26 If any man G1536 among G1722 you G5213 seem G1380 to be G1511 religious, G2357 and bridleth G5468 not G3361 his G846 tongue, G1100 but G235 deceiveth G538 his own G846 heart, G2588 this man's G5127 religion G2356 is vain. G3152
Set H7896 a watch, H8108 O LORD, H3068 before my mouth; H6310 keep H5341 the door H1817 of my lips. H8193
For G1063 he that will G2309 love G25 life, G2222 and G2532 see G1492 good G18 days, G2250 let him refrain G3973 his G846 tongue G1100 from G575 evil, G2556 and G2532 his G846 lips G5491 that they speak G2980 no G3361 guile: G1388
Keep H5341 thy tongue H3956 from evil, H7451 and thy lips H8193 from speaking H1696 guile. H4820
For G1063 in many things G4183 we offend G4417 all. G537 If any man G1536 offend G4417 not G3756 in G1722 word, G3056 the same G3778 is a perfect G5046 man, G435 and able G1415 also G2532 to bridle G5468 the whole G3650 body. G4983 Behold, G2400 we put G906 bits G5469 in G1519 the horses' G2462 mouths, G4750 that G4314 they G846 may obey G3982 us; G2254 and G2532 we turn about G3329 their G846 whole G3650 body. G4983 Behold G2400 also G2532 the ships, G4143 which though they be G5607 so great, G5082 and G2532 are driven G1643 of G5259 fierce G4642 winds, G417 yet are they turned about G3329 with G5259 a very small G1646 helm, G4079 whithersoever G3699 G302 the governor G2116 listeth. G3730 G1014 Even G2532 so G3779 the tongue G1100 is G2076 a little G3398 member, G3196 and G2532 boasteth great things. G3166 Behold, G2400 how great G2245 a matter G5208 a little G3641 fire G4442 kindleth! G381 And G2532 the tongue G1100 is a fire, G4442 a world G2889 of iniquity: G93 so G3779 is G2525 the tongue G1100 among G1722 our G2257 members, G3196 that it defileth G4695 the whole G3650 body, G4983 and G2532 setteth on fire G5394 the course G5164 of nature; G1078 and G2532 it is set on fire G5394 of G5259 hell. G1067
Better H2896 is the poor H7326 that walketh H1980 in his integrity, H8537 than he that is perverse H6141 in his lips, H8193 and is a fool. H3684
The mouth H6310 of the just H6662 bringeth forth H5107 wisdom: H2451 but the froward H8419 tongue H3956 shall be cut out. H3772
Take heed G991 therefore G3767 how G4459 ye hear: G191 for G1063 whosoever G3739 G302 hath, G2192 to him G846 shall be given; G1325 and G2532 whosoever G3739 G302 hath G2192 not, G3361 from G575 him G846 shall be taken G142 even G2532 that which G3739 he seemeth G1380 to have. G2192
Neither G2532 filthiness, G151 nor G2532 foolish talking, G3473 nor G2228 jesting, G2160 which G3588 are G433 not G3756 convenient: G433 but G235 rather G3123 giving of thanks. G2169
For G1063 if a man G1536 think himself G1380 to be G1511 something, G5100 when he is G5607 nothing, G3367 he deceiveth G5422 himself. G1438
The tongue H3956 of the wise H2450 useth knowledge H1847 aright: H3190 but the mouth H6310 of fools H3684 poureth out H5042 foolishness. H200
A man H376 shall eat H398 good H2896 by the fruit H6529 of his mouth: H6310 but the soul H5315 of the transgressors H898 shall eat violence. H2555 He that keepeth H5341 his mouth H6310 keepeth H8104 his life: H5315 but he that openeth wide H6589 his lips H8193 shall have destruction. H4288
In the multitude H7230 of words H1697 there wanteth H2308 not sin: H6588 but he that refraineth H2820 his lips H8193 is wise. H7919
[[To the chief Musician, H5329 even to Jeduthun, H3038 A Psalm H4210 of David.]] H1732 I said, H559 I will take heed H8104 to my ways, H1870 that I sin H2398 not with my tongue: H3956 I will keep H8104 my mouth H6310 with a bridle, H4269 while the wicked H7563 is before me. I was dumb H481 with silence, H1747 I held my peace, H2814 even from good; H2896 and my sorrow H3511 was stirred. H5916
But G1161 wilt G2309 thou know, G1097 O G5599 vain G2756 man, G444 that G3754 faith G4102 without G5565 works G2041 is G2076 dead? G3498
But G1161 of G575 these who seemed G1380 to be G1511 somewhat, G5100 (whatsoever G3697 G4218 they were, G2258 it maketh G1308 no G3762 matter G1308 to me: G3427 God G2316 accepteth G2983 no G3756 man's G444 person:) G4383 for G1063 they who seemed G1380 to be somewhat in conference added G4323 nothing G3762 to me: G1698
Yea, G1161 and G2532 we are found G2147 false witnesses G5575 of God; G2316 because G3754 we have testified G3140 of G2596 God G2316 that G3754 he raised up G1453 Christ: G5547 whom G3739 he raised G1453 not G3756 up, G1453 if G1512 so be G686 that the dead G3498 rise G1453 not. G3756
By G1223 which G3739 also G2532 ye are saved, G4982 if G1487 ye keep G2722 in memory what G5101 G3056 I preached G2097 unto you, G5213 unless G1622 G1508 ye have believed G4100 in vain. G1500
Ye have said, H559 It is vain H7723 to serve H5647 God: H430 and what profit H1215 is it that we have kept H8104 his ordinance, H4931 and that we have walked H1980 mournfully H6941 before H6440 the LORD H3068 of hosts? H6635
He feedeth H7462 on ashes: H665 a deceived H2048 heart H3820 hath turned him aside, H5186 that he cannot deliver H5337 his soul, H5315 nor say, H559 Is there not a lie H8267 in my right hand? H3225
He coveteth H183 greedily H8378 all the day H3117 long: but the righteous H6662 giveth H5414 and spareth H2820 not.
There is H3426 a way H1870 which seemeth right H3477 unto H6440 a man, H376 but the end H319 thereof are the ways H1870 of death. H4194
And G2532 when James, G2385 G2532 Cephas, G2786 and G2532 John, G2491 who G3588 seemed G1380 to be G1511 pillars, G4769 perceived G1097 the grace G5485 that was given G1325 unto me, G3427 they gave G1325 to me G1698 and G2532 Barnabas G921 the right hands G1188 of fellowship; G2842 that G2443 we G2249 should go unto G1519 the heathen, G1484 and G1161 they G846 unto G1519 the circumcision. Commentary on James 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
An Exposition, With Practical Observations, of
The General Epistle of James
Chapter 1
After the inscription and salutation (v. 1) Christians are taught how to conduct themselves when under the cross. Several graces and duties are recommended; and those who endure their trials and afflictions as the apostle here directs are pronounced blessed and are assured of a glorious reward (v. 2-12). But those sins which bring sufferings, or the weakness and faults men are chargeable with under them, are by no means to be imputed to God, who cannot be the author of sin, but is the author of all good (v. 13-18). All passion, and rash anger, and vile affections, ought to be suppressed. The word of God should be made our chief study: and what we hear and know of it we must take care to practise, otherwise our religion will prove but a vain thing. To this is added an account wherein pure religion consists (v. 19-27).
