28 Hast thou not known? H3045 hast thou not heard, H8085 that the everlasting H5769 God, H430 the LORD, H3068 the Creator H1254 of the ends H7098 of the earth, H776 fainteth H3286 not, neither is weary? H3021 there is no searching H2714 of his understanding. H8394
Great H1419 is our Lord, H113 and of great H7227 power: H3581 his understanding H8394 is infinite. H4557
O G5599 the depth G899 of the riches G4149 both G2532 of the wisdom G4678 and G2532 knowledge G1108 of God! G2316 how G5613 unsearchable G419 are his G846 judgments, G2917 and G2532 his G846 ways G3598 past finding out! G421 For G1063 who G5101 hath known G1097 the mind G3563 of the Lord? G2962 or G2228 who G5101 hath been G1096 his G846 counsellor? G4825
But G1161 Jesus G2424 answered G611 them, G846 My G3450 Father G3962 worketh G2038 hitherto, G2193 G737 and I G2504 work. G2038
What? G2228 know ye G1492 not G3756 that G3754 your G5216 body G4983 is G2076 the temple G3485 of the Holy G40 Ghost G4151 which is in G1722 you, G5213 which G3739 ye have G2192 of G575 God, G2316 and G2532 ye are G2075 not G3756 your own? G1438
Know ye G1492 not G3756 that G3754 we shall judge G2919 angels? G32 how much more G3386 G1065 things that pertain to this life? G982 If G1437 then G3303 G3767 ye have G2192 judgments G2922 of things pertaining to this life, G982 set G2523 them G5128 to judge who are least esteemed G1848 in G1722 the church. G1577 I speak G3004 to your G5213 shame. G4314 G1791 Is it so, G3779 that there G2076 is not G3756 a wise man G4680 among G1722 you? G5213 no, not G3761 one G1520 that G3739 shall be able G1410 to judge G1252 between G303 G3319 his G846 brethren? G80
For G1063 who G5101 hath known G1097 the mind G3563 of the Lord, G2962 that G3739 he may instruct G4822 him? G846 But G1161 we G2249 have G2192 the mind G3563 of Christ. G5547
For my people H5971 is foolish, H191 they have not known H3045 me; they are sottish H5530 children, H1121 and they have none understanding: H995 they are wise H2450 to do evil, H7489 but to do good H3190 they have no knowledge. H3045
For my thoughts H4284 are not your thoughts, H4284 neither are your ways H1870 my ways, H1870 saith H5002 the LORD. H3068 For as the heavens H8064 are higher H1361 than the earth, H776 so are my ways H1870 higher H1361 than your ways, H1870 and my thoughts H4284 than your thoughts. H4284
The LORD H3068 will perfect H1584 that which concerneth me: thy mercy, H2617 O LORD, H3068 endureth for ever: H5769 forsake H7503 not the works H4639 of thine own hands. H3027
And Abraham planted H5193 a grove H815 in Beersheba, H884 and called H7121 there on the name H8034 of the LORD, H3068 the everlasting H5769 God. H410
How much G4214 more G3123 shall G2511 the blood G129 of Christ, G5547 who G3739 through G1223 the eternal G166 Spirit G4151 offered G4374 himself G1438 without spot G299 to God, G2316 purge G2511 your G5216 conscience G4893 from G575 dead G3498 works G2041 to G1519 serve G3000 the living G2198 God? G2316
Now G1161 unto the King G935 eternal, G165 immortal, G862 invisible, G517 the only G3441 wise G4680 God, G2316 be honour G5092 and G2532 glory G1391 for G1519 ever G165 and ever. G165 Amen. G281
G2228 Know ye G1492 not G3756 that G3754 the unrighteous G94 shall G2816 not G3756 inherit G2816 the kingdom G932 of God? G2316 Be G4105 not G3361 deceived: G4105 neither G3777 fornicators, G4205 nor G3777 idolaters, G1496 nor G3777 adulterers, G3432 nor G3777 effeminate, G3120 nor G3777 abusers of themselves with mankind, G733
Jesus G2424 saith G3004 unto him, G846 Have I been G1510 so long G5118 time G5550 with G3326 you, G5216 and yet G2532 hast thou G1097 not G3756 known G1097 me, G3165 Philip? G5376 he that hath seen G3708 me G1691 hath seen G3708 the Father; G3962 and G2532 how G4459 sayest G3004 thou G4771 then, Shew G1166 us G2254 the Father? G3962
Afterward G5305 he appeared G5319 unto the eleven G1733 as they G846 sat at meat, G345 and G2532 upbraided G3679 them with their G846 unbelief G570 and G2532 hardness of heart, G4641 because G3754 they believed G4100 not G3756 them which had seen G2300 him G846 after he was risen. G1453
He answereth G611 him, G846 and G1161 saith, G3004 O G5599 faithless G571 generation, G1074 how long G2193 G4219 shall I be G2071 with G4314 you? G5209 how long G2193 G4219 shall I suffer G430 you? G5216 bring G5342 him G846 unto G4314 me. G3165
And G2532 when Jesus G2424 knew G1097 it, he saith G3004 unto them, G846 Why G5101 reason ye, G1260 because G3754 ye have G2192 no G3756 bread? G740 perceive ye G3539 not yet, G3768 neither G3761 understand? G4920 have ye G2192 your G5216 heart G2588 yet G2089 hardened? G4456 Having G2192 eyes, G3788 see ye G991 not? G3756 and G2532 having G2192 ears, G3775 hear ye G191 not? G3756 and G2532 do ye G3421 not G3756 remember? G3421
Behold, H2005 the LORD'S H3068 hand H3027 is not shortened, H7114 that it cannot save; H3467 neither his ear H241 heavy, H3513 that it cannot hear: H8085
For thus saith H559 the high H7311 and lofty One H5375 that inhabiteth H7931 eternity, H5703 whose name H8034 is Holy; H6918 I dwell H7931 in the high H4791 and holy H6918 place, with him also that is of a contrite H1793 and humble H8217 spirit, H7307 to revive H2421 the spirit H7307 of the humble, H8217 and to revive H2421 the heart H3820 of the contrite ones. H1792
Such knowledge H1847 is too wonderful H6383 H6383 for me; it is high, H7682 I cannot H3201 attain unto it.
