1 I G1473 am G1510 the true G228 vine, G288 and G2532 my G3450 Father G3962 is G2076 the husbandman. G1092
Yet I had planted H5193 thee a noble vine, H8321 wholly a right H571 seed: H2233 how then art thou turned H2015 into the degenerate plant H5494 of a strange H5237 vine H1612 unto me?
For G1063 we are G2070 labourers together G4904 with God: G2316 ye are G2075 God's G2316 husbandry, G1091 ye are God's G2316 building. G3619
Now will I sing H7891 to my wellbeloved H3039 a song H7892 of my beloved H1730 touching his vineyard. H3754 My wellbeloved H3039 hath a vineyard H3754 in a very fruitful H1121 H8081 hill: H7161 And he fenced H5823 it, and gathered out the stones H5619 thereof, and planted H5193 it with the choicest vine, H8321 and built H1129 a tower H4026 in the midst H8432 of it, and also made H2672 a winepress H3342 therein: and he looked H6960 that it should bring forth H6213 grapes, H6025 and it brought forth H6213 wild grapes. H891 And now, O inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem, H3389 and men H376 of Judah, H3063 judge, H8199 I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard. H3754 What could have been done H6213 more to my vineyard, H3754 that I have not done H6213 in it? wherefore, H4069 when I looked H6960 that it should bring forth H6213 grapes, H6025 brought it forth H6213 wild grapes? H891 And now go to; I will tell H3045 you what I will do H6213 to my vineyard: H3754 I will take away H5493 the hedge H4881 thereof, and it shall be eaten up; H1197 and break down H6555 the wall H1447 thereof, and it shall be trodden down: H4823 And I will lay H7896 it waste: H1326 it shall not be pruned, H2168 nor digged; H5737 but there shall come up H5927 briers H8068 and thorns: H7898 I will also command H6680 the clouds H5645 that they rain H4305 no rain H4306 upon it. For the vineyard H3754 of the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 is the house H1004 of Israel, H3478 and the men H376 of Judah H3063 his pleasant H8191 plant: H5194 and he looked H6960 for judgment, H4941 but behold oppression; H4939 for righteousness, H6666 but behold a cry. H6818
Thou hast brought H5265 a vine H1612 out of Egypt: H4714 thou hast cast out H1644 the heathen, H1471 and planted H5193 it. Thou preparedst H6437 room before H6440 it, and didst cause it to take deep H8328 root, H8327 and it filled H4390 the land. H776 The hills H2022 were covered H3680 with the shadow H6738 of it, and the boughs H6057 thereof were like the goodly H410 cedars. H730 She sent out H7971 her boughs H7105 unto the sea, H3220 and her branches H3127 unto the river. H5104 Why hast thou then broken down H6555 her hedges, H1447 so that all they which pass H5674 by the way H1870 do pluck H717 her? The boar H2386 out of the wood H3293 doth waste H3765 it, and the wild beast H2123 of the field H7704 doth devour H7462 it. Return, H7725 we beseech thee, O God H430 of hosts: H6635 look down H5027 from heaven, H8064 and behold, H7200 and visit H6485 this vine; H1612 And the vineyard H3657 H3661 which thy right hand H3225 hath planted, H5193 and the branch H1121 that thou madest strong H553 for thyself. It is burned H8313 with fire, H784 it is cut down: H3683 they perish H6 at the rebuke H1606 of thy countenance. H6440 Let thy hand H3027 be upon the man H376 of thy right hand, H3225 upon the son H1121 of man H120 whom thou madest strong H553 for thyself. So will not we go back H5472 from thee: quicken H2421 us, and we will call H7121 upon thy name. H8034 Turn us again, H7725 O LORD H3068 God H430 of hosts, H6635 cause thy face H6440 to shine; H215 and we shall be saved. H3467
For G1063 my G3450 flesh G4561 is G2076 meat G1035 indeed, G230 and G2532 my G3450 blood G129 is G2076 drink G4213 indeed. G230
He spake G3004 also G1161 this G5026 parable; G3850 A certain G5100 man had G2192 a fig tree G4808 planted G5452 in G1722 his G846 vineyard; G290 and G2532 he came G2064 and sought G2212 fruit G2590 thereon, G1722 G846 and G2532 found G2147 none. G3756
Hear G191 another G243 parable: G3850 There was G2258 a certain G444 G5100 householder, G3617 which G3748 planted G5452 a vineyard, G290 and G2532 hedged G5418 it G846 round about, G4060 and G2532 digged G3736 a winepress G3025 in G1722 it, G846 and G2532 built G3618 a tower, G4444 and G2532 let G1554 it G846 out G1554 to husbandmen, G1092 and G2532 went into a far country: G589
In that day H3117 shall the branch H6780 of the LORD H3068 be beautiful H6643 and glorious, H3519 and the fruit H6529 of the earth H776 shall be excellent H1347 and comely for H8597 them that are escaped H6413 of Israel. H3478
That was G2258 the true G228 Light, G5457 which G3739 lighteth G5461 every man G3956 G444 that cometh G2064 into G1519 the world. G2889
Then G3767 Jesus G2424 said G2036 unto them, G846 Verily, G281 verily, G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 Moses G3475 gave G1325 you G5213 not G3756 that bread G740 from G1537 heaven; G3772 but G235 my G3450 Father G3962 giveth G1325 you G5213 the true G228 bread G740 from G1537 heaven. G3772
