26 How long shall this be H3426 in the heart H3820 of the prophets H5030 that prophesy H5012 lies? H8267 yea, they are prophets H5030 of the deceit H8649 of their own heart; H3820
Now G1161 the Spirit G4151 speaketh G3004 expressly, G4490 that G3754 in G1722 the latter G5306 times G2540 some G5100 shall depart from G868 the faith, G4102 giving heed G4337 to seducing G4108 spirits, G4151 and G2532 doctrines G1319 of devils; G1140 Speaking lies G5573 in G1722 hypocrisy; G5272 having G2743 their G2398 conscience G4893 seared with a hot iron; G2743
O Jerusalem, H3389 wash H3526 thine heart H3820 from wickedness, H7451 that thou mayest be saved. H3467 How long shall thy vain H205 thoughts H4284 lodge H3885 within H7130 thee?
I have seen H7200 thine adulteries, H5004 and thy neighings, H4684 the lewdness H2154 of thy whoredom, H2184 and thine abominations H8251 on the hills H1389 in the fields. H7704 Woe H188 unto thee, O Jerusalem! H3389 wilt thou not be made clean? H2891 when shall it once H5750 H310 be?
Then the LORD H3068 said H559 unto me, The prophets H5030 prophesy H5012 lies H8267 in my name: H8034 I sent H7971 them not, neither have I commanded H6680 them, neither spake H1696 unto them: they prophesy H5012 unto you a false H8267 vision H2377 and divination, H7081 and a thing of nought, H457 H434 and the deceit H8649 of their heart. H3820
The heart H3820 is deceitful H6121 above all things, and desperately wicked: H605 who can know H3045 it?
Thy calf, H5695 O Samaria, H8111 hath cast H2186 thee off; mine anger H639 is kindled H2734 against them: how long will it be ere H3808 they attain H3201 to innocency? H5356
And said, G2036 O G5599 full G4134 of all G3956 subtilty G1388 and G2532 all G3956 mischief, G4468 thou child G5207 of the devil, G1228 thou enemy G2190 of all G3956 righteousness, G1343 wilt thou G3973 not G3756 cease G3973 to pervert G1294 the right G2117 ways G3598 of the Lord? G2962
Even him, whose G3739 coming G3952 is G2076 after G2596 the working G1753 of Satan G4567 with G1722 all G3956 power G1411 and G2532 signs G4592 and G2532 lying G5579 wonders, G5059 And G2532 with G1722 all G3956 deceivableness G539 of unrighteousness G93 in G1722 them that perish; G622 because G473 G3739 they received G1209 not G3756 the love G26 of the truth, G225 that G1519 they G846 might be saved. G4982 And G2532 for this G5124 cause G1223 God G2316 shall send G3992 them G846 strong G1753 delusion, G4106 that G1519 they G846 should believe G4100 a lie: G5579
For G1063 the time G2540 will come G2071 when G3753 they will G430 not G3756 endure G430 sound G5198 doctrine; G1319 but G235 after G2596 their own G2398 lusts G1939 shall they heap G2002 to themselves G1438 teachers, G1320 having itching G2833 ears; G189
And shall receive G2865 the reward G3408 of unrighteousness, G93 as they that count G2233 it pleasure G2237 to riot G5172 in G1722 the day time. G2250 Spots G4696 they are and G2532 blemishes, G3470 sporting themselves G1792 with G1722 their own G846 deceivings G539 while they feast G4910 with you; G5213 Having G2192 eyes G3788 full G3324 of adultery, G3428 and G2532 that cannot cease from G180 sin; G266 beguiling G1185 unstable G793 souls: G5590 an heart G2588 they have G2192 exercised G1128 with covetous practices; G4124 cursed G2671 children: G5043 Which have forsaken G2641 the right G2117 way, G3598 and are gone astray, G4105 following G1811 the way G3598 of Balaam G903 the son of Bosor, G1007 who G3739 loved G25 the wages G3408 of unrighteousness; G93 But G1161 was G2192 rebuked G1649 for his G2398 iniquity: G3892 the dumb G880 ass G5268 speaking G5350 with G1722 man's G444 voice G5456 forbad G2967 the madness G3913 of the prophet. Commentary on Jeremiah 23 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 23
In this chapter the prophet, in God's name, is dealing his reproofs and threatenings,
When all have thus corrupted their way they must all expect to be told faithfully of it.
Jer 23:1-8
Jer 23:9-32
Here is a long lesson for the false prophets. As none were more bitter and spiteful against God's true prophets than they, so there were none on whom the true prophets were more severe, and justly. Jer 23:33-40
The profaneness of the people, with that of the priests and prophets, is here reproved in a particular instance, which may seem of small moment in comparison of their greater crimes; but profaneness in common discourse, and the debauching of the language of a nation, being a notorious evidence of the prevalency of wickedness in it, we are not to think it strange that this matter was so largely and warmly insisted upon here.
