1 Woe H1945 to the rebellious H5637 children, H1121 saith H5002 the LORD, H3068 that take H6213 counsel, H6098 but not of me; and that cover H5258 with a covering, H4541 but not of my spirit, H7307 that they may add H5595 sin H2403 to sin: H2403
Hear, H8085 O heavens, H8064 and give ear, H238 O earth: H776 for the LORD H3068 hath spoken, H1696 I have nourished H1431 and brought up H7311 children, H1121 and they have rebelled H6586 against me.
That this is a rebellious H4805 people, H5971 lying H3586 children, H1121 children H1121 that will H14 not hear H8085 the law H8451 of the LORD: H3068
So Saul H7586 died H4191 for his transgression H4604 which he committed H4603 against the LORD, H3068 even against the word H1697 of the LORD, H3068 which he kept H8104 not, and also for asking H7592 counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, H178 to enquire H1875 of it; And enquired H1875 not of the LORD: H3068 therefore he slew H4191 him, and turned H5437 the kingdom H4410 unto David H1732 the son H1121 of Jesse. H3448
Ye stiffnecked G4644 and G2532 uncircumcised G564 in heart G2588 and G2532 ears, G3775 ye G5210 do G496 always G104 resist G496 the Holy G40 Ghost: G4151 as G5613 your G5216 fathers G3962 did, so G2532 do ye. G5210 Which G5101 of the prophets G4396 have G1377 not G3756 your G5216 fathers G3962 persecuted? G1377 and G2532 they have slain G615 them which G3588 shewed before G4293 of G4012 the coming G1660 of the Just One; G1342 of whom G3739 ye G5210 have been G1096 now G3568 the betrayers G4273 and G2532 murderers: G5406
Woe H188 unto them! for they have fled H5074 from me: destruction H7701 unto them! because they have transgressed H6586 against me: though I have redeemed H6299 them, yet they have spoken H1696 lies H3577 against me.
For they shall eat, H398 and not have enough: H7646 they shall commit whoredom, H2181 and shall not increase: H6555 because they have left off H5800 to take heed H8104 to the LORD. H3068 Whoredom H2184 and wine H3196 and new wine H8492 take away H3947 the heart. H3820 My people H5971 ask H7592 counsel at their stocks, H6086 and their staff H4731 declareth H5046 unto them: for the spirit H7307 of whoredoms H2183 hath caused them to err, H8582 and they have gone a whoring H2181 from under their God. H430
Son H1121 of man, H120 thou dwellest H3427 in the midst H8432 of a rebellious H4805 house, H1004 which have eyes H5869 to see, H7200 and see H7200 not; they have ears H241 to hear, H8085 and hear H8085 not: for they are a rebellious H4805 house. H1004 Therefore, thou son H1121 of man, H120 prepare H6213 thee stuff H3627 for removing, H1473 and remove H1540 by day H3119 in their sight; H5869 and thou shalt remove H1540 from thy place H4725 to another H312 place H4725 in their sight: H5869 it may be they will consider, H7200 though they be a rebellious H4805 house. H1004
As an adamant H8068 harder H2389 than flint H6864 have I made H5414 thy forehead: H4696 fear H3372 them not, neither be dismayed H2865 at their looks, H6440 though they be a rebellious H4805 house. H1004
But this people H5971 hath a revolting H5637 and a rebellious H4784 heart; H3820 they are revolted H5493 and gone. H3212
I will abide H1481 in thy tabernacle H168 for ever: H5769 I will trust H2620 in the covert H5643 of thy wings. H3671 Selah. H5542
And now they sin H2398 more and more, H3254 and have made H6213 them molten images H4541 of their silver, H3701 and idols H6091 according to their own understanding, H8394 all of it the work H4639 of the craftsmen: H2796 they say H559 of them, Let the men H120 that sacrifice H2076 kiss H5401 the calves. H5695
And I will make thy tongue H3956 cleave H1692 to the roof of thy mouth, H2441 that thou shalt be dumb, H481 and shalt not be to them a reprover: H376 H3198 for they are a rebellious H4805 house. H1004 But when I speak H1696 with H854 thee, I will open H6605 thy mouth, H6310 and thou shalt say H559 unto them, Thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 He that heareth, H8085 let him hear; H8085 and he that forbeareth, H2310 let him forbear: H2308 for they are a rebellious H4805 house. H1004
For the bed H4702 is shorter H7114 than that a man can stretch H8311 himself on it: and the covering H4541 narrower H6887 than that he can wrap H3664 himself in it.
