11 The lofty H1365 looks H5869 of man H120 shall be humbled, H8213 and the haughtiness H7312 of men H582 shall be bowed down, H7817 and the LORD H3068 alone shall be exalted H7682 in that day. H3117
And the mean man H120 shall be brought down, H7817 and the mighty man H376 shall be humbled, H8213 and the eyes H5869 of the lofty H1364 shall be humbled: H8213 But the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 shall be exalted H1361 in judgment, H4941 and God H410 that is holy H6918 shall be sanctified H6942 in righteousness. H6666
And in that day H3117 shall ye say, H559 Praise H3034 the LORD, H3068 call H7121 upon his name, H8034 declare H3045 his doings H5949 among the people, H5971 make mention H2142 that his name H8034 is exalted. H7682
For, behold, the day H3117 cometh, H935 that shall burn H1197 as an oven; H8574 and all the proud, H2086 yea, and all that do H6213 wickedly, H7564 shall be stubble: H7179 and the day H3117 that cometh H935 shall burn them up, H3857 saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts, H6635 that it shall leave H5800 them neither root H8328 nor branch. H6057
Behold, I am against thee, O thou most proud, H2087 saith H5002 the Lord H136 GOD H3069 of hosts: H6635 for thy day H3117 is come, H935 the time H6256 that I will visit H6485 thee. And the most proud H2087 shall stumble H3782 and fall, H5307 and none shall raise him up: H6965 and I will kindle H3341 a fire H784 in his cities, H5892 and it shall devour H398 all round about H5439 him.
Alas! H1945 for that day H3117 is great, H1419 so that H369 none is like it: it is even the time H6256 of Jacob's H3290 trouble; H6869 but he shall be saved H3467 out of it. For it shall come to pass in that day, H3117 saith H5002 the LORD H3068 of hosts, H6635 that I will break H7665 his yoke H5923 from off thy neck, H6677 and will burst H5423 thy bonds, H4147 and strangers H2114 shall no more serve H5647 themselves of him:
And the loftiness H1365 of man H120 shall be bowed down, H7817 and the haughtiness H7312 of men H582 shall be made low: H8213 and the LORD H3068 alone shall be exalted H7682 in that day. H3117
And it shall come to pass in that day, H3117 saith H5002 the LORD, H3068 that I will cut off H3772 thy horses H5483 out of the midst H7130 of thee, and I will destroy H6 thy chariots: H4818
In the day H3117 that thy walls H1447 are to be built, H1129 in that day H3117 shall the decree H2706 be far removed. H7368 In that day H3117 also he shall come H935 even to thee from Assyria, H804 and from the fortified H4693 cities, H5892 and from the fortress H4693 even to the river, H5104 and from sea H3220 to sea, H3220 and from mountain H2022 to mountain. H2022
In that day H3117 shalt thou not be ashamed H954 for all thy doings, H5949 wherein thou hast transgressed H6586 against me: for then I will take away H5493 out of the midst H7130 of thee them that rejoice H5947 in thy pride, H1346 and thou shalt no more H3254 be haughty H1361 because of my holy H6944 mountain. H2022
In that day H3117 it shall be said H559 to Jerusalem, H3389 Fear H3372 thou not: and to Zion, H6726 Let not thine hands H3027 be slack. H7503
And the LORD H3068 their God H430 shall save H3467 them in that day H3117 as the flock H6629 of his people: H5971 for they shall be as the stones H68 of a crown, H5145 lifted up as an ensign H5264 upon his land. H127
I tell G3004 you, G5213 this man G3778 went down G2597 to G1519 his G846 house G3624 justified G1344 rather than G2228 the other: G1565 for G3754 every one G3956 that exalteth G5312 himself G1438 shall be abased; G5013 and G1161 he that humbleth G5013 himself G1438 shall be exalted. G5312
That G3704 no G3361 G3956 flesh G4561 should glory G2744 in his presence. G1799 G846 But G1161 of G1537 him G846 are G2075 ye G5210 in G1722 Christ G5547 Jesus, G2424 who G3739 of G575 God G2316 is made G1096 unto us G2254 G5037 wisdom, G4678 and righteousness, G1343 and G2532 sanctification, G38 and G2532 redemption: G629 That, G2443 according as G2531 it is written, G1125 He that glorieth, G2744 let him glory G2744 in G1722 the Lord. G2962