Before the mountains H2022 were brought forth, H3205 or ever thou hadst formed H2342 the earth H776 and the world, H8398 even from everlasting H5769 to H5704 everlasting, H5769 thou art God. H410
The adversaries H7378 of the LORD H3068 shall be broken to pieces; H2865 out of heaven H8064 shall he thunder H7481 upon them: the LORD H3068 shall judge H1777 the ends H657 of the earth; H776 and he shall give H5414 strength H5797 unto his king, H4428 and exalt H7311 the horn H7161 of his anointed. Commentary on Isaiah 40 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 40
At this chapter begins the latter part of the prophecy of this book, which is not only divided from the former by the historical chapters that come between, but seems to be distinguished from it in the scope and style of it. In the former part the name of the prophet was frequently prefixed to the particular sermons, besides the general title (as 2:1; 7:3; 13:1); but this is all one continued discourse, and the prophet not so much as once named. That consisted of many burdens, many woes; this consists of many blessings. There the distress which the people of God were in by the Assyrian, and their deliverance out of that, were chiefly prophesied of; but that is here spoken of as a thing past (52:4); and the captivity in Babylon, and their deliverance out of that, which were much greater events, of more extensive and abiding concern, are here largely foretold. Before God sent his people into captivity he furnished them with precious promises for their support and comfort in their trouble; and we may well imagine of what great use to them the glorious, gracious, light of this prophecy was, in that cloudy and dark day, and how much it helped to dry up their tears by the rivers of Babylon. But it looks further yet, and to greater things; much of Christ and gospel grace we meet with in the foregoing part of this book, but in this latter part we shall find much more; and, as if it were designed for a prophetic summary of the New Testament, it begins with that which begins the gospels, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness' (40:3), and concludes with that which concludes the book of the Revelation, "The new heavens and the new earth,' (66:22). Even Mr. White acknowledges that, as all the mercies of God to the Jewish nation bore some resemblance to those glorious things performed by our Saviour for man's redemption, so they are by the Spirit of God expressed in such terms as show plainly that while the prophet is speaking of the redemption of the Jews he had in his thoughts a more glorious deliverance. And we need not look for any further accomplishment of these prophecies yet to come; for if Jesus be he, and his kingdom be it, that should come, we are to look for no other, but the carrying on and completing of the same blessed work which was begun in the first preaching and planting of Christianity in the world.
In this chapter we have,
And we, through patience and comfort of this scripture, may have hope.
Isa 40:1-2
We have here the commission and instructions given, not to this prophet only, but, with him, to all the Lord's prophets, nay, and to all Christ's ministers, to proclaim comfort to God's people.
Isa 40:3-8
The time to favour Zion, yea, the set time, having come, the people of God must be prepared, by repentance and faith, for the favours designed them; and, in order to call them to both these, we have here the voice of one crying in the wilderness, which may be applied to those prophets who were with the captives in their wilderness-state, and who, when they saw the day of their deliverance dawn, called earnestly upon them to prepare for it, and assured them that all the difficulties which stood in the way of their deliverance should be got over. It is a good sign that mercy is preparing for us if we find God's grace preparing us for it, Ps. 10:17. But it must be applied to John the Baptist; for, though God was the speaker, he was the voice of one crying in the wilderness, and his business was to prepare the way of the Lord, to dispose men's minds for the reception and entertainment of the gospel of Christ. The way of the Lord is prepared,
Isa 40:9-11
It was promised (v. 5) that the glory of the Lord shall be revealed; that is it with the hopes of which God's people must be comforted. Now here we are told,
Isa 40:12-17
The scope of these verses is to show what a great and glorious being the Lord Jehovah is, who is Israel's God and Saviour. It comes in here,
Isa 40:18-26
The prophet here reproves those,
