 wise, G4680
And G1161 what G5101 agreement G4783 hath the temple G3485 of God G2316 with G3326 idols? G1497 for G1063 ye G5210 are G2075 the temple G3485 of the living G2198 God; G2316 as G2531 God G2316 hath said, G2036 G3754 I will dwell G1774 in G1722 them, G846 and G2532 walk in G1704 them; and G2532 I will be G2071 their G846 God, G2316 and G2532 they G846 shall be G2071 my G3427 people. G2992
For thou hast delivered H5337 my soul H5315 from death: H4194 wilt not thou deliver my feet H7272 from falling, H1762 that I may walk H1980 before H6440 God H430 in the light H216 of the living? H2416
Then said H559 the LORD H3068 unto Moses, H4872 Behold, I will rain H4305 bread H3899 from heaven H8064 for you; and the people H5971 shall go out H3318 and gather H3950 a certain rate H1697 every day, H3117 H3117 that I may prove H5254 them, whether they will walk H3212 in my law, H8451 or no.
Ye shall walk H3212 after H310 the LORD H3068 your God, H430 and fear H3372 him, and keep H8104 his commandments, H4687 and obey H8085 his voice, H6963 and ye shall serve H5647 him, and cleave H1692 unto him.
The LORD H3068 shall establish H6965 thee an holy H6918 people H5971 unto himself, as he hath sworn H7650 unto thee, if thou shalt keep H8104 the commandments H4687 of the LORD H3068 thy God, H430 and walk H1980 in his ways. H1870
That the LORD H3068 may continue H6965 his word H1697 which he spake H1696 concerning me, saying, H559 If thy children H1121 take heed H8104 to their way, H1870 to walk H3212 before H6440 me in truth H571 with all their heart H3824 and with all their soul, H5315 there shall not fail H3772 thee (said H559 he) a man H376 on the throne H3678 of Israel. H3478
I beseech H577 thee, O LORD, H3068 remember H2142 now how I have walked H1980 before H6440 thee in truth H571 and with a perfect H8003 heart, H3824 and have done H6213 that which is good H2896 in thy sight. H5869 And Hezekiah H2396 wept H1058 H1065 sore. H1419
And Enoch H2585 walked H1980 with God: H430 and he was not; for God H430 took H3947 him.
Draw H4900 me, we will run H7323 after H310 thee: the king H4428 hath brought H935 me into his chambers: H2315 we will be glad H1523 and rejoice H8055 in thee, we will remember H2142 thy love H1730 more than wine: H3196 the upright H4339 love H157 thee.
For all people H5971 will walk H3212 every one H376 in the name H8034 of his god, H430 and we will walk H3212 in the name H8034 of the LORD H3068 our God H430 for ever H5769 and ever. H5703
Then G3303 G3767 had G2192 the churches G1577 rest G1515 throughout G2596 all G3650 Judaea G2449 and G2532 Galilee G1056 and G2532 Samaria, G4540 and were edified; G3618 and G2532 walking in G4198 the fear G5401 of the Lord, G2962 and G2532 in the comfort G3874 of the Holy G40 Ghost, G4151 were multiplied. Commentary on Genesis 5 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 5
This chapter is the only authentic history extant of the first age of the world from the creation to the flood, containing (according to the verity of the Hebrew text) 1656 years, as may easily be computed by the ages of the patriarchs, before they begat that son through whom the line went down to Noah. This is one of those which the apostle calls "endless genealogies' (1 Tim. 1:4), for Christ, who was the end of the Old Testament law, was also the end of the Old Testament genealogies; towards him they looked, and in him they centered. The genealogy here recorded in inserted briefly in the pedigree of our Saviour (Lu. 3:36-38), and is of great use to show that Christ was the "seed of the woman' that was promised. We have here an account,
Gen 5:1-5
The first words of the chapter are the title or argument of the whole chapter: it is the book of the generations of Adam; it is the list or catalogue of the posterity of Adam, not of all, but only of the holy seed who were the substance thereof (Isa. 6:13), and of whom, as concerning the flesh, Christ came (Rom. 9:5), the names, ages, and deaths, of those that were the successors of the first Adam in the custody of the promise, and the ancestors of the second Adam. The genealogy begins with Adam himself. Here is,
Gen 5:6-20
We have here all that the Holy Ghost thought fit to leave upon record concerning five of the patriarchs before the flood, Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel, and Jared. There is nothing observable concerning any of these particularly, though we have reason to think they were men of eminence, both for prudence and piety, in their day: but in general,
Gen 5:21-24
The accounts here run on for several generations without any thing remarkable, or any variation but of the names and numbers; but at length there comes in one that must not be passed over so, of whom special notice must be taken, and that is Enoch, the seventh from Adam: the rest, we may suppose, did virtuously, but he excelled them all, and was the brightest star of the patriarchal age. It is but little that is recorded concerning him; but this little is enough to make his name great, greater than the name of the other Enoch, who had a city called by his name. Here are two things concerning him:-
Gen 5:25-27
Concerning Methuselah observe,
Gen 5:28-32
Here we have the first mention of Noah, of whom we shall read much in the following chapters. Observe,
