19 The woman G1135 saith G3004 unto him, G846 Sir, G2962 I perceive G2334 that G3754 thou G4771 art G1488 a prophet. G4396
Now G1161 when the Pharisee G5330 which G3588 had bidden G2564 him G846 saw G1492 it, he spake G2036 within G1722 himself, G1438 saying, G3004 This man, G3778 if G1487 he were G2258 a prophet, G4396 G302 would have known G1097 who G5101 and G2532 what manner G4217 of woman G1135 this is that G3748 toucheth G680 him: G846 for G3754 she is G2076 a sinner. G268
They say G3004 unto the blind man G5185 again, G3825 What G5101 sayest G3004 thou G4771 of G4012 him, G846 that G3754 he hath opened G455 thine G4675 eyes? G3788 He said, G2036 G3754 G1161 He is G2076 a prophet. G4396
And G1161 the multitude G3793 said, G3004 This G3778 is G2076 Jesus G2424 the prophet G4396 of G575 Nazareth G3478 of Galilee. G1056
And G2532 he said G2036 unto them, G846 What things? G4169 And G1161 they said G2036 unto him, G846 Concerning G4012 Jesus G2424 of Nazareth, G3480 which G3739 was G1096 a prophet G4396 mighty G1415 in G1722 G435 deed G2041 and G2532 word G3056 before G1726 God G2316 and G2532 all G3956 the people: G2992
Many G4183 of G1537 the people G3793 therefore, G3767 when they heard G191 this saying, G3056 said, G3004 Of a truth G230 this G3778 is G2076 the Prophet. G4396
And he said H559 unto him, Went H1980 not mine heart H3820 with thee, when the man H376 turned H2015 again from his chariot H4818 to meet H7125 thee? Is it a time H6256 to receive H3947 money, H3701 and to receive H3947 garments, H899 and oliveyards, H2132 and vineyards, H3754 and sheep, H6629 and oxen, H1241 and menservants, H5650 and maidservants? H8198
Nathanael G3482 saith G3004 unto him, G846 Whence G4159 knowest thou G1097 me? G3165 Jesus G2424 answered G611 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 Before G4253 that Philip G5376 called G5455 thee, G4571 when thou wast G5607 under G5259 the fig tree, G4808 I saw G1492 thee. G4571 Nathanael G3482 answered G611 and G2532 saith G3004 unto him, G846 Rabbi, G4461 thou G4771 art G1488 the Son G5207 of God; G2316 thou G4771 art G1488 the King G935 of Israel. G2474
Come, G1205 see G1492 a man, G444 which G3739 told G2036 me G3427 all things G3956 that ever G3745 I did: G4160 is G2076 not G3385 this G3778 the Christ? G5547
But G1161 if G1437 all G3956 prophesy, G4395 and G1161 there come in G1525 one G5100 that believeth not, G571 or G2228 one unlearned, G2399 he is convinced G1651 of G5259 all, G3956 he is judged G350 of G5259 all: G3956 And G2532 thus G3779 are G1096 the secrets G2927 of his G846 heart G2588 made G1096 manifest; G5318 and G2532 so G3779 falling down G4098 on G1909 his face G4383 he will worship G4352 God, G2316 and report G518 that G3754 God G2316 is G2076 in G1722 you G5213 of a truth. Commentary on John 4 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 4
It was, more than any thing else, the glory of the land of Israel, that it was Emmanuel's land (Isa. 8:8), not only the place of his birth, but the scene of his preaching and miracles. This land in our Saviour's time was divided into three parts: Judea in the south, Galilee in the north, and Samaria lying between them. Now, in this chapter, we have Christ in each of these three parts of that land.
Jhn 4:1-3
We read of Christ's coming into Judea (ch. 3:22), after he had kept the feast at Jerusalem; and now he left Judea four months before harvest, as is said here (v. 35); so that it is computed that he staid in Judea about six months, to build upon the foundation John had laid there. We have no particular account of his sermons and miracles there, only in general, v. 1.
Jhn 4:4-26
We have here an account of the good Christ did in Samaria, when he passed through that country in his way to Galilee. The Samaritans, both in blood and religion, were mongrel Jews, the posterity of those colonies which the king of Assyria planted there after the captivity of the ten tribes, with whom the poor of the land that were left behind, and many other Jews afterwards, incorporated themselves. They worshipped the God of Israel only, to whom they erected a temple on mount Gerizim, in competition with that at Jerusalem. There was great enmity between them and the Jews; the Samaritans would not admit Christ, when they saw he was going to Jerusalem (Lu. 9:53); the Jews thought they could not give him a worse name than to say, He is a Samaritan. When the Jews were in prosperity, the Samaritans claimed kindred to them (Ezra 4:2), but, when the Jews were in distress, they were Medes and Persians; see Joseph. Antiq. 11.340-341; 12.257. We have here the remainder of the story of what happened when Christ was in Samaria, after the long conference he had with the woman.