Likewise, G3668 ye younger, G3501 submit yourselves G5293 unto the elder. G4245 Yea, G1161 all G3956 of you be subject G5293 one to another, G240 and be clothed G1463 with humility: G5012 for G3754 God G2316 resisteth G498 the proud, G5244 and G1161 giveth G1325 grace G5485 to the humble. G5011
Whom hast thou reproached H2778 and blasphemed? H1442 and against whom hast thou exalted H7311 thy voice, H6963 and lifted up H5375 thine eyes H5869 on high? H4791 even against the Holy One H6918 of Israel. H3478
And in that day H3117 there shall be a root H8328 of Jesse, H3448 which shall stand H5975 for an ensign H5251 of the people; H5971 to it shall the Gentiles H1471 seek: H1875 and his rest H4496 shall be glorious. H3519 And it shall come to pass in that day, H3117 that the Lord H136 shall set H3254 his hand H3027 again H3254 the second time H8145 to recover H7069 the remnant H7605 of his people, H5971 which shall be left, H7604 from Assyria, H804 and from Egypt, H4714 and from Pathros, H6624 and from Cush, H3568 and from Elam, H5867 and from Shinar, H8152 and from Hamath, H2574 and from the islands H339 of the sea. H3220
In that day H3117 shall this song H7892 be sung H7891 in the land H776 of Judah; H3063 We have a strong H5797 city; H5892 salvation H3444 will God appoint H7896 for walls H2346 and bulwarks. H2426
In that day H3117 the LORD H3068 with his sore H7186 and great H1419 and strong H2389 sword H2719 shall punish H6485 leviathan H3882 the piercing H1281 serpent, H5175 even leviathan H3882 that crooked H6129 serpent; H5175 and he shall slay H2026 the dragon H8577 that is in the sea. H3220 In that day H3117 sing H6031 ye unto her, A vineyard H3754 of red wine. H2561 H2531
And it shall come to pass in that day, H3117 that the LORD H3068 shall beat off H2251 from the channel H7641 of the river H5104 unto the stream H5158 of Egypt, H4714 and ye shall be gathered H3950 one H259 by one, H259 O ye children H1121 of Israel. H3478 And it shall come to pass in that day, H3117 that the great H1419 trumpet H7782 shall be blown, H8628 and they shall come H935 which were ready to perish H6 in the land H776 of Assyria, H804 and the outcasts H5080 in the land H776 of Egypt, H4714 and shall worship H7812 the LORD H3068 in the holy H6944 mount H2022 at Jerusalem. H3389
In that day H3117 shall the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 be for a crown H5850 of glory, H6643 and for a diadem H6843 of beauty, H8597 unto the residue H7605 of his people, H5971
And in that day H3117 shall the deaf H2795 hear H8085 the words H1697 of the book, H5612 and the eyes H5869 of the blind H5787 shall see H7200 out of obscurity, H652 and out of darkness. H2822
Then shall he give H5414 the rain H4306 of thy seed, H2233 that thou shalt sow H2232 the ground H127 withal; and bread H3899 of the increase H8393 of the earth, H127 and it shall be fat H1879 and plenteous: H8082 in that day H3117 shall thy cattle H4735 feed H7462 in large H7337 pastures. H3733
Deck H5710 thyself now with majesty H1347 and excellency; H1363 and array H3847 thyself with glory H1935 and beauty. H1926 Cast abroad H6327 the rage H5678 of thy wrath: H639 and behold H7200 every one that is proud, H1343 and abase H8213 him. Look H7200 on every one that is proud, H1343 and bring him low; H3665 and tread down H1915 the wicked H7563 in their place.
Therefore my people H5971 shall know H3045 my name: H8034 therefore they shall know in that day H3117 that I am he that doth speak: H1696 behold, it is I.
But let him that glorieth H1984 glory H1984 in this, that he understandeth H7919 and knoweth H3045 me, that I am the LORD H3068 which exercise H6213 lovingkindness, H2617 judgment, H4941 and righteousness, H6666 in the earth: H776 for in these things I delight, H2654 saith H5002 the LORD. H3068
Therefore, son H1121 of man, H120 prophesy H5012 and say H559 unto Gog, H1463 Thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 In that day H3117 when my people H5971 of Israel H3478 dwelleth H3427 safely, H983 shalt thou not know H3045 it?
