32 Behold, G2400 the hour G5610 cometh, G2064 yea, G2532 is G2064 now G3568 come, G2064 that G2443 ye shall be scattered, G4650 every man G1538 to G1519 his own, G2398 and G2532 shall leave G863 me G1691 alone: G3441 and yet G2532 I am G1510 not G3756 alone, G3441 because G3754 the Father G3962 is G2076 with G3326 me. G1700
And G2532 he that sent G3992 me G3165 is G2076 with G3326 me: G1700 the Father G3962 hath G863 not G3756 left G863 me G3165 alone; G3441 for G3754 I G1473 do G4160 always G3842 those things that please G701 him. G846
Then G5119 saith G3004 Jesus G2424 unto them, G846 All G3956 ye G5210 shall be offended G4624 because G1722 of me G1722 G1698 this G5026 night: G3571 for G1063 it is written, G1125 I will smite G3960 the shepherd, G4166 and G2532 the sheep G4263 of the flock G4167 shall be scattered abroad. G1287
Awake, H5782 O sword, H2719 against my shepherd, H7462 and against the man H1397 that is my fellow, H5997 saith H5002 the LORD H3068 of hosts: H6635 smite H5221 the shepherd, H7462 and the sheep H6629 shall be scattered: H6327 and I will turn H7725 mine hand H3027 upon the little ones. H6819
I gave H5414 my back H1460 to the smiters, H5221 and my cheeks H3895 to them that plucked off H4803 the hair: I hid H5641 not my face H6440 from shame H3639 and spitting. H7536 For the Lord H136 GOD H3069 will help H5826 me; therefore shall I not be confounded: H3637 therefore have I set H7760 my face H6440 like a flint, H2496 and I know H3045 that I shall not be ashamed. H954 He is near H7138 that justifieth H6663 me; who will contend H7378 with me? let us stand H5975 together: H3162 who is mine adversary? H1167 H4941 let him come near H5066 to me. Behold, the Lord H136 GOD H3069 will help H5826 me; who is he that shall condemn H7561 me? lo, they all shall wax old H1086 as a garment; H899 the moth H6211 shall eat them up. H398
At G1722 my G3450 first G4413 answer G627 no man G3762 stood G4836 with me, G3427 but G235 all G3956 men forsook G1459 me: G3165 I pray God that it may G3049 not G3361 be laid G3049 to their charge. G846 Notwithstanding G1161 the Lord G2962 stood G3936 with me, G3427 and G2532 strengthened G1743 me; G3165 that G2443 by G1223 me G1700 the preaching G2782 might be fully known, G4135 and G2532 that all G3956 the Gentiles G1484 might hear: G191 and G2532 I was delivered G4506 out of G1537 the mouth G4750 of the lion. G3023
Believest thou G4100 not G3756 that G3754 I G1473 am G2076 in G1722 the Father, G3962 and G2532 the Father G3962 in G1722 me? G1698 the words G4487 that G3739 I G1473 speak G2980 unto you G5213 I speak G2980 not G3756 of G575 myself: G1683 but G1161 the Father G3962 that dwelleth G3306 in G1722 me, G1698 he G846 doeth G4160 the works. G2041 Believe G4100 me G3427 that G3754 I G1473 am in G1722 the Father, G3962 and G2532 the Father G3962 in G1722 me: G1698 or else G1490 believe G4100 me G3427 for G1223 the very G846 works' G2041 sake. G846
But G235 the hour G5610 cometh, G2064 and G2532 now G3568 is, G2076 when G3753 the true G228 worshippers G4353 shall worship G4352 the Father G3962 in G1722 spirit G4151 and G2532 in truth: G225 for G2532 G1063 the Father G3962 seeketh G2212 such G5108 to worship G4352 him. G846
And G2532 Jesus G2424 saith G3004 unto them, G846 G3754 All ye G3956 shall be offended G4624 because of G1722 me G1722 G1698 this G5026 night: G3571 for G3754 it is written, G1125 I will smite G3960 the shepherd, G4166 and G2532 the sheep G4263 shall be scattered. G1287
And G1161 Saul G4569 was G2258 consenting G4909 unto his G846 death. G336 And G1161 at G1722 that G1565 time G2250 there was G1096 a great G3173 persecution G1375 against G1909 the church G1577 which G3588 was at G1722 Jerusalem; G2414 and G5037 they were G1289 all G3956 scattered abroad G1289 throughout G2596 the regions G5561 of Judaea G2449 and G2532 Samaria, G4540 except G4133 the apostles. G652
These things G5023 have I spoken G2980 unto you G5213 in G1722 proverbs: G3942 but G235 the time G5610 cometh, G2064 when G3753 I shall G2980 no more G3765 speak G2980 unto you G5213 in G1722 proverbs, G3942 but G235 I shall shew G312 you G5213 plainly G3954 of G4012 the Father. G3962
But G1161 all G3650 this G5124 was done, G1096 that G2443 the scriptures G1124 of the prophets G4396 might be fulfilled. G4137 Then G5119 all G3956 the disciples G3101 forsook G863 him, G846 and fled. G5343

Commentary on John 16 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 16
Among other glorious things God hath spoken of himself this is one, I wound, and I heal, Deu. 32:39. Christ's discourse in this chapter, which continues and concludes his farewell sermon to his disciples, does so.
Jhn 16:1-6
Christ dealt faithfully with his disciples when he sent them forth on his errands, for he told them the worst of it, that they might sit down and count the cost. He had told them in the chapter before to expect the world's hatred; now here in these verses,
Jhn 16:7-15
As it was usual with the Old Testament prophets to comfort the church in its calamities with the promise of the Messiah (Isa. 9:6; Mic. 5:2; Zec. 3:8); so, the Messiah being come, the promise of the Spirit was the great cordial, and is still.
Three things we have here concerning the Comforter's coming:-
Jhn 16:16-22
Our Lord Jesus, for the comfort of his sorrowful disciples, here promises that he would visit them again.
Jhn 16:23-27
An answer to their askings is here promised, for their further comfort. Now there are two ways of asking: asking by way of enquiry, which is the asking of the ignorant; and asking by way of request, which is the asking of the indigent. Christ here speaks of both.
Now for this he gives a reason (v. 25), which plainly refers to this promise, that they should not need to ask questions: "These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs, in such a way as you have thought not so plain and intelligible as you could have wished, but the time cometh when I shall show you plainly, as plainly as you can desire, of the Father, so that you shall not need to ask questions.'
Jhn 16:28-33
Two things Christ here comforts his disciples with:-
These words, and needest not that any man should ask thee, may bespeak either,