And G2532 he began G756 to speak G3004 unto them G846 by G1722 parables. G3850 A certain man G444 planted G5452 a vineyard, G290 and G2532 set G4060 an hedge about G5418 it, and G2532 digged G3736 a place for the winefat, G5276 and G2532 built G3618 a tower, G4444 and G2532 let G1554 it G846 out G1554 to husbandmen, G1092 and G2532 went into a far country. G589
Hear H8085 now, O Joshua H3091 the high H1419 priest, H3548 thou, and thy fellows H7453 that sit H3427 before H6440 thee: for they are men H582 wondered at: H4159 for, behold, I will bring forth H935 my servant H5650 the BRANCH. H6780
Israel H3478 is an empty H1238 vine, H1612 he bringeth forth H7737 fruit H6529 unto himself: according to the multitude H7230 of his fruit H6529 he hath increased H7235 the altars; H4196 according to the goodness H2896 of his land H776 they have made goodly H2895 images. H4676
Son H1121 of man, H120 What is the vine H1612 tree H6086 more than any tree, H6086 or than a branch H2156 which is among the trees H6086 of the forest? H3293 Shall wood H6086 be taken H3947 thereof to do H6213 any work? H4399 or will men take H3947 a pin H3489 of it to hang H8518 any vessel H3627 thereon? Behold, it is cast H5414 into the fire H784 for fuel; H402 the fire H784 devoureth H398 both H8147 the ends H7098 of it, and the midst H8432 of it is burned. H2787 Is it meet H6743 for any work? H4399 Behold, when it was whole, H8549 it was meet H6213 for no work: H4399 how much less shall it be meet H6213 yet for any work, H4399 when the fire H784 hath devoured H398 it, and it is burned? H2787 Therefore thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 As the vine H1612 tree H6086 among the trees H6086 of the forest, H3293 which I have given H5414 to the fire H784 for fuel, H402 so will I give H5414 the inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem. H3389
Thy people H5971 also shall be all righteous: H6662 they shall inherit H3423 the land H776 for ever, H5769 the branch H5342 of my planting, H4302 the work H4639 of my hands, H3027 that I may be glorified. H6286
Solomon H8010 had a vineyard H3754 at Baalhamon; H1174 he let out H5414 the vineyard H3754 unto keepers; H5201 every one H376 for the fruit H6529 thereof was to bring H935 a thousand H505 pieces of silver. H3701 My vineyard, H3754 which is mine, is before H6440 me: thou, O Solomon, H8010 must have a thousand, H505 and those that keep H5201 the fruit H6529 thereof two hundred. H3967
The sceptre H7626 shall not depart H5493 from Judah, H3063 nor a lawgiver H2710 from between his feet, H7272 until H3588 Shiloh H7886 come; H935 and unto him shall the gathering H3349 of the people H5971 be. Binding H631 his foal H5895 unto the vine, H1612 and his ass's H860 colt H1121 unto the choice vine; H8321 he washed H3526 his garments H3830 in wine, H3196 and his clothes H5497 in the blood H1818 of grapes: H6025
Many H7227 pastors H7462 have destroyed H7843 my vineyard, H3754 they have trodden H947 my portion H2513 under foot, H947 they have made H5414 my pleasant H2532 portion H2513 a desolate H8077 wilderness. H4057
To appoint H7760 unto them that mourn H57 in Zion, H6726 to give H5414 unto them beauty H6287 for ashes, H665 the oil H8081 of joy H8342 for mourning, H60 the garment H4594 of praise H8416 for the spirit H7307 of heaviness; H3544 that they might be called H7121 trees H352 of righteousness, H6664 the planting H4302 of the LORD, H3068 that he might be glorified. Commentary on John 15 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 15
It is generally agreed that Christ's discourse in this and the next chapter was at the close of the last supper, the night in which he was betrayed, and it is a continued discourse, not interrupted as that in the foregoing chapter was; and what he chooses to discourse of is very pertinent to the present sad occasion of a farewell sermon. Now that he was about to leave them,
Jhn 15:1-8
Here Christ discourses concerning the fruit, the fruits of the Spirit, which his disciples were to bring forth, under the similitude of a vine. Observe here,
Jhn 15:9-17
Christ, who is love itself, is here discoursing concerning love, a fourfold love.
To induce them to keep his commandments, he urges,
Jhn 15:18-25
Here Christ discourses concerning hatred, which is the character and genius of the devil's kingdom, as love is of the kingdom of Christ. Observe here,
Jhn 15:26-27
Christ having spoken of the great opposition which his gospel was likely to meet with in the world, and the hardships that would be put upon the preachers of it, lest any should fear that they and it would be run down by that violent torrent, he here intimates to all those that were well-wishers to his cause and interest what effectual provision was made for supporting it, both by the principal testimony of the Spirit (v. 26), and the subordinate testimony of the apostles (v. 27), and testimonies are the proper supports of truth.
