9 And G2532 went G1525 again G3825 into G1519 the judgment hall, G4232 and G2532 saith G3004 unto Jesus, G2424 Whence G4159 art G1488 thou? G4771 But G1161 Jesus G2424 gave G1325 him G846 no G3756 answer. G612
Then G3767 Pilate G4091 entered G1525 into G1519 the judgment hall G4232 again, G3825 and G2532 called G5455 Jesus, G2424 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 Art G1488 thou G4771 the King G935 of the Jews? G2453
Then the woman H802 came H935 and told H559 her husband, H376 saying, H559 A man H376 of God H430 came H935 unto me, and his countenance H4758 was like the countenance H4758 of an angel H4397 of God, H430 very H3966 terrible: H3372 but I asked H7592 him not whence he was, neither told H5046 he me his name: H8034
But I, as a deaf H2795 man, heard H8085 not; and I was as a dumb man H483 that openeth H6605 not his mouth. H6310 Thus I was as a man H376 that heareth H8085 not, and in whose mouth H6310 are no reproofs. H8433 For in thee, O LORD, H3068 do I hope: H3176 thou wilt hear, H6030 O Lord H136 my God. H430
He was oppressed, H5065 and he was afflicted, H6031 yet he opened H6605 not his mouth: H6310 he is brought H2986 as a lamb H7716 to the slaughter, H2874 and as a sheep H7353 before H6440 her shearers H1494 is dumb, H481 so he openeth H6605 not his mouth. H6310
But G1161 Jesus G2424 held his peace. G4623 And G2532 the high priest G749 answered G611 and said G2036 unto him, G846 I adjure G1844 thee G4571 by G2596 the living G2198 God, G2316 that G2443 thou tell G2036 us G2254 whether G1487 thou G4771 be G1488 the Christ, G5547 the Son G5207 of God. G2316
And G2532 when G1722 he G846 was accused G2723 of G5259 the chief priests G749 and G2532 elders, G4245 he answered G611 nothing. G3762 Then G5119 said G3004 Pilate G4091 unto him, G846 Hearest thou G191 not G3756 how many things G4214 they witness against G2649 thee? G4675 And G2532 he answered G3756 G611 him G846 to G4314 never G3761 a G1520 word; G4487 insomuch G5620 that the governor G2232 marvelled G2296 greatly. G3029
And G2532 the chief priests G749 accused G2723 him G846 of many things: G4183 but G1161 he G846 answered G611 nothing. G3762 And G1161 Pilate G4091 asked G1905 him G846 again, G3825 saying, G3004 Answerest thou G611 nothing? G3756 G3762 behold G2396 how many things G4214 they witness G2649 against thee. G4675 But G1161 Jesus G2424 yet G3765 answered G611 nothing; G3762 so G5620 that Pilate G4091 marvelled. G2296
Jesus G2424 answered G611 and G2532 said G2036 unto them, G846 Though G2579 I G1473 bear record G3140 of G4012 myself, G1683 yet my G3450 record G3141 is G2076 true: G227 for G3754 I know G1492 whence G4159 I came, G2064 and G2532 whither G4226 I go; G5217 but G1161 ye G5210 cannot G3756 tell G1492 whence G4159 I come, G2064 and G2532 whither G4226 I go. G5217
We G2249 know G1492 that G3754 God G2316 spake G2980 unto Moses: G3475 as for this G1161 G5126 fellow, we know G1492 not G3756 from whence G4159 he is. G2076 The man G444 answered G611 and G2532 said G2036 unto them, G846 Why G1063 herein G1722 G5129 is G2076 a marvellous thing, G2298 that G3754 ye G5210 know G1492 not G3756 from whence G4159 he is, G2076 and G2532 yet he hath opened G455 mine G3450 eyes. G3788
Pilate G4091 therefore G3767 said G2036 unto him, G846 Art G1488 thou G4771 a king G935 then? G3766 Jesus G2424 answered, G611 Thou G4771 sayest G3004 that G3754 I G1473 am G1510 a king. G935 To G1519 this G5124 end was G1080 I G1473 born, G1080 and G2532 for G1519 this G5124 cause came I G2064 into G1519 the world, G2889 that G2443 I should bear witness G3140 unto the truth. G225 Every one G3956 that is G5607 of G1537 the truth G225 heareth G191 my G3450 voice. G5456
G1161 The place G4042 of the scripture G1124 which G3739 he read G314 was G2258 this, G3778 He was led G71 as G5613 a sheep G4263 to G1909 the slaughter; G4967 and G2532 like G5613 a lamb G286 dumb G880 before G1726 his G846 shearer, G2751 so G3779 opened he G455 not G3756 his G846 mouth: G4750 In G1722 his G846 humiliation G5014 his G846 judgment G2920 was taken away: G142 and G1161 who G5101 shall declare G1334 his G846 generation? G1074 for G3754 his G846 life G2222 is taken G142 from G575 the earth. G1093

Commentary on John 19 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 19
Though in the history hitherto this evangelist seems industriously to have declined the recording of such passages as had been related by the other evangelists, yet, when he comes to the sufferings and death of Christ, instead of passing them over, as one ashamed of his Master's chain and cross, and looking upon them as the blemishes of his story, he repeats what had been before related, with considerable enlargements, as one that desired to know nothing but Christ and him crucified, to glory in nothing save in the cross of Christ. In the story of this chapter we have,
O that in meditating on these things we may experimentally know the power of Christ's death, and the fellowship of his sufferings!
Jhn 19:1-15
Here is a further account of the unfair trial which they gave to our Lord Jesus. The prosecutors carrying it on with great confusion among the people, and the judge with great confusion in his own breast, between both the narrative is such as is not easily reduced to method; we must therefore take the parts of it as they lie.
Jhn 19:16-18
We have here sentence of death passed upon our Lord Jesus, and execution done soon after. A mighty struggle Pilate had had within him between his convictions and his corruptions; but at length his convictions yielded, and his corruptions prevailed, the fear of man having a greater power over him than the fear of God.
And now let us pause awhile, and with an eye of faith look upon Jesus. Was ever sorrow like unto his sorrow? See him who was clothed with glory stripped of it all, and clothed with shame-him who was the praise of angels made a reproach of men-him who had been with eternal delight and joy in the bosom of his Father now in the extremities of pain and agony. See him bleeding, see him struggling, see him dying, see him and love him, love him and live to him, and study what we shall render.
Jhn 19:19-30
Here are some remarkable circumstances of Christ's dying more fully related than before, which those will take special notice of who covet to know Christ and him crucified.
Jhn 19:31-37
This passage concerning the piercing of Christ's side after his death is recorded only by this evangelist.
Jhn 19:38-42
We have here an account of the burial of the blessed body of our Lord Jesus. The solemn funerals of great men are usually looked at with curiosity; the mournful funerals of dear friends are attended with concern. Come and see an extraordinary funeral; never was the like! Come and see a burial that conquered the grave, and buried it, a burial that beautified the grave and softened it for all believers. Let us turn aside now, and see this great sight. Here is,
Thus without pomp or solemnity is the body of Jesus laid in the cold and silent grave. Here lies our surety under arrest for our debts, so that if he be released his discharge will be ours. Here is the Sun of righteousness set for awhile, to rise again in greater glory, and set no more. Here lies a seeming captive to death, but a real conqueror over death; for here lies death itself slain, and the grave conquered. Thanks be to God, who giveth us the victory.
