38 And G1161 after G3326 this G5023 Joseph G2501 of G575 Arimathaea, G707 being G5607 a disciple G3101 of Jesus, G2424 but G1161 secretly G2928 for G1223 fear G5401 of the Jews, G2453 besought G2065 Pilate G4091 that G2443 he might take away G142 the body G4983 of Jesus: G2424 and G2532 Pilate G4091 gave him leave. G2010 He came G2064 therefore, G3767 and G2532 took G142 the body G4983 of Jesus. G2424
When G1161 the even G3798 was come, G1096 there came G2064 a rich G4145 man G444 of G575 Arimathaea, G707 named G5122 Joseph, G2501 who G3739 also G2532 himself G846 was G3100 Jesus' G2424 disciple: G3100 He G3778 went G4334 to Pilate, G4091 and begged G154 the body G4983 of Jesus. G2424 Then G5119 Pilate G4091 commanded G2753 the body G4983 to be delivered. G591 And G2532 when Joseph G2501 had taken G2983 the body, G4983 he wrapped G1794 it G846 in a clean G2513 linen cloth, G4616 And G2532 laid G5087 it G846 in G1722 his own G846 new G2537 tomb, G3419 which G3739 he had hewn out G2998 in G1722 the rock: G4073 and G2532 he rolled G4351 a great G3173 stone G3037 to the door G2374 of the sepulchre, G3419 and departed. G565 And G1161 there G1563 was G2258 Mary G3137 Magdalene, G3094 and G2532 the other G243 Mary, G3137 sitting G2521 over against G561 the sepulchre. G5028
And G2532 now G2235 when the even G3798 was come, G1096 because G1893 it was G2258 the preparation, G3904 that G3603 is, G2076 the day before the sabbath, G4315 Joseph G2501 of G575 Arimathaea, G707 an honourable G2158 counsellor, G1010 which G3739 also G2532 G846 waited G4327 for G2258 the kingdom G932 of God, G2316 came, G2064 and went in G1525 boldly G5111 unto G4314 Pilate, G4091 and G2532 craved G154 the body G4983 of Jesus. G2424 And G1161 Pilate G4091 marvelled G2296 if G1487 he were G2348 already G2235 dead: G2348 and G2532 calling G4341 unto him the centurion, G2760 he asked G1905 him G846 whether G1487 he had been G599 any while G3819 dead. G599 And G2532 when he knew G1097 it of G575 the centurion, G2760 he gave G1433 the body G4983 to Joseph. G2501 And G2532 he bought G59 fine linen, G4616 and G2532 took him down, G2507 and wrapped G1750 him G846 in the linen, G4616 and G2532 laid G2698 him G846 in G1722 a sepulchre G3419 which G3739 was G2258 hewn G2998 out of G1537 a rock, G4073 and G2532 rolled G4351 a stone G3037 unto G1909 the door G2374 of the sepulchre. G3419 And G1161 Mary G3137 Magdalene G3094 and G2532 Mary G3137 the mother of Joses G2500 beheld G2334 where G4226 he was laid. G5087
And, G2532 behold, G2400 there was a man G435 named G3686 Joseph, G2501 a counsellor; G1010 and he was a good G5225 G18 man, G435 and G2532 a just: G1342 (The same G3778 had G4784 not G3756 consented G4784 G2258 to the counsel G1012 and G2532 deed G4234 of them;) G846 he was of G575 Arimathaea, G707 a city G4172 of the Jews: G2453 G2532 who G3739 also G2532 himself G846 waited for G4327 the kingdom G932 of God. G2316 This G3778 man went G4334 unto Pilate, G4091 and begged G154 the body G4983 of Jesus. G2424 And G2532 he took G2507 it G846 down, G2507 and wrapped G1794 it G846 in linen, G4616 and G2532 laid G5087 it G846 in G1722 a sepulchre G3418 that was hewn in stone, G2991 wherein G3757 never G3756 man G3764 before G3762 was G2258 laid. G2749 And G2532 that day G2250 was G2258 the preparation, G3904 and G2532 the sabbath G4521 drew on. G2020 And G1161 the women G1135 also, G2532 which G3748 came G2258 G4905 with him G846 from G1537 Galilee, G1056 followed after, G2628 and beheld G2300 the sepulchre, G3419 and G2532 how G5613 his G846 body G4983 was laid. G5087 And they returned, G5290 and G1161 prepared G2090 spices G759 and G2532 ointments; G3464 and G2532 rested G2270 G3303 the sabbath day G4521 according G2596 to the commandment. G1785

Commentary on John 19 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 19
Though in the history hitherto this evangelist seems industriously to have declined the recording of such passages as had been related by the other evangelists, yet, when he comes to the sufferings and death of Christ, instead of passing them over, as one ashamed of his Master's chain and cross, and looking upon them as the blemishes of his story, he repeats what had been before related, with considerable enlargements, as one that desired to know nothing but Christ and him crucified, to glory in nothing save in the cross of Christ. In the story of this chapter we have,
O that in meditating on these things we may experimentally know the power of Christ's death, and the fellowship of his sufferings!
Jhn 19:1-15
Here is a further account of the unfair trial which they gave to our Lord Jesus. The prosecutors carrying it on with great confusion among the people, and the judge with great confusion in his own breast, between both the narrative is such as is not easily reduced to method; we must therefore take the parts of it as they lie.
Jhn 19:16-18
We have here sentence of death passed upon our Lord Jesus, and execution done soon after. A mighty struggle Pilate had had within him between his convictions and his corruptions; but at length his convictions yielded, and his corruptions prevailed, the fear of man having a greater power over him than the fear of God.
And now let us pause awhile, and with an eye of faith look upon Jesus. Was ever sorrow like unto his sorrow? See him who was clothed with glory stripped of it all, and clothed with shame-him who was the praise of angels made a reproach of men-him who had been with eternal delight and joy in the bosom of his Father now in the extremities of pain and agony. See him bleeding, see him struggling, see him dying, see him and love him, love him and live to him, and study what we shall render.
Jhn 19:19-30
Here are some remarkable circumstances of Christ's dying more fully related than before, which those will take special notice of who covet to know Christ and him crucified.
Jhn 19:31-37
This passage concerning the piercing of Christ's side after his death is recorded only by this evangelist.
Jhn 19:38-42
We have here an account of the burial of the blessed body of our Lord Jesus. The solemn funerals of great men are usually looked at with curiosity; the mournful funerals of dear friends are attended with concern. Come and see an extraordinary funeral; never was the like! Come and see a burial that conquered the grave, and buried it, a burial that beautified the grave and softened it for all believers. Let us turn aside now, and see this great sight. Here is,
Thus without pomp or solemnity is the body of Jesus laid in the cold and silent grave. Here lies our surety under arrest for our debts, so that if he be released his discharge will be ours. Here is the Sun of righteousness set for awhile, to rise again in greater glory, and set no more. Here lies a seeming captive to death, but a real conqueror over death; for here lies death itself slain, and the grave conquered. Thanks be to God, who giveth us the victory.
