17 Let the priests, H3548 the ministers H8334 of the LORD, H3068 weep H1058 between the porch H197 and the altar, H4196 and let them say, H559 Spare H2347 thy people, H5971 O LORD, H3068 and give H5414 not thine heritage H5159 to reproach, H2781 that the heathen H1471 should rule over H4910 them: wherefore should they say H559 among the people, H5971 Where is their God? H430
And he brought H935 me into the inner H6442 court H2691 of the LORD'S H3068 house, H1004 and, behold, at the door H6607 of the temple H1964 of the LORD, H3068 between the porch H197 and the altar, H4196 were about five H2568 and twenty H6242 men, H376 with their backs H268 toward the temple H1964 of the LORD, H3068 and their faces H6440 toward the east; H6924 and they worshipped H7812 the sun H8121 toward the east. H6924
Wherefore should the heathen H1471 say, H559 Where is now their God? H430
Now therefore, O LORD H3068 our God, H430 save H3467 us from his hand, H3027 that all the kingdoms H4467 of the earth H776 may know H3045 that thou art the LORD, H3068 even thou only.
As with a sword H7524 in my bones, H6106 mine enemies H6887 reproach H2778 me; while they say H559 daily H3117 unto me, Where is thy God? H430
And it came to pass, that when they had made an end H3615 of eating H398 the grass H6212 of the land, H776 then I said, H559 O Lord H136 GOD, H3069 forgive, H5545 I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob H3290 arise? H6965 for he is small. H6996
Then said H559 I, O Lord H136 GOD, H3069 cease, H2308 I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob H3290 arise? H6965 for he is small. H6996
That G3704 upon G1909 you G5209 may come G2064 all G3956 the righteous G1342 blood G129 shed G1632 upon G1909 the earth, G1093 from G575 the blood G129 of righteous G1342 Abel G6 unto G2193 the blood G129 of Zacharias G2197 son G5207 of Barachias, G914 whom G3739 ye slew G5407 between G3342 the temple G3485 and G2532 the altar. G2379
Therefore, ye mountains H2022 of Israel, H3478 hear H8085 the word H1697 of the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 Thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD H3069 to the mountains, H2022 and to the hills, H1389 to the rivers, H650 and to the valleys, H1516 to the desolate H8074 wastes, H2723 and to the cities H5892 that are forsaken, H5800 which became a prey H957 and derision H3933 to the residue H7611 of the heathen H1471 that are round about; H5439 Therefore thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 Surely in the fire H784 of my jealousy H7068 have I spoken H1696 against the residue H7611 of the heathen, H1471 and against all Idumea, H123 which have appointed H5414 my land H776 into their possession H4181 with the joy H8057 of all their heart, H3824 with despiteful H7589 minds, H5315 to cast it out H4054 for a prey. H957 Prophesy H5012 therefore concerning the land H127 of Israel, H3478 and say H559 unto the mountains, H2022 and to the hills, H1389 to the rivers, H650 and to the valleys, H1516 Thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 Behold, I have spoken H1696 in my jealousy H7068 and in my fury, H2534 because ye have borne H5375 the shame H3639 of the heathen: H1471 Therefore thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 I have lifted up H5375 mine hand, H3027 Surely the heathen H1471 that are about H5439 you, they shall bear H5375 their shame. H3639
And now, I pray you, beseech H2470 H6440 God H410 that he will be gracious H2603 unto us: this hath been by your means: H3027 will he regard H5375 your persons? H6440 saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts. H6635
Gird H2296 yourselves, and lament, H5594 ye priests: H3548 howl, H3213 ye ministers H8334 of the altar: H4196 come, H935 lie all night H3885 in sackcloth, H8242 ye ministers H8334 of my God: H430 for the meat offering H4503 and the drink offering H5262 is withholden H4513 from the house H1004 of your God. H430
