33 And I G2504 knew G1492 him G846 not: G3756 but G235 he that sent G3992 me G3165 to baptize G907 with G1722 water, G5204 the same G1565 said G2036 unto me, G3427 Upon G1909 whom G3739 G302 thou shalt see G1492 the Spirit G4151 descending, G2597 and G2532 remaining G3306 on G1909 him, G846 the same G3778 is G2076 he which baptizeth G907 with G1722 the Holy G40 Ghost. G4151
And G2532 preached, G2784 saying, G3004 There cometh G2064 one mightier than G2478 I G3450 after G3694 me, G3450 the latchet G2438 of whose G3739 shoes G846 G5266 I am G1510 not G3756 worthy G2425 to stoop down G2955 and unloose. G3089 I G1473 indeed G3303 have baptized G907 you G5209 with G1722 water: G5204 but G1161 he G846 shall baptize G907 you G5209 with G1722 the Holy G40 Ghost. G4151
While Peter G4074 yet G2089 spake G2980 these G5023 words, G4487 the Holy G40 Ghost G4151 fell G1968 on G1909 all G3956 them which heard G191 the word. G3056 And G2532 they of G1537 the circumcision G4061 which believed G4103 were astonished, G1839 as many as G3745 came with G4905 Peter, G4074 because G3754 that on G1909 the Gentiles G1484 also G2532 was poured out G1632 the gift G1431 of the Holy G40 Ghost. G4151 For G1063 they heard G191 them G846 speak with G2980 tongues, G1100 and G2532 magnify G3170 God. G2316 Then G5119 answered G611 Peter, G4074 Can G3385 G1410 any man G5100 forbid G2967 water, G5204 that these G5128 should G907 not G3361 be baptized, G907 which G3748 have received G2983 the Holy G40 Ghost G4151 as G2532 well as G2531 we? G2249
And G1161 as G1722 I G3165 began G756 to speak, G2980 the Holy G40 Ghost G4151 fell G1968 on G1909 them, G846 as G5618 G2532 on G1909 us G2248 at G1722 the beginning. G746 Then G1161 remembered I G3415 the word G4487 of the Lord, G2962 how G5613 that he said, G3004 John G2491 indeed G3303 baptized G907 with water; G5204 but G1161 ye G5210 shall be baptized G907 with G1722 the Holy G40 Ghost. G4151
He said G2036 unto G4314 them, G846 G1487 Have ye received G2983 the Holy G40 Ghost G4151 since ye believed? G4100 And G1161 they said G2036 unto G4314 him, G846 G235 We have G191 not so much as G3761 heard G191 whether G1487 there be any G2076 Holy G40 Ghost. G4151 And G5037 he said G2036 unto G4314 them, G846 Unto G1519 what G5101 then G3767 were ye baptized? G907 And G1161 they said, G2036 Unto G1519 John's G2491 baptism. G908 Then G1161 said G2036 Paul, G3972 John G2491 verily G3303 baptized G907 with the baptism G908 of repentance, G3341 saying G3004 unto the people, G2992 that G2443 they should believe G4100 on G1519 him which should come G2064 after G3326 him, G846 that is, G5123 on G1519 Christ G5547 Jesus. G2424 When G1161 they heard G191 this, they were baptized G907 in G1519 the name G3686 of the Lord G2962 Jesus. G2424 And G2532 when Paul G3972 had laid G2007 his hands G5495 upon G2007 them, G846 the Holy G40 Ghost G4151 came G2064 on G1909 them; G846 and G5037 they spake G2980 with tongues, G1100 and G2532 prophesied. G4395
Not G3756 by G1537 works G2041 of G1722 righteousness G1343 which G3739 we G2249 have done, G4160 but G235 according to G2596 his G846 mercy G1656 he saved G4982 us, G2248 by G1223 the washing G3067 of regeneration, G3824 and G2532 renewing G342 of the Holy G40 Ghost; G4151 Which G3739 he shed G1632 on G1909 us G2248 abundantly G4146 through G1223 Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 our G2257 Saviour; G4990
Then G5119 cometh G3854 Jesus G2424 from G575 Galilee G1056 to G1909 Jordan G2446 unto G4314 John, G2491 to be baptized G907 of G5259 him. G846 But G1161 John G2491 forbad G1254 him, saying, G3004 I G1473 have G2192 need G5532 to be baptized G907 of G5259 thee, G4675 and G2532 comest G2064 thou G4771 to G4314 me? G3165 And G1161 Jesus G2424 answering G611 said G2036 unto G4314 him, G846 Suffer G863 it to be so now: G737 for G1063 thus G3779 it becometh G4241 G2076 us G2254 to fulfil G4137 all G3956 righteousness. G1343 Then G5119 he suffered G863 him. G846

Commentary on John 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
An Exposition, With Practical Observations, of
The Gospel According to ST. John
Chapter 1
The scope and design of this chapter is to confirm our faith in Christ as the eternal Son of God, and the true Messiah and Saviour of the world, that we may be brought to receive him, and rely upon him, as our Prophet, Priest, and King, and to give up ourselves to be ruled, and taught, and saved by him. In order to this, we have here,
Jhn 1:1-5
Austin says (de Civitate Dei, lib. 10, cap. 29) that his friend Simplicius told him he had heard a Platonic philosopher say that these first verses of St. John's gospel were worthy to be written in letters of gold. The learned Francis Junius, in the account he gives of his own life, tells how he was in his youth infected with loose notions in religion, and by the grace of God was wonderfully recovered by reading accidentally these verses in a bible which his father had designedly laid in his way. He says that he observed such a divinity in the argument, such an authority and majesty in the style, that his flesh trembled, and he was struck with such amazement that for a whole day he scarcely knew where he was or what he did; and thence he dates the beginning of his being religious. Let us enquire what there is in those strong lines. The evangelist here lays down the great truth he is to prove, that Jesus Christ is God, one with the Father. Observe,
Jhn 1:6-14
The evangelist designs to bring in John Baptist bearing an honourable testimony to Jesus Christ, Now in these verses, before he does this,
Jhn 1:15-18
In these verses,
Jhn 1:19-28
We have here the testimony of John, which he delivered to the messengers who were sent from Jerusalem to examine him. Observe here,
Jhn 1:29-36
We have in these verses an account of John's testimony concerning Jesus Christ, which he witnessed to his own disciples that followed him. As soon as ever Christ was baptized he was immediately hurried into the wilderness, to be tempted; and there he was forty days. During his absence John had continued to bear testimony to him, and to tell the people of him; but now at last he sees Jesus coming to him, returning from the wilderness of temptation. As soon as that conflict was over Christ immediately returned to John, who was preaching and baptizing. Now Christ was tempted for example and encouragement to us; and this teaches us,
Jhn 1:37-42
We have here the turning over of two disciples from John to Jesus, and one of them fetching in a third, and these are the first-fruits of Christ's disciples; see how small the church was in its beginnings, and what the dawning of the day of its great things was.
Jhn 1:43-51
We have here the call of Philip and Nathanael.
