23 Jesus G2424 answered G611 him, G846 If G1487 I have spoken G2980 evil, G2560 bear witness G3140 of G4012 the evil: G2556 but G1161 if G1487 well, G2573 why G5101 smitest G1194 thou me? G3165
And G1161 the high priest G749 Ananias G367 commanded G2004 them that stood by G3936 him G846 to smite G5180 him G846 on the mouth. G4750 Then G5119 said G2036 Paul G3972 unto G4314 him, G846 God G2316 shall G3195 smite G5180 thee, G4571 thou whited G2867 wall: G5109 for G2532 sittest G2521 thou G4771 to judge G2919 me G3165 after G2596 the law, G3551 and G2532 commandest G2753 me G3165 to be smitten G5180 contrary to the law? G3891 And G1161 they that stood by G3936 said, G2036 Revilest thou G3058 God's G2316 high priest? G749 Then G5037 said G5346 Paul, G3972 I wist G1492 not, G3756 brethren, G80 that G3754 he was G2076 the high priest: G749 for G1063 it is written, G1125 Thou shalt G2046 not G3756 speak G2046 evil G2560 of the ruler G758 of thy G4675 people. G2992
For G1063 what G4169 glory G2811 is it, if, G1487 when G2532 ye be buffeted G2852 for your faults, G264 ye shall take it patiently? G5278 but G235 if, G1487 when ye do well, G15 and G2532 suffer G3958 for it, ye take it patiently, G5278 this G5124 is acceptable G5485 with G3844 God. G2316 For G1063 even G1519 hereunto G5124 were ye called: G2564 because G3754 Christ G5547 also G2532 suffered G3958 for G5228 us, G2257 leaving G5277 us G2254 an example, G5261 that G2443 ye should follow G1872 his G846 steps: G2487 Who G3739 did G4160 no G3756 sin, G266 neither G3761 was guile G1388 found G2147 in G1722 his G846 mouth: G4750 Who, G3739 when he was reviled, G3058 reviled G486 not G3756 again; G486 when he suffered, G3958 he threatened G546 not; G3756 but G1161 committed G3860 himself to him that judgeth G2919 righteously: G1346

Commentary on John 18 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 18
Hitherto this evangelist has recorded little of the history of Christ, only so far as was requisite to introduce his discourses; but now that the time drew nigh that Jesus must die he is very particular in relating the circumstances of his sufferings, and some which the others had omitted, especially his sayings. So far were his followers from being ashamed of his cross, or endeavouring to conceal it, that this was what, both by word and writing, they were most industrious to proclaim, and gloried in it. This chapter relates,
Jhn 18:1-12
The hour was now come that the captain of our salvation, who was to be made perfect by sufferings, should engage the enemy. We have here his entrance upon the encounter. The day of recompence is in his heart, and the year of his redeemed is come, and his own arm works the salvation, for he has no second. Let us turn aside now, and see this great sight.
Jhn 18:13-27
We have here an account of Christ's arraignment before the high priest, and some circumstances that occurred therein which were omitted by the other evangelists; and Peter's denying him, which the other evangelists had given the story of entire by itself, is interwoven with the other passages. The crime laid to his charge having relation to religion, the judges of the spiritual court took it to fall directly under their cognizance. Both Jews and Gentiles seized him, and so both Jews and Gentiles tried and condemned him, for he died for the sins of both. Let us go over the story in order.
Jhn 18:28-40
We have here an account of Christ's arraignment before Pilate, the Roman governor, in the praetorium (a Latin word made Greek), the praetor's house, or hall of judgment; thither they hurried him, to get him condemned in the Roman court, and executed by the Roman power. Being resolved on his death, they took this course,
