3 But thou, O LORD, H3068 knowest H3045 me: thou hast seen H7200 me, and tried H974 mine heart H3820 toward thee: pull them out H5423 like sheep H6629 for the slaughter, H2878 and prepare H6942 them for the day H3117 of slaughter. H2028
Let them be confounded H954 that persecute H7291 me, but let not me be confounded: H954 let them be dismayed, H2865 but let not me be dismayed: H2865 bring H935 upon them the day H3117 of evil, H7451 and destroy H7665 them with double H4932 destruction. H7670
Thou hast proved H974 mine heart; H3820 thou hast visited H6485 me in the night; H3915 thou hast tried H6884 me, and shalt find H4672 nothing; I am purposed H2161 that my mouth H6310 shall not transgress. H5674
Search H2713 me, O God, H410 and know H3045 my heart: H3824 try H974 me, and know H3045 my thoughts: H8312
[[To the chief Musician, H5329 A Psalm H4210 of David.]] H1732 O LORD, H3068 thou hast searched H2713 me, and known H3045 me. Thou knowest H3045 my downsitting H3427 and mine uprising, H6965 thou understandest H995 my thought H7454 afar off. H7350 Thou compassest H2219 my path H734 and my lying down, H7252 and art acquainted H5532 with all my ways. H1870 For there is not a word H4405 in my tongue, H3956 but, lo, O LORD, H3068 thou knowest H3045 it altogether.
[[A Psalm of David.]] H1732 Judge H8199 me, O LORD; H3068 for I have walked H1980 in mine integrity: H8537 I have trusted H982 also in the LORD; H3068 therefore I shall not slide. H4571
I know H3045 also, my God, H430 that thou triest H974 the heart, H3824 and hast pleasure H7521 in uprightness. H3476 As for me, in the uprightness H4339 of mine heart H3824 I have willingly offered H5068 all these things: and now have I seen H7200 with joy H8057 thy people, H5971 which are present H4672 here, to offer willingly H5068 unto thee.
For G3754 if G1437 our G2257 heart G2588 condemn us, G2607 G3754 God G2316 is G2076 greater G3187 than our G2257 heart, G2588 and G2532 knoweth G1097 all things. G3956 Beloved, G27 if G3362 our G2257 heart G2588 condemn G2607 us G2257 not, G3362 then have we G2192 confidence G3954 toward G4314 God. G2316
He saith G3004 unto him G846 the third G5154 time, Simon, G4613 son of Jonas, G2495 lovest G5368 thou me? G3165 Peter G4074 was grieved G3076 because G3754 he said G2036 unto him G846 the third G5154 time, Lovest G5368 thou me? G3165 And G2532 he said G2036 unto him, G846 Lord, G2962 thou G4771 knowest G1492 all things; G3956 thou G4771 knowest G1097 that G3754 I love G5368 thee. G4571 Jesus G2424 saith G3004 unto him, G846 Feed G1006 my G3450 sheep. G4263
But, O LORD H3068 of hosts, H6635 that triest H974 the righteous, H6662 and seest H7200 the reins H3629 and the heart, H3820 let me see H7200 thy vengeance H5360 on them: for unto thee have I opened H1540 my cause. H7379
Therefore deliver up H5414 their children H1121 to the famine, H7458 and pour out H5064 their blood by the force H3027 of the sword; H2719 and let their wives H802 be bereaved H7909 of their children, and be widows; H490 and let their men H582 be put H2026 to death; H4194 let their young men H970 be slain H5221 by the sword H2719 in battle. H4421 Let a cry H2201 be heard H8085 from their houses, H1004 when thou shalt bring H935 a troop H1416 suddenly H6597 upon them: for they have digged H3738 a pit H7745 H7882 to take H3920 me, and hid H2934 snares H6341 for my feet. H7272 Yet, LORD, H3068 thou knowest H3045 all their counsel H6098 against me to slay H4194 me: forgive H3722 not their iniquity, H5771 neither blot out H4229 their sin H2403 from thy sight, H6440 but let them be overthrown H3782 before H6440 thee; deal H6213 thus with them in the time H6256 of thine anger. H639
But I was like a lamb H3532 or an ox H441 that is brought H2986 to the slaughter; H2873 and I knew H3045 not that they had devised H2803 devices H4284 against me, saying, Let us destroy H7843 the tree H6086 with the fruit H3899 thereof, and let us cut him off H3772 from the land H776 of the living, H2416 that his name H8034 may be no more remembered. H2142 But, O LORD H3068 of hosts, H6635 that judgest H8199 righteously, H6664 that triest H974 the reins H3629 and the heart, H3820 let me see H7200 thy vengeance H5360 on them: for unto thee have I revealed H1540 my cause. Commentary on Jeremiah 12 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 12
In this chapter we have,
Jer 12:1-6
The prophet doubts not but it would be of use to others to know what had passed between God and his soul, what temptations he had been assaulted with and how he had got over them; and therefore he here tells us,
Jer 12:7-13
The people of the Jews are here marked for ruin.
Jer 12:14-17
The prophets sometimes, in God's name, delivered messages both of judgment and mercy to the nations that bordered on the land of Israel: but here is a message to all those in general who had in their turns been one way or other injurious to God's people, had either oppressed them or triumphed in their being oppressed. Observe,
