17 For the LORD H3068 of hosts, H6635 that planted H5193 thee, hath pronounced H1696 evil H7451 against thee, for H1558 the evil H7451 of the house H1004 of Israel H3478 and of the house H1004 of Judah, H3063 which they have done H6213 against themselves to provoke me to anger H3707 in offering incense H6999 unto Baal. H1168
And he fenced H5823 it, and gathered out the stones H5619 thereof, and planted H5193 it with the choicest vine, H8321 and built H1129 a tower H4026 in the midst H8432 of it, and also made H2672 a winepress H3342 therein: and he looked H6960 that it should bring forth H6213 grapes, H6025 and it brought forth H6213 wild grapes. H891
Thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts, H6635 the God H430 of Israel; H3478 Behold, I will bring H935 upon this city H5892 and upon all her towns H5892 all the evil H7451 that I have pronounced H1696 against it, because they have hardened H7185 their necks, H6203 that they might not hear H8085 my words. H1697
Did Hezekiah H2396 king H4428 of Judah H3063 and all Judah H3063 put him at all H4191 to death? H4191 did he not fear H3373 the LORD, H3068 and besought H2470 the LORD, H3068 H6440 and the LORD H3068 repented H5162 him of the evil H7451 which he had pronounced H1696 against them? Thus H587 might we procure H6213 great H1419 evil H7451 against our souls. H5315
Thus shalt thou say H559 unto him, The LORD H3068 saith H559 thus; Behold, that which I have built H1129 will I break down, H2040 and that which I have planted H5193 I will pluck up, H5428 even this whole land. H776
It may be they will present H5307 their supplication H8467 before H6440 the LORD, H3068 and will return H7725 every one H376 from his evil H7451 way: H1870 for great H1419 is the anger H639 and the fury H2534 that the LORD H3068 hath pronounced H1696 against this people. H5971
Therefore thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 God H430 of hosts, H6635 the God H430 of Israel; H3478 Behold, I will bring H935 upon Judah H3063 and upon all the inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem H3389 all the evil H7451 that I have pronounced H1696 against them: because I have spoken H1696 unto them, but they have not heard; H8085 and I have called H7121 unto them, but they have not answered. H6030
Moreover I will appoint H7760 a place H4725 for my people H5971 Israel, H3478 and will plant H5193 them, that they may dwell H7931 in a place of their own, and move H7264 no more; neither shall the children H1121 of wickedness H5766 afflict H6031 them any more, H3254 as beforetime, H7223
Therefore now amend H3190 your ways H1870 and your doings, H4611 and obey H8085 the voice H6963 of the LORD H3068 your God; H430 and the LORD H3068 will repent H5162 him of the evil H7451 that he hath pronounced H1696 against you.
And it shall come to pass, when thou shalt shew H5046 this people H5971 all these words, H1697 and they shall say H559 unto thee, Wherefore hath the LORD H3068 pronounced H1696 all this great H1419 evil H7451 against us? or what is our iniquity? H5771 or what is our sin H2403 that we have committed H2398 against the LORD H3068 our God? H430 Then shalt thou say H559 unto them, Because your fathers H1 have forsaken H5800 me, saith H5002 the LORD, H3068 and have walked H3212 after H310 other H312 gods, H430 and have served H5647 them, and have worshipped H7812 them, and have forsaken H5800 me, and have not kept H8104 my law; H8451
To appoint H7760 unto them that mourn H57 in Zion, H6726 to give H5414 unto them beauty H6287 for ashes, H665 the oil H8081 of joy H8342 for mourning, H60 the garment H4594 of praise H8416 for the spirit H7307 of heaviness; H3544 that they might be called H7121 trees H352 of righteousness, H6664 the planting H4302 of the LORD, H3068 that he might be glorified. Commentary on Jeremiah 11 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 11
In this chapter,
Jer 11:1-10
The prophet here, as prosecutor in God's name, draws up an indictment against the Jews for wilful disobedience to the commands of their rightful Sovereign. For the more solemn management of this charge,
Jer 11:11-17
This paragraph, which contains so much of God's wrath, might very well be expected to follow upon that which goes next before, which contained so much of his people's sin. When God found so much evil among them we cannot think it strange if it follows, Therefore I will bring evil upon them (v. 11), the evil of punishment for the evil of sin; and there is no remedy, no relief: the decree has gone forth and the sentence will be executed.
Jer 11:18-23
The prophet Jeremiah has much in his writings concerning himself, much more than Isaiah had, the times he lived in being very troublesome. Here we have (as it should seem) the beginning of his sorrows, which arose from the people of his own city, Anathoth, a priest's city, and yet a malignant one. Observe here,