For in my jealousy H7068 and in the fire H784 of my wrath H5678 have I spoken, H1696 Surely in that day H3117 there shall be a great H1419 shaking H7494 in the land H127 of Israel; H3478
And it shall come to pass in that day, H3117 that I will give H5414 unto Gog H1463 a place H4725 there of graves H6913 in Israel, H3478 the valley H1516 of the passengers H5674 on the east H6926 of the sea: H3220 and it shall stop H2629 the noses of the passengers: H5674 and there shall they bury H6912 Gog H1463 and all his multitude: H1995 and they shall call H7121 it The valley H1516 of Hamongog. H1996
So the house H1004 of Israel H3478 shall know H3045 that I am the LORD H3068 their God H430 from that day H3117 and forward. H1973
And it shall be at that day, H3117 saith H5002 the LORD, H3068 that thou shalt call H7121 me Ishi; H376 and shalt call H7121 me no more Baali. H1180
And in that day H3117 will I make H3772 a covenant H1285 for them with the beasts H2416 of the field, H7704 and with the fowls H5775 of heaven, H8064 and with the creeping things H7431 of the ground: H127 and I will break H7665 the bow H7198 and the sword H2719 and the battle H4421 out of the earth, H776 and will make them to lie down H7901 safely. H983
And it shall come to pass in that day, H3117 I will hear, H6030 saith H5002 the LORD, H3068 I will hear H6030 the heavens, H8064 and they shall hear H6030 the earth; H776
And it shall come to pass in that day, H3117 that the mountains H2022 shall drop down H5197 new wine, H6071 and the hills H1389 shall flow H3212 with milk, H2461 and all the rivers H650 of Judah H3063 shall flow H3212 with waters, H4325 and a fountain H4599 shall come forth H3318 of the house H1004 of the LORD, H3068 and shall water H8248 the valley H5158 of Shittim. Commentary on Isaiah 2 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 2
With this chapter begins a new sermon, which is continued in the two following chapters. The subject of this discourse is Judah and Jerusalem (v. 1). In this chapter the prophet speaks,
And now which of these Jerusalems will we be the inhabitants of-that which is full of the knowledge of God, which will be our everlasting honour, or that which is full of horses and chariots, and silver and gold, and such idols, which will in the end be our shame?
Isa 2:1-5
The particular title of this sermon (v. 1) is the same with the general title of the book (ch. 1:1), only that what is there called the vision is here called the word which Isaiah saw (or the matter, or thing, which he saw), the truth of which he had as full an assurance of in his own mind as if he had seen it with his bodily eyes. Or this word was brought to him in a vision; something he saw when he received this message from God. John turned to see the voice that spoke with him. Rev. 1:12.
This sermon begins with the prophecy relating to the last days, the days of the Messiah, when his kingdom should be set up in the world, at the latter end of the Mosaic economy. In the last days of the earthly Jerusalem, just before the destruction of it, this heavenly Jerusalem should be erected, Heb. 12:22; Gal. 4:26. Note, Gospel times are the last days. For
Now the prophet here foretels,
Isa 2:6-9
The calling in of the Gentiles was accompanied with the rejection of the Jews; it was their fall, and the diminishing of them, that was the riches of the Gentiles; and the casting off of them was the reconciling of the world (Rom. 11:12-15); and it should seem that these verses have reference to that, and are designed to justify God therein, and yet it is probable that they are primarily intended for the convincing and awakening of the men of that generation in which the prophet lived, it being usual with the prophets to speak of the things that then were, both in mercy and judgment, as types of the things that should be hereafter. Here is,
Isa 2:10-22
The prophet here goes on to show what a desolation would be brought upon their land when God should have forsaken them. This may refer particularly to their destruction by the Chaldeans first, and afterwards by the Romans, or it may have a general respect to the method God takes to awaken and humble proud sinners, and to put them out of conceit with that which they delighted in and depended on more than God. We are here told that sooner or later God will find out a way,
