8 And G2532 when he is come, G2064 he G1565 will reprove G1651 the world G2889 of G4012 sin, G266 and G2532 of G4012 righteousness, G1343 and G2532 of G4012 judgment: G2920
Which G5101 of G1537 you G5216 convinceth G1651 me G3165 of G4012 sin? G266 And G1161 if G1487 I say G3004 the truth, G225 why G1302 do G4100 ye G5210 not G3756 believe G4100 me? G3427
To execute G4160 judgment G2920 upon G2596 all, G3956 and G2532 to convince G1827 all G3956 that are ungodly G765 among them G846 of G4012 all G3956 their G846 ungodly G763 deeds G2041 which G3739 they have ungodly committed, G764 and G2532 of G4012 all G3956 their hard G4642 speeches which G3739 ungodly G765 sinners G268 have spoken G2980 against G2596 him. G846
And I will pour H8210 upon the house H1004 of David, H1732 and upon the inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem, H3389 the spirit H7307 of grace H2580 and of supplications: H8469 and they shall look H5027 upon me whom they have pierced, H1856 and they shall mourn H4553 for him, as one mourneth H5594 for his only H3173 son, and shall be in bitterness H4843 for him, as one that is in bitterness H4843 for his firstborn. H1060
Now G1161 when they heard G191 this, they were pricked G2660 in their heart, G2588 and G5037 said G2036 unto G4314 Peter G4074 and G2532 to the rest G3062 of the apostles, G652 Men G435 and brethren, G80 what G5101 shall we do? G4160
Then G1161 he called G154 for a light, G5457 and sprang in, G1530 and G2532 came G1096 trembling, G1790 and fell down before G4363 Paul G3972 and G2532 Silas, G4609 And G2532 brought G4254 them G846 out, G1854 and said, G5346 Sirs, G2962 what G5101 must G1163 I G3165 do G4160 to G2443 be saved? G4982
And G1161 they which heard G191 it, G2532 being convicted G1651 by G5259 their own conscience, G4893 went out G1831 one by one, G1527 beginning G756 at G575 the eldest, G4245 even unto G2193 the last: G2078 and G2532 Jesus G2424 was left G2641 alone, G3441 and G2532 the woman G1135 standing G2476 in G1722 the midst. Commentary on John 16 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 16
Among other glorious things God hath spoken of himself this is one, I wound, and I heal, Deu. 32:39. Christ's discourse in this chapter, which continues and concludes his farewell sermon to his disciples, does so.
Jhn 16:1-6
Christ dealt faithfully with his disciples when he sent them forth on his errands, for he told them the worst of it, that they might sit down and count the cost. He had told them in the chapter before to expect the world's hatred; now here in these verses,
Jhn 16:7-15
As it was usual with the Old Testament prophets to comfort the church in its calamities with the promise of the Messiah (Isa. 9:6; Mic. 5:2; Zec. 3:8); so, the Messiah being come, the promise of the Spirit was the great cordial, and is still.
Three things we have here concerning the Comforter's coming:-
Jhn 16:16-22
Our Lord Jesus, for the comfort of his sorrowful disciples, here promises that he would visit them again.
Jhn 16:23-27
An answer to their askings is here promised, for their further comfort. Now there are two ways of asking: asking by way of enquiry, which is the asking of the ignorant; and asking by way of request, which is the asking of the indigent. Christ here speaks of both.
Now for this he gives a reason (v. 25), which plainly refers to this promise, that they should not need to ask questions: "These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs, in such a way as you have thought not so plain and intelligible as you could have wished, but the time cometh when I shall show you plainly, as plainly as you can desire, of the Father, so that you shall not need to ask questions.'
Jhn 16:28-33
Two things Christ here comforts his disciples with:-
These words, and needest not that any man should ask thee, may bespeak either,
