19 I will plant H5414 in the wilderness H4057 the cedar, H730 the shittah tree, H7848 and the myrtle, H1918 and the oil H8081 tree; H6086 I will set H7760 in the desert H6160 the fir tree, H1265 and the pine, H8410 and the box tree H8391 together: H3162
Instead of the thorn H5285 shall come up H5927 the fir tree, H1265 and instead of the brier H5636 shall come up H5927 the myrtle tree: H1918 and it shall be to the LORD H3068 for a name, H8034 for an everlasting H5769 sign H226 that shall not be cut off. H3772
And the remnant H7604 that is escaped H6413 of the house H1004 of Judah H3063 shall again H3254 take root H8328 downward, H4295 and bear H6213 fruit H6529 upward: H4605 For out of Jerusalem H3389 shall go forth H3318 a remnant, H7611 and they that escape H6413 out of mount H2022 Zion: H6726 the zeal H7068 of the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 shall do H6213 this.
The wilderness H4057 and the solitary place H6723 shall be glad H7797 for them; and the desert H6160 shall rejoice, H1523 and blossom H6524 as the rose. H2261
Until the spirit H7307 be poured H6168 upon us from on high, H4791 and the wilderness H4057 be a fruitful field, H3759 and the fruitful field H3759 be counted H2803 for a forest. H3293
For the LORD H3068 shall comfort H5162 Zion: H6726 he will comfort H5162 all her waste places; H2723 and he will make H7760 her wilderness H4057 like Eden, H5731 and her desert H6160 like the garden H1588 of the LORD; H3068 joy H8342 and gladness H8057 shall be found H4672 therein, thanksgiving, H8426 and the voice H6963 of melody. H2172
To appoint H7760 unto them that mourn H57 in Zion, H6726 to give H5414 unto them beauty H6287 for ashes, H665 the oil H8081 of joy H8342 for mourning, H60 the garment H4594 of praise H8416 for the spirit H7307 of heaviness; H3544 that they might be called H7121 trees H352 of righteousness, H6664 the planting H4302 of the LORD, H3068 that he might be glorified. H6286
For as the earth H776 bringeth forth H3318 her bud, H6780 and as the garden H1593 causeth the things that are sown H2221 in it to spring forth; H6779 so the Lord H136 GOD H3069 will cause righteousness H6666 and praise H8416 to spring forth H6779 before all the nations. H1471
Thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 I will also take H3947 of the highest branch H6788 of the high H7311 cedar, H730 and will set H5414 it; I will crop off H6998 from the top H7218 of his young twigs H3127 a tender one, H7390 and will plant H8362 it upon an high H1364 mountain H2022 and eminent: H8524 In the mountain H2022 of the height H4791 of Israel H3478 will I plant H8362 it: and it shall bring forth H5375 boughs, H6057 and bear H6213 fruit, H6529 and be a goodly H117 cedar: H730 and under it shall dwell H7931 all fowl H6833 of every wing; H3671 in the shadow H6738 of the branches H1808 thereof shall they dwell. H7931 And all the trees H6086 of the field H7704 shall know H3045 that I the LORD H3068 have brought down H8213 the high H1364 tree, H6086 have exalted H1361 the low H8217 tree, H6086 have dried H3001 up the green H3892 tree, H6086 and have made the dry H3002 tree H6086 to flourish: H6524 I the LORD H3068 have spoken H1696 and have done H6213 it.
And by the river H5158 upon the bank H8193 thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow H5927 all trees H6086 for meat, H3978 whose leaf H5929 shall not fade, H5034 neither shall the fruit H6529 thereof be consumed: H8552 it shall bring forth new fruit H1069 according to his months, H2320 because their waters H4325 they issued out H3318 of the sanctuary: H4720 and the fruit H6529 thereof shall be for meat, H3978 and the leaf H5929 thereof for medicine. Commentary on Isaiah 41 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 41
This chapter, as the former, in intended both for the conviction of idolaters and for the consolation of all God's faithful worshippers; for the Spirit is sent, and ministers are employed by him, both to convince and to comfort. And however this might be primarily intended for the conviction of Babylonians, and the comfort of Israelites, or for the conviction of those in Israel that were addicted to idolatry, as multitudes were, and the comfort of those that kept their integrity, doubtless it was intended both for admonition and encouragement to us, admonition to keep ourselves from idols and encouragement to trust in God. Here,
So that the chapter may be summed up in those words of Elijah, "If Jehovah be God, then follow him; but, if Baal be God, then follow him;' and in the people's acknowledgment, upon the issue of the trial, "Jehovah he is the God, Jehovah he is the God.'
Isa 41:1-9
That particular instance of God's care for his people Israel in raising up Cyrus to be their deliverer is here insisted upon as a great proof both of his sovereignty above all idols and of his power to protect his people. Here is,
Isa 41:10-20
The scope of these verses is to silence the fears, and encourage the faith, of the servants of God in their distresses. Perhaps it is intended, in the first place, for the support of God's Israel, in captivity; but all that faithfully serve God through patience and comfort of this scripture may have hope. And it is addressed to Israel as a single person, that it might the more easily and readily be accommodated and applied by every Israelite indeed to himself. That is a word of caution, counsel, and comfort, which is so often repeated, Fear thou not; and again (v. 13), Fear not; and (v. 14), "Fear not, thou worm Jacob; fear not the threatenings of the enemy, doubt not the promise of thy God; fear not that thou shalt perish in thy affliction or that the promise of thy deliverance shall fail.' It is against the mind of God that his people should be a timorous people. For the suppressing of fear he assures them,
Isa 41:21-29
The Lord, by the prophet, here repeats the challenge to idolaters to make out the pretentions of their idols: "Produce your cause (v. 21) and make your best of it; bring forth the strongest reasons you have to prove that your idols are gods, and worthy of your adoration.' Note, There needs no more to show the absurdity of sin than to produce the reasons that are given in defence of it, for they carry with them their own confutation.