O my God, H430 incline H5186 thine ear, H241 and hear; H8085 open H6491 thine eyes, H5869 and behold H7200 our desolations, H8074 and the city H5892 which is called H7121 by thy name: H8034 for we do not present H5307 our supplications H8469 before H6440 thee for our righteousnesses, H6666 but for thy great H7227 mercies. H7356 O Lord, H136 hear; H8085 O Lord, H136 forgive; H5545 O Lord, H136 hearken H7181 and do; H6213 defer H309 not, H408 for thine own sake, O my God: H430 for thy city H5892 and thy people H5971 are called H7121 by thy name. H8034
My tears H1832 have been my meat H3899 day H3119 and night, H3915 while they continually H3117 say H559 unto me, Where is thy God? H430
And he said, H559 If now I have found H4672 grace H2580 in thy sight, H5869 O Lord, H136 let my Lord, H136 I pray thee, go H3212 among H7130 us; for it is a stiffnecked H7186 H6203 people; H5971 and pardon H5545 our iniquity H5771 and our sin, H2403 and take us for thine inheritance. H5157
And they will tell H559 it to the inhabitants H3427 of this land: H776 for they have heard H8085 that thou LORD H3068 art among H7130 this people, H5971 that thou LORD H3068 art seen H7200 face H5869 to face, H5869 and that thy cloud H6051 standeth H5975 over them, and that thou goest H1980 before H6440 them, by day time H3119 in a pillar H5982 of a cloud, H6051 and in a pillar H5982 of fire H784 by night. H3915 Now if thou shalt kill H4191 all this people H5971 as one H259 man, H376 then the nations H1471 which have heard H8085 the fame H8088 of thee will speak, H559 saying, H559 Because the LORD H3068 was not H1115 able H3201 to bring H935 this people H5971 into the land H776 which he sware H7650 unto them, therefore he hath slain H7819 them in the wilderness. H4057
And I looked, H7200 and, behold, ye had sinned H2398 against the LORD H3068 your God, H430 and had made H6213 you a molten H4541 calf: H5695 ye had turned aside H5493 quickly H4118 out of the way H1870 which the LORD H3068 had commanded H6680 you. And I took H8610 the two H8147 tables, H3871 and cast H7993 them out of H5921 my two H8147 hands, H3027 and brake H7665 them before your eyes. H5869 And I fell down H5307 before H6440 the LORD, H3068 as at the first, H7223 forty H705 days H3117 and forty H705 nights: H3915 I did neither eat H398 bread, H3899 nor drink H8354 water, H4325 because of all your sins H2403 which ye sinned, H2398 in doing H6213 wickedly H7451 in the sight H5869 of the LORD, H3068 to provoke him to anger. H3707 For I was afraid H3025 of H6440 the anger H639 and hot displeasure, H2534 wherewith the LORD H3068 was wroth H7107 against you to destroy H8045 you. But the LORD H3068 hearkened H8085 unto me at that time H6471 also. And the LORD H3068 was very H3966 angry H599 with Aaron H175 to have destroyed H8045 him: and I prayed H6419 for Aaron H175 also the same time. H6256 And I took H3947 your sin, H2403 the calf H5695 which ye had made, H6213 and burnt H8313 it with fire, H784 and stamped H3807 it, and ground H2912 it very small, H3190 even until it was as small H1854 as dust: H6083 and I cast H7993 the dust H6083 thereof into the brook H5158 that descended out H3381 of the mount. H2022 And at Taberah, H8404 and at Massah, H4532 and at Kibrothhattaavah, H6914 ye provoked the LORD H3068 to wrath. H7107 Likewise when the LORD H3068 sent H7971 you from Kadeshbarnea, H6947 saying, H559 Go up H5927 and possess H3423 the land H776 which I have given H5414 you; then ye rebelled H4784 against the commandment H6310 of the LORD H3068 your God, H430 and ye believed H539 him not, nor hearkened H8085 to his voice. H6963 Ye have been rebellious H4784 against the LORD H3068 from the day H3117 that I knew H3045 you. Thus I fell down H5307 before H6440 the LORD H3068 forty H705 days H3117 and forty H705 nights, H3915 