28 I came forth G1831 from G3844 the Father, G3962 and G2532 am come G2064 into G1519 the world: G2889 again, G3825 I leave G863 the world, G2889 and G2532 go G4198 to G4314 the Father. G3962
Jesus G2424 knowing G1492 that G3754 the Father G3962 had given G1325 all things G3956 into G1519 his G846 hands, G5495 and G2532 that G3754 he was come G1831 from G575 God, G2316 and G2532 went G5217 to G4314 God; G2316
Jesus G2424 answered G611 and G2532 said G2036 unto them, G846 Though G2579 I G1473 bear record G3140 of G4012 myself, G1683 yet my G3450 record G3141 is G2076 true: G227 for G3754 I know G1492 whence G4159 I came, G2064 and G2532 whither G4226 I go; G5217 but G1161 ye G5210 cannot G3756 tell G1492 whence G4159 I come, G2064 and G2532 whither G4226 I go. G5217
Now G1161 before G4253 the feast G1859 of the passover, G3957 when Jesus G2424 knew G1492 that G3754 his G846 hour G5610 was come G2064 that G2443 he should depart G3327 out of G1537 this G5127 world G2889 unto G4314 the Father, G3962 having loved G25 his own G2398 which G3588 were in G1722 the world, G2889 he loved G25 them G846 unto G1519 the end. G5056
But G1161 now G3568 I go my way G5217 to G4314 him that sent G3992 me; G3165 and G2532 none G3762 of G1537 you G5216 asketh G2065 me, G3165 Whither G4226 goest thou? G5217
Ye have heard G191 how G3754 I G1473 said G2036 unto you, G5213 I go away, G5217 and G2532 come G2064 again unto G4314 you. G5209 If G1487 ye loved G25 me, G3165 G302 ye would rejoice, G5463 because G3754 I said, G2036 I go G4198 unto G4314 the Father: G3962 for G3754 my G3450 Father G3962 is G2076 greater than G3187 I. G3450
And G2532 now G3765 I am G1510 no more G3765 in G1722 the world, G2889 but G2532 these G3778 are G1526 in G1722 the world, G2889 and G2532 I G1473 come G2064 to G4314 thee. G4571 Holy G40 Father, G3962 keep G5083 through G1722 thine own G4675 name G3686 those G846 whom G3739 thou hast given G1325 me, G3427 that G2443 they may be G5600 one, G1520 as G2531 we G2249 are.
And G1161 now G3568 come I G2064 to G4314 thee; G4571 and G2532 these things G5023 I speak G2980 in G1722 the world, G2889 that G2443 they might have G2192 my G1699 joy G5479 fulfilled G4137 in G1722 themselves. G846
And G2532 when he had spoken G2036 these things, G5023 while they G846 beheld, G991 he was taken up; G1869 and G2532 a cloud G3507 received G5274 him G846 out of G575 their G846 sight. G3788 And G2532 while G5613 they looked stedfastly G2258 G816 toward G1519 heaven G3772 as he G846 went up, G4198 G2532 behold, G2400 two G1417 men G435 stood by G3936 them G846 in G1722 white G3022 apparel; G2066 Which G3739 also G2532 said, G2036 Ye men G435 of Galilee, G1057 why G5101 stand ye G2476 gazing up G1689 into G1519 heaven? G3772 this same G3778 Jesus, G2424 which G3588 is taken up G353 from G575 you G5216 into G1519 heaven, G3772 shall G2064 so G3779 come G2064 in like manner as G3739 G5158 ye have seen G2300 him G846 go G4198 into G1519 heaven. Commentary on John 16 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 16
Among other glorious things God hath spoken of himself this is one, I wound, and I heal, Deu. 32:39. Christ's discourse in this chapter, which continues and concludes his farewell sermon to his disciples, does so.
Jhn 16:1-6
Christ dealt faithfully with his disciples when he sent them forth on his errands, for he told them the worst of it, that they might sit down and count the cost. He had told them in the chapter before to expect the world's hatred; now here in these verses,
Jhn 16:7-15
As it was usual with the Old Testament prophets to comfort the church in its calamities with the promise of the Messiah (Isa. 9:6; Mic. 5:2; Zec. 3:8); so, the Messiah being come, the promise of the Spirit was the great cordial, and is still.
Three things we have here concerning the Comforter's coming:-
Jhn 16:16-22
Our Lord Jesus, for the comfort of his sorrowful disciples, here promises that he would visit them again.
Jhn 16:23-27
An answer to their askings is here promised, for their further comfort. Now there are two ways of asking: asking by way of enquiry, which is the asking of the ignorant; and asking by way of request, which is the asking of the indigent. Christ here speaks of both.
Now for this he gives a reason (v. 25), which plainly refers to this promise, that they should not need to ask questions: "These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs, in such a way as you have thought not so plain and intelligible as you could have wished, but the time cometh when I shall show you plainly, as plainly as you can desire, of the Father, so that you shall not need to ask questions.'
Jhn 16:28-33
Two things Christ here comforts his disciples with:-
These words, and needest not that any man should ask thee, may bespeak either,
