35 Pilate G4091 answered, G611 G3385 Am G1510 I G1473 a Jew? G2453 Thine own G4674 nation G1484 and G2532 the chief priests G749 have delivered G3860 thee G4571 unto me: G1698 what G5101 hast thou done? G4160
Be it H1934 known H3046 unto the king, H4430 that the Jews H3062 which H1768 came up H5559 from H4481 thee H3890 to us H5922 are come H858 unto Jerusalem, H3390 building H1124 the rebellious H4779 and the bad H873 city, H7149 and have set up H3635 H3635 the walls H7792 thereof, and joined H2338 the foundations. H787
And he spake H559 before H6440 his brethren H251 and the army H2428 of Samaria, H8111 and said, H559 What do H6213 these feeble H537 Jews? H3064 will they fortify H5800 themselves? will they sacrifice? H2076 will they make an end H3615 in a day? H3117 will they revive H2421 the stones H68 out of the heaps H6194 of the rubbish H6083 which are burned? H8313
Then G3767 led they G71 Jesus G2424 from G575 Caiaphas G2533 unto G1519 the hall of judgment: G4232 and G1161 it was G2258 early; G4405 and G2532 they themselves G846 went G1525 not G3756 into G1519 the judgment hall, G4232 lest G3363 they should be defiled; G3392 but G235 that G2443 they might eat G5315 the passover. G3957
When G3753 the chief priests G749 therefore G3767 and G2532 officers G5257 saw G1492 him, G846 they cried out, G2905 saying, G3004 Crucify G4717 him, crucify G4717 him. Pilate G4091 saith G3004 unto them, G846 Take G2983 ye G5210 him, G846 and G2532 crucify G4717 him: for G1063 I G1473 find G2147 no G3756 fault G156 in G1722 him. G846
Jesus G2424 answered, G611 Thou couldest have G2192 no G3756 power G1849 at all against G3762 G2596 me, G1700 except G1508 it were G2258 given G1325 thee G4671 from above: G509 therefore G5124 G1223 he that delivered G3860 me G3165 unto thee G4671 hath G2192 the greater G3187 sin. G266
The God G2316 of Abraham, G11 and G2532 of Isaac, G2464 and G2532 of Jacob, G2384 the God G2316 of our G2257 fathers, G3962 hath glorified G1392 his G846 Son G3816 Jesus; G2424 whom G3739 ye G5210 delivered up, G3860 and G2532 denied G720 him G846 in G2596 the presence G4383 of Pilate, G4091 when he was determined G2919 to let G630 him G1565 go. G630
And G1161 when Paul G3972 was now about G3195 to open G455 his mouth, G4750 Gallio G1058 said G2036 unto G4314 the Jews, G2453 If G1487 G3303 G3767 it were G2258 a G5100 matter of wrong G92 or G2228 wicked G4190 lewdness, G4467 O G5599 ye Jews, G2453 reason G2596 G3056 would G302 that I should bear G430 with you: G5216 But G1161 if G1487 it be G2076 a question G2213 of G4012 words G3056 and G2532 names, G3686 and G2532 of G2596 your G5209 law, G3551 look ye G3700 G846 to it; for G1063 I G1473 will be G1014 G1511 no G3756 judge G2923 of such G5130 matters. And G2532 he drave G556 them G846 from G575 the judgment seat. G968
Art G1488 not G3756 thou G4771 G686 that Egyptian, G124 which before G4253 these G5130 days G2250 madest an uproar, G387 and G2532 leddest out G1806 into G1519 the wilderness G2048 four thousand G5070 men G435 that were murderers? G4607
And G1161 they gave G191 him G846 audience G191 unto G891 this G5127 word, G3056 and G2532 then lifted up G1869 their G846 voices, G5456 and said, G3004 Away with G142 such G5108 a fellow from G575 the earth: G1093 for G1063 it is G2520 not G3756 fit G2520 that he G846 should live. G2198 And G1161 as they G846 cried out, G2905 and G2532 cast off G4495 their clothes, G2440 and G2532 threw G906 dust G2868 into G1519 the air, G109 The chief captain G5506 commanded G2753 him G846 to be brought G71 into G1519 the castle, G3925 and bade G2036 that he G846 should be examined G426 by scourging; G3148 that G2443 he might know G1921 wherefore G1223 G3739 G156 they cried G2019 so G3779 against G2019 him. G846
Whom G3739 I perceived G2147 to be accused G1458 of G4012 questions G2213 of their G846 law, G3551 but G1161 to have G2192 nothing G3367 laid to his charge G1462 worthy G514 of death G2288 or G2228 of bonds. G1199
But G1161 had G2192 certain G5100 questions G2213 against G4314 him G846 of G4012 their own G2398 superstition, G1175 and G2532 of G4012 one G5100 Jesus, G2424 which was dead, G2348 whom G3739 Paul G3972 affirmed G5335 to be alive. G2198 And G1161 because I G1473 doubted G639 of G1519 such G5127 manner G4012 of questions, G2214 I asked G3004 him whether G1487 he would G1014 go G4198 to G1519 Jerusalem, G2419 and there G2546 be judged G2919 of G4012 these matters. Commentary on John 18 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 18
Hitherto this evangelist has recorded little of the history of Christ, only so far as was requisite to introduce his discourses; but now that the time drew nigh that Jesus must die he is very particular in relating the circumstances of his sufferings, and some which the others had omitted, especially his sayings. So far were his followers from being ashamed of his cross, or endeavouring to conceal it, that this was what, both by word and writing, they were most industrious to proclaim, and gloried in it. This chapter relates,
Jhn 18:1-12
The hour was now come that the captain of our salvation, who was to be made perfect by sufferings, should engage the enemy. We have here his entrance upon the encounter. The day of recompence is in his heart, and the year of his redeemed is come, and his own arm works the salvation, for he has no second. Let us turn aside now, and see this great sight.
Jhn 18:13-27
We have here an account of Christ's arraignment before the high priest, and some circumstances that occurred therein which were omitted by the other evangelists; and Peter's denying him, which the other evangelists had given the story of entire by itself, is interwoven with the other passages. The crime laid to his charge having relation to religion, the judges of the spiritual court took it to fall directly under their cognizance. Both Jews and Gentiles seized him, and so both Jews and Gentiles tried and condemned him, for he died for the sins of both. Let us go over the story in order.
Jhn 18:28-40
We have here an account of Christ's arraignment before Pilate, the Roman governor, in the praetorium (a Latin word made Greek), the praetor's house, or hall of judgment; thither they hurried him, to get him condemned in the Roman court, and executed by the Roman power. Being resolved on his death, they took this course,