as I fell down H5307 at the first; because the LORD H3068 had said H559 he would destroy H8045 you. I prayed H6419 therefore unto the LORD, H3068 and said, H559 O Lord H136 GOD, H3069 destroy H7843 not thy people H5971 and thine inheritance, H5159 which thou hast redeemed H6299 through thy greatness, H1433 which thou hast brought forth H3318 out of Egypt H4714 with a mighty H2389 hand. H3027 Remember H2142 thy servants, H5650 Abraham, H85 Isaac, H3327 and Jacob; H3290 look H6437 not unto the stubbornness H7190 of this people, H5971 nor to their wickedness, H7562 nor to their sin: H2403 Lest the land H776 whence thou broughtest us out H3318 say, H559 Because the LORD H3068 was not able H3201 to bring H935 them into the land H776 which he promised H1696 them, and because he hated H8135 them, he hath brought them out H3318 to slay H4191 them in the wilderness. H4057 Yet they are thy people H5971 and thine inheritance, H5159 which thou broughtest out H3318 by thy mighty H1419 power H3581 and by thy stretched out H5186 arm. H2220
Were it not H3884 that I feared H1481 the wrath H3708 of the enemy, H341 lest their adversaries H6862 should behave themselves strangely, H5234 and lest they should say, H559 Our hand H3027 is high, H7311 and the LORD H3068 hath not done H6466 all this.
Then will I cut off H3772 Israel H3478 out H6440 of the land H127 which I have given H5414 them; and this house, H1004 which I have hallowed H6942 for my name, H8034 will I cast out H7971 of my sight; H6440 and Israel H3478 shall be a proverb H4912 and a byword H8148 among all people: H5971
Then will I pluck them up by the roots H5428 out of my land H127 which I have given H5414 them; and this house, H1004 which I have sanctified H6942 for my name, H8034 will I cast out H7993 of my sight, H6440 and will make H5414 it to be a proverb H4912 and a byword H8148 among all nations. H5971
Behold, we are servants H5650 this day, H3117 and for the land H776 that thou gavest H5414 unto our fathers H1 to eat H398 the fruit H6529 thereof and the good H2898 thereof, behold, we are servants H5650 in it:
And Moses H4872 besought H2470 H6440 the LORD H3068 his God, H430 and said, H559 LORD, H3068 why doth thy wrath H639 wax hot H2734 against thy people, H5971 which thou hast brought forth H3318 out of the land H776 of Egypt H4714 with great H1419 power, H3581 and with a mighty H2389 hand? H3027 Wherefore should the Egyptians H4714 speak, H559 and say, H559 For mischief H7451 did he bring H3318 them out, to slay H2026 them in the mountains, H2022 and to consume H3615 them from the face H6440 of the earth? H127 Turn H7725 from thy fierce H2740 wrath, H639 and repent H5162 of this evil H7451 against thy people. H5971 Remember H2142 Abraham, H85 Isaac, H3327 and Israel, H3478 thy servants, H5650 to whom thou swarest H7650 by thine own self, and saidst H1696 unto them, I will multiply H7235 your seed H2233 as the stars H3556 of heaven, H8064 and all this land H776 that I have spoken H559 of will I give H5414 unto your seed, H2233 and they shall inherit H5157 it for ever. H5769
Thou makest us to turn H7725 back H268 from the enemy: H6862 and they which hate H8130 us spoil H8154 for themselves. Thou hast given H5414 us like sheep H6629 appointed for meat; H3978 and hast scattered H2219 us among the heathen. H1471 Thou sellest H4376 thy people H5971 for nought, H1952 and dost not increase H7235 thy wealth by their price. H4242 Thou makest H7760 us a reproach H2781 to our neighbours, H7934 a scorn H3933 and a derision H7047 to them that are round about H5439 us. Thou makest H7760 us a byword H4912 among the heathen, H1471 a shaking H4493 of the head H7218 among the people. H3816
