15 As G2531 the Father G3962 knoweth G1097 me, G3165 even so G2504 know G1097 I G2504 the Father: G3962 and G2532 I lay down G5087 my G3450 life G5590 for G5228 the sheep. G4263
I G1473 am G1510 the good G2570 shepherd: G4166 the good G2570 shepherd G4166 giveth G5087 his G846 life G5590 for G5228 the sheep. G4263
All things G3956 are delivered G3860 unto me G3427 of G5259 my G3450 Father: G3962 and G2532 no man G3762 knoweth G1921 the Son, G5207 but G1508 the Father; G3962 neither G3761 knoweth G1921 any man G5100 the Father, G3962 save G1508 the Son, G5207 and he G2532 to G3739 whomsoever G1437 the Son G5207 will G1014 reveal G601 him.
For G3754 Christ G5547 also G2532 hath once G530 suffered G3958 for G4012 sins, G266 the just G1342 for G5228 the unjust, G94 that G2443 he might bring G4317 us G2248 to God, G2316 being put to death G2289 G3303 in the flesh, G4561 but G1161 quickened G2227 by the Spirit: G4151
Even as G5618 the Son G5207 of man G444 came G2064 not G3756 to be ministered unto, G1247 but G235 to minister, G1247 and G2532 to give G1325 his G846 life G5590 a ransom G3083 for G473 many. G4183
Yet it pleased H2654 the LORD H3068 to bruise H1792 him; he hath put him to grief: H2470 when thou shalt make H7760 his soul H5315 an offering for sin, H817 he shall see H7200 his seed, H2233 he shall prolong H748 his days, H3117 and the pleasure H2656 of the LORD H3068 shall prosper H6743 in his hand. H3027
Therefore G5124 G1223 doth G25 my Father G3962 love G25 me, G3165 because G3754 I G1473 lay down G5087 my G3450 life, G5590 that G2443 I might take G2983 it G846 again. G3825 No man G3762 taketh G142 it G846 from G575 me, G1700 but G235 I G1473 lay G5087 it G846 down G5087 of G575 myself. G1683 I have G2192 power G1849 to lay G5087 it G846 down, G5087 and G2532 I have G2192 power G1849 to take G2983 it G846 again. G3825 This G5026 commandment G1785 have I received G2983 of G3844 my G3450 Father. G3962
Who G3739 his own self G846 bare G399 our G2257 sins G266 in G1722 his own G846 body G4983 on G1909 the tree, G3586 that G2443 we, G2198 being dead G581 to sins, G266 should live G2198 unto righteousness: G1343 by G3739 whose G846 stripes G3468 ye were healed. G2390
No man G3762 hath seen G3708 God G2316 at any time; G4455 the only begotten G3439 Son, G5207 which G3588 is G5607 in G1519 the bosom G2859 of the Father, G3962 he G1565 hath declared G1834 him.
Awake, H5782 O sword, H2719 against my shepherd, H7462 and against the man H1397 that is my fellow, H5997 saith H5002 the LORD H3068 of hosts: H6635 smite H5221 the shepherd, H7462 and the sheep H6629 shall be scattered: H6327 and I will turn H7725 mine hand H3027 upon the little ones. H6819
Surely H403 he hath borne H5375 our griefs, H2483 and carried H5445 our sorrows: H4341 yet we did esteem H2803 him stricken, H5060 smitten H5221 of God, H430 and afflicted. H6031 But he was wounded H2490 for our transgressions, H6588 he was bruised H1792 for our iniquities: H5771 the chastisement H4148 of our peace H7965 was upon him; and with his stripes H2250 we are healed. H7495 All we like sheep H6629 have gone astray; H8582 we have turned H6437 every one H376 to his own way; H1870 and the LORD H3068 hath laid H6293 on him the iniquity H5771 of us all.