Because ye have said, H559 We have made H3772 a covenant H1285 with death, H4194 and with hell H7585 are we H6213 at agreement; H2374 when the overflowing H7857 scourge H7752 H7885 shall pass through, H5674 H5674 it shall not come H935 unto us: for we have made H7760 lies H3577 our refuge, H4268 and under falsehood H8267 have we hid H5641 ourselves:
Say H559 ye not, A confederacy, H7195 to all them to whom this people H5971 shall say, H559 A confederacy; H7195 neither fear H3372 ye their fear, H4172 nor be afraid. H6206
Woe H1945 unto them that draw H4900 iniquity H5771 with cords H2256 of vanity, H7723 and sin H2403 as it were with a cart H5699 rope: H5688
And the LORD H3068 will create H1254 upon every dwelling place H4349 of mount H2022 Zion, H6726 and upon her assemblies, H4744 a cloud H6051 and smoke H6227 by day, H3119 and the shining H5051 of a flaming H3852 fire H784 by night: H3915 for upon all the glory H3519 shall be a defence. H2646
Why should ye be stricken H5221 any more? ye will revolt H5627 more and more: H3254 the whole head H7218 is sick, H2483 and the whole heart H3824 faint. H1742
He that dwelleth H3427 in the secret H5643 place of the most High H5945 shall abide H3885 under the shadow H6738 of the Almighty. H7706 I will say H559 of the LORD, H3068 He is my refuge H4268 and my fortress: H4686 my God; H430 in him will I trust. H982 Surely he shall deliver H5337 thee from the snare H6341 of the fowler, H3353 and from the noisome H1942 pestilence. H1698 He shall cover H5526 thee with his feathers, H84 and under his wings H3671 shalt thou trust: H2620 his truth H571 shall be thy shield H6793 and buckler. H5507
And it come to pass, when he heareth H8085 the words H1697 of this curse, H423 that he bless H1288 himself in his heart, H3824 saying, H559 I shall have peace, H7965 though H3588 I walk H3212 in the imagination H8307 of mine heart, H3820 to add H5595 drunkenness H7302 to thirst: H6771
Ye have been rebellious H4784 against the LORD H3068 from the day H3117 that I knew H3045 you.
Remember, H2142 and forget H7911 not, how thou provokedst the LORD H3068 thy God H430 to wrath H7107 in the wilderness: H4057 from H4480 the day H3117 that thou didst depart out H3318 of the land H776 of Egypt, H4714 until ye came H935 unto this place, H4725 ye have been rebellious H4784 against H5973 the LORD. Commentary on Isaiah 30 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 30
The prophecy of this chapter seems to relate (as that in the foregoing chapter) to the approaching danger of Jerusalem and desolations of Judah by Sennacherib's invasion. Here is,
Isa 30:1-7
It was often the fault and folly of the people of the Jews that, when they were insulted by their neighbours on one side, they sought for succour from their neighbours on the other side, instead of looking up to God and putting their confidence in him. Against the Israelites they sought to the Syrians, 2 Chr. 16:2, 3. Against the Syrians they sought to the Assyrians, 2 Ki. 16:7. Against the Assyrians they here sought to the Egyptians, and Rabshakeh upbraided them with so doing, 2 Ki. 18:21. Now observe here,
Isa 30:8-17
Here,
Isa 30:18-26
The closing words of the foregoing paragraph (You shall be left as a beacon upon a mountain) some understand as a promise that a remnant of them should be reserved as monuments of mercy; and here the prophet tells them what good times should succeed these calamities. Or the first words in this paragraph may be read by way of antithesis, Notwithstanding this, yet will the Lord wait that he may be gracious. The prophet, having shown that those who made Egypt their confidence would be ashamed of it, here shows that those who sat still and made God alone their confidence would have the comfort of it. It is matter of comfort to the people of God, when the times are very bad, that all will be well yet, well with those that fear God, when we say to the wicked, It shall be ill with you.
Isa 30:27-33
This terrible prediction of the ruin of the Assyrian army, though it is a threatening to them, is part of the promise to the Israel of God, that God would not only punish the Assyrians for the mischief they had done to the Israel of God, but would disable and deter them from doing the like again; and this prediction, which would now shortly be accomplished, would ratify and confirm the foregoing promises, which should be accomplished in the latter days. Here is,