Remember H2142 this, that the enemy H341 hath reproached, H2778 O LORD, H3068 and that the foolish H5036 people H5971 have blasphemed H5006 thy name. H8034 O deliver H5414 not the soul H5315 of thy turtledove H8449 unto the multitude H2416 of the wicked: forget H7911 not the congregation H2416 of thy poor H6041 for ever. H5331 Have respect H5027 unto the covenant: H1285 for the dark H4285 places of the earth H776 are full H4390 of the habitations H4999 of cruelty. H2555 O let not the oppressed H1790 return H7725 ashamed: H3637 let the poor H6041 and needy H34 praise H1984 thy name. H8034 Arise, H6965 O God, H430 plead H7378 thine own cause: H7379 remember H2142 how the foolish man H5036 reproacheth H2781 thee daily. H3117 Forget H7911 not the voice H6963 of thine enemies: H6887 the tumult H7588 of those that rise up H6965 against thee increaseth H5927 continually. H8548
Wherewith thine enemies H341 have reproached, H2778 O LORD; H3068 wherewith they have reproached H2778 the footsteps H6119 of thine anointed. H4899
O LORD, H3068 why hast thou made us to err H8582 from thy ways, H1870 and hardened H7188 our heart H3820 from thy fear? H3374 Return H7725 for thy servants' H5650 sake, the tribes H7626 of thine inheritance. H5159 The people H5971 of thy holiness H6944 have possessed H3423 it but a little while: H4705 our adversaries H6862 have trodden down H947 thy sanctuary. H4720 We are thine: thou never H5769 barest rule H4910 over them; they were not called H7121 by thy name. H8034
Be not wroth H7107 very sore, H3966 O LORD, H3068 neither remember H2142 iniquity H5771 for ever: H5703 behold, see, H5027 we beseech thee, we are all thy people. H5971 Thy holy H6944 cities H5892 are a wilderness, H4057 Zion H6726 is a wilderness, H4057 Jerusalem H3389 a desolation. H8077 Our holy H6944 and our beautiful H8597 house, H1004 where our fathers H1 praised H1984 thee, is burned up H8316 with fire: H784 and all our pleasant things H4261 are laid waste. H2723 Wilt thou refrain H662 thyself for these things, O LORD? H3068 wilt thou hold thy peace, H2814 and afflict H6031 us very sore? H3966

Commentary on Joel 2 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 2
In this chapter we have,
Thus the beginning of this chapter is made terrible with the tokens of God's wrath, but the latter end of it made comfortable with the assurances of his favour, and it is in the way of repentance that this blessed change is made; so that, though it is only the last paragraph of the chapter that points directly at gospel-times, yet the whole may be improved as a type and figure, representing the curses of the law invading men for their sins, and the comforts of the gospel flowing in to them upon their repentance.
Joe 2:1-11
Here we have God contending with his own professing people for their sins and executing upon them the judgment written in the law (Deu. 28:42), The fruit of thy land shall the locust consume, which was one of those diseases of Egypt that God would bring upon them, v. 60.
Joe 2:12-17
We have here an earnest exhortation to repentance, inferred from that desolating judgment described and threatened in the foregoing verses: Therefore now turn you to the Lord.
Joe 2:18-27
See how ready God is to succour and relieve his people, how he waits to be gracious; as soon as ever they humble themselves under this hand, and pray, and seek his face, he immediately meets them with his favours. They prayed that God would spare them, and see here with what good words and comfortable words he answered them; for God's promises are real answers to the prayers of faith, because with him saying and doing are not two things. Now observe,
Joe 2:28-32
The promises of corn, and wine, and oil, in the foregoing verses, would be very acceptable to a wasted country; but here we are taught that we must not rest in those things. God has reserved some better things for us, and these verses have reference to those better things, both the kingdom of grace and the kingdom of glory, with the happiness of true believers in both. We are here told,