And after H310 threescore H8346 and two H8147 weeks H7620 shall Messiah H4899 be cut off, H3772 but not for himself: and the people H5971 of the prince H5057 that shall come H935 shall destroy H7843 the city H5892 and the sanctuary; H6944 and the end H7093 thereof shall be with a flood, H7858 and unto the end H7093 of the war H4421 desolations H8074 are determined. H2782
And G2532 I saw G1492 a strong G2478 angel G32 proclaiming G2784 with a loud G3173 voice, G5456 Who G5101 is G2076 worthy G514 to open G455 the book, G975 and G2532 to loose G3089 the seals G4973 thereof? G846 And G2532 no man G3762 in G1722 heaven, G3772 nor G3761 in G1909 earth, G1093 neither G3761 under G5270 the earth, G1093 was able G1410 to open G455 the book, G975 neither G3761 to look G991 thereon. G846 And G2532 I G1473 wept G2799 much, G4183 because G3754 no man G3762 was found G2147 worthy G514 to open G455 and G2532 to read G314 the book, G975 neither G3777 to look G991 thereon. G846 And G2532 one G1520 of G1537 the elders G4245 saith G3004 unto me, G3427 Weep G2799 not: G3361 behold, G2400 the Lion G3023 of G5607 G1537 the tribe G5443 of Juda, G2455 the Root G4491 of David, G1138 hath prevailed G3528 to open G455 the book, G975 and G2532 to loose G3089 the seven G2033 seals G4973 thereof. G846 And G2532 I beheld, G1492 and, G2532 lo, G2400 in G1722 the midst G3319 of the throne G2362 and G2532 of the four G5064 beasts, G2226 and G2532 in G1722 the midst G3319 of the elders, G4245 stood G2476 a Lamb G721 as G5613 it had been slain, G4969 having G2192 seven G2033 horns G2768 and G2532 seven G2033 eyes, G3788 which G3739 are G1526 the seven G2033 Spirits G4151 of God G2316 sent forth G649 into G1519 all G3956 the earth. G1093 And G2532 he came G2064 and G2532 took G2983 the book G975 out of G1537 the right hand G1188 of him that sat G2521 upon G1909 the throne. G2362 And G2532 when G3753 he had taken G2983 the book, G975 the four G5064 beasts G2226 and G2532 four G5064 and twenty G1501 elders G4245 fell down G4098 before G1799 the Lamb, G721 having G2192 every one of them G1538 harps, G2788 and G2532 golden G5552 vials G5357 full G1073 of odours, G2368 which G3739 are G1526 the prayers G4335 of saints. G40 And G2532 they sung G103 a new G2537 song, G5603 saying, G3004 Thou art G1488 worthy G514 to take G2983 the book, G975 and G2532 to open G455 the seals G4973 thereof: G846 for G3754 thou wast slain, G4969 and G2532 hast redeemed G59 us G2248 to God G2316 by G1722 thy G4675 blood G129 out of G1537 every G3956 kindred, G5443 and G2532 tongue, G1100 and G2532 people, G2992 and G2532 nation; G1484
Who G3739 gave G1325 himself G1438 for G5228 us, G2257 that G2443 he might redeem G3084 us G2248 from G575 all G3956 iniquity, G458 and G2532 purify G2511 unto himself G1438 a peculiar G4041 people, G2992 zealous G2207 of good G2570 works. G2041
Yet G2532 ye have G1097 not G3756 known G1097 him; G846 but G1161 I G1473 know G1492 him: G846 and G2532 if G1437 I should say, G2036 G3754 I know G1492 him G846 not, G3756 I shall be G2071 a liar G5583 like G3664 unto you: G5216 but G235 I know G1492 him, G846 and G2532 keep G5083 his G846 saying. G3056
Not G3756 that G3754 any man G5100 hath seen G3708 the Father, G3962 save G1508 he which G3588 is G3844 G5607 of God, G2316 he G3778 hath seen G3708 the Father. G3962
In G1722 that G846 hour G5610 Jesus G2424 rejoiced in G21 spirit, G4151 and G2532 said, G2036 I thank G1843 thee, G4671 O Father, G3962 Lord G2962 of heaven G3772 and G2532 earth, G1093 that G3754 thou hast hid G613 these things G5023 from G575 the wise G4680 and G2532 prudent, G4908 and G2532 hast revealed G601 them G846 unto babes: G3516 even so, G3483 Father; G3962 for G3754 so G3779 it seemed G1096 good G2107 in G1715 thy G4675 sight. Commentary on John 10 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 10
In this chapter we have,
Jhn 10:1-18
It is not certain whether this discourse was at the feast of dedication in the winter (spoken of v. 22), which may be taken as the date, not only of what follows, but of what goes before (that which countenances this is, that Christ, in his discourse there, carries on the metaphor of the sheep, v. 26, 27, whence it seems that that discourse and this were at the same time); or whether this was a continuation of his parley with the Pharisees, in the close of the foregoing chapter. The Pharisees supported themselves in their opposition to Christ with this principle, that they were the pastors of the church, and that Jesus, having no commission from them, was an intruder and an impostor, and therefore the people were bound in duty to stick to then, against him. In opposition to this, Christ here describes who were the false shepherds, and who the true, leaving them to infer what they were.
Jhn 10:19-21
We have here an account of the people's different sentiments concerning Christ, on occasion of the foregoing discourse; there was a division, a schism, among them; they differed in their opinions, which threw them into heats and parties. Such a ferment as this they had been in before (ch. 7:43; 9:16); and where there has once been a division again. Rents are sooner made than made up or mended. This division was occasioned by the sayings of Christ, which, one would think, should rather have united them all in him as their centre; but they set them at variance, as Christ foresaw, Lu. 12:51. But it is better that men should be divided about the doctrine of Christ than united in the service of sin, Lu. 11:21. See what the debate was in particular.
Jhn 10:22-38
We have here another rencounter between Christ and the Jews in the temple, in which it is hard to say which is more strange, the gracious words that came out of his mouth or the spiteful ones that came out of theirs.
Jhn 10:39-42
We have here the issue of the conference with the Jews. One would have thought it would have convinced and melted them, but their hearts were hardened. Here we are told,
