13 But the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 was unto them precept H6673 upon precept, H6673 precept H6673 upon precept; H6673 line H6957 upon line, H6957 line H6957 upon line; H6957 here a little, H2191 and there a little; H2191 that they might go, H3212 and fall H3782 backward, H268 and be broken, H7665 and snared, H3369 and taken. H3920
And G2532 whosoever shall fall G4098 on G1909 this G5126 stone G3037 shall be broken: G4917 but G1161 on G1909 whomsoever G3739 G302 it shall fall, G4098 it will grind G3039 him G846 to powder. G3039
Let their table H7979 become a snare H6341 before H6440 them: and that which should have been for their welfare, H7965 let it become a trap. H4170
And he said, H559 Go, H3212 and tell H559 this people, H5971 Hear H8085 ye indeed, H8085 but understand H995 not; and see H7200 ye indeed, H7200 but perceive H3045 not. Make the heart H3820 of this people H5971 fat, H8080 and make their ears H241 heavy, H3513 and shut H8173 their eyes; H5869 lest they see H7200 with their eyes, H5869 and hear H8085 with their ears, H241 and understand H995 with their heart, H3824 and convert, H7725 and be healed. H7495
And he shall be for a sanctuary; H4720 but for a stone H68 of stumbling H5063 and for a rock H6697 of offence H4383 to both H8147 the houses H1004 of Israel, H3478 for a gin H6341 and for a snare H4170 to the inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem. H3389 And many H7227 among them shall stumble, H3782 and fall, H5307 and be broken, H7665 and be snared, H3369 and be taken. H3920
For precept H6673 must be upon precept, H6673 precept H6673 upon precept; H6673 line H6957 upon line, H6957 line H6957 upon line; H6957 here a little, H2191 and there a little: H2191
And the burden H4853 of the LORD H3068 shall ye mention H2142 no more: for every man's H376 word H1697 shall be his burden; H4853 for ye have perverted H2015 the words H1697 of the living H2416 God, H430 of the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 our God. H430 Thus shalt thou say H559 to the prophet, H5030 What hath the LORD H3068 answered H6030 thee? and, What hath the LORD H3068 spoken? H1696 But H518 since ye say, H559 The burden H4853 of the LORD; H3068 therefore thus saith H559 the LORD; H3068 Because ye say H559 this word, H1697 The burden H4853 of the LORD, H3068 and I have sent H7971 unto you, saying, H559 Ye shall not say, H559 The burden H4853 of the LORD; H3068
Therefore have I hewed H2672 them by the prophets; H5030 I have slain H2026 them by the words H561 of my mouth: H6310 and thy judgments H4941 are as the light H216 that goeth forth. H3318
I have written H3789 to him the great things H7230 H7239 of my law, H8451 but they were counted H2803 as a strange thing. H2114
And G2532 in G1909 them G846 is fulfilled G378 the prophecy G4394 of Esaias, G2268 which G3588 saith, G3004 By hearing G189 ye shall hear, G191 and G2532 shall G4920 not G3364 understand; G4920 and G2532 seeing G991 ye shall see, G991 and G2532 shall G1492 not G3364 perceive: G1492
And G2532 David G1138 saith, G3004 Let G1096 their G846 table G5132 be made G1096 a snare, G1519 G3803 and G2532 a trap, G1519 G2339 and G2532 a stumblingblock, G1519 G4625 and G2532 a recompence G1519 G468 unto them: G846
To G3739 the one G3303 we are the savour G3744 of death G2288 unto G1519 death; G2288 and G1161 to the other G3739 the savour G3744 of life G2222 unto G1519 life. G2222 And G2532 who G5101 is sufficient G2425 for G4314 these things? G5023
Unto you G5213 therefore G3767 which G3588 believe G4100 he is precious: G5092 but G1161 unto them which be disobedient, G544 the stone G3037 which G3739 the builders G3618 disallowed, G593 the same G3778 is made G1096 G1519 the head G2776 of the corner, G1137 And G2532 a stone G3037 of stumbling, G4348 and G2532 a rock G4073 of offence, G4625 even to them which G3739 stumble G4350 at the word, G3056 being disobedient: G544 whereunto G1519 G3739 also G2532 they were appointed. G5087
As G5613 also G2532 in G1722 all G3956 his epistles, G1992 speaking G2980 in G1722 them G846 of G4012 these things; G5130 in G1722 which G3739 are G2076 some things G5100 hard to be understood, G1425 which G3739 they that are unlearned G261 and G2532 unstable G793 wrest, G4761 as G5613 they do also G2532 the other G3062 scriptures, G1124 unto G4314 their G846 own G2398 destruction. Commentary on Isaiah 28 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 28
In this chapter,
This is written for our admonition, and is profitable for reproof and warning to us.
Isa 28:1-8
Here,
Isa 28:9-13
The prophet here complains of the wretched stupidity of this people, that they were unteachable and made no improvement of the means of grace which they possessed; they still continued as they were, their mistakes not rectified, their hearts not renewed, nor their lives reformed. Observe,
Isa 28:14-22
The prophet, having reproved those that made a jest of the word of God, here goes on to reprove those that made a jest of the judgments of God, and set them at defiance; for he is a jealous God, and will not suffer either his ordinances or his providences to be brought into contempt. He addressed himself to the scornful men who ruled in Jerusalem, who were the magistrates of the city, v. 14. It is bad with a people when their thrones of judgment become the seats of the scornful, when rulers are scorners; but that the rulers of Jerusalem should be men of such a character, that they should make light of God's judgments and scorn to take notice of the tokens of his displeasure, is very sad. Who will be mourners in Zion if they are scorners? Observe,
Isa 28:23-29
This parable, which (like many of our Saviour's parables) is borrowed from the husbandman's calling, is ushered in with a solemn preface demanding attention, He that has ears to hear, let him hear, hear and understand, v. 23.
