18 Therefore G1223 G5124 G3767 the Jews G2453 sought G2212 the more G3123 to kill G615 him, G846 because G3754 he G3089 not G3756 only G3440 had broken G3089 the sabbath, G4521 but G235 said G3004 also G2532 that God G2316 was his G2398 Father, G3962 making G4160 himself G1438 equal G2470 with God. G2316
The Jews G2453 answered G611 him, G846 saying, G3004 For G4012 a good G2570 work G2041 we stone G3034 thee G4571 not; G3756 but G235 for G4012 blasphemy; G988 and G2532 because G3754 that thou, G4771 being G5607 a man, G444 makest G4160 thyself G4572 God. G2316
And G2532 he shewed G1166 me G3427 a pure G2513 river G4215 of water G5204 of life, G2222 clear G2986 as G5613 crystal, G2930 proceeding G1607 out of G1537 the throne G2362 of God G2316 and G2532 of the Lamb. G721
Awake, H5782 O sword, H2719 against my shepherd, H7462 and against the man H1397 that is my fellow, H5997 saith H5002 the LORD H3068 of hosts: H6635 smite H5221 the shepherd, H7462 and the sheep H6629 shall be scattered: H6327 and I will turn H7725 mine hand H3027 upon the little ones. H6819
And G2532 there shall be G2071 no G3756 more G2089 G3956 curse: G2652 but G2532 the throne G2362 of God G2316 and G2532 of the Lamb G721 shall be G2071 in G1722 it; G846 and G2532 his G846 servants G1401 shall serve G3000 him: G846
And G2532 I saw G1492 no G3756 temple G3485 therein: G1722 G846 for G1063 the Lord G2962 God G2316 Almighty G3841 and G2532 the Lamb G721 are G2076 the temple G3485 of it. G846 And G2532 the city G4172 had G2192 no G3756 need G5532 of the sun, G2246 neither G3761 of the moon, G4582 to G2443 shine G5316 in G1722 it: G846 for G1063 the glory G1391 of God G2316 did lighten G5461 it, G846 and G2532 the Lamb G721 is the light G3088 thereof. G846
Jesus G2424 answered G611 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 If G1437 a man G5100 love G25 me, G3165 he will keep G5083 my G3450 words: G3056 and G2532 my G3450 Father G3962 will love G25 him, G846 and G2532 we will come G2064 unto G4314 him, G846 and G2532 make G4160 our abode G3438 with G3844 him. G846
Jesus G2424 answered, G611 If G1437 I G1473 honour G1392 myself, G1683 my G3450 honour G1391 is G2076 nothing: G3762 it is G2076 my G3450 Father G3962 that honoureth G1392 me; G3165 of whom G3739 ye G5210 say, G3004 that G3754 he is G2076 your G5216 God: G2316
Moses G3475 therefore G1223 G5124 gave G1325 unto you G5213 circumcision; G4061 (not G3756 because G3754 it is G2076 of G1537 Moses, G3475 but G235 of G1537 the fathers;) G3962 and G2532 ye G4059 on G1722 the sabbath day G4521 circumcise G4059 a man. G444 If G1487 a man G444 on G1722 the sabbath day G4521 receive G2983 circumcision, G4061 that G3363 the law G3551 of Moses G3475 should G3089 not G3363 be broken; G3089 are ye angry G5520 at me, G1698 because G3754 I have made G4160 a man G444 every whit G3650 whole G5199 on G1722 the sabbath day? G4521
Did G1325 not G3756 Moses G3475 give G1325 you G5213 the law, G3551 and G2532 yet none G3762 of G1537 you G5216 keepeth G4160 the law? G3551 Why G5101 go ye about G2212 to kill G615 me? G3165
Or G2228 have ye G314 not G3756 read G314 in G1722 the law, G3551 how that G3754 on the sabbath days G4521 the priests G2409 in G1722 the temple G2411 profane G953 the sabbath, G4521 and G2532 are G1526 blameless? G338
Jesus G2424 saith G3004 unto him, G846 Have I been G1510 so long G5118 time G5550 with G3326 you, G5216 and yet G2532 hast thou G1097 not G3756 known G1097 me, G3165 Philip? G5376 he that hath seen G3708 me G1691 hath seen G3708 the Father; G3962 and G2532 how G4459 sayest G3004 thou G4771 then, Shew G1166 us G2254 the Father? G3962

Commentary on John 5 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 5
We have in the gospels a faithful record of all that Jesus began both to do and to teach, Acts 1:1. These two are interwoven, because what he taught explained what he did, and what he did confirmed what he taught. Accordingly, we have in this chapter a miracle and a sermon.
Jhn 5:1-16
This miraculous cure is not recorded by any other of the evangelists, who confine themselves mostly to the miracles wrought in Galilee, but John relates those wrought at Jerusalem. Concerning this observe,
Now this is all the account we have of this standing miracle; it is uncertain when it began and when it ceased. Some conjecture it began when Eliashib the high priest began the building of the wall about Jerusalem, and sanctified it with prayer; and that God testified his acceptance by putting this virtue into the adjoining pool. Some think it began now lately at Christ's birth; nay, others at his baptism. Dr. Lightfoot, finding in Josephus, Antiq. 15.121-122, mention of a great earthquake in the seventh year of Herod, thirty years before Christ's birth, supposed, since there used to be earthquakes at the descent of angels, that then the angel first descended to stir this water. Some think it ceased with this miracle, others at Christ's death; however, it is certain it had a gracious signification.
Jhn 5:17-30
We have here Christ's discourse upon occasion of his being accused as a sabbath-breaker, and it seems to be his vindication of himself before the sanhedrim, when he was arraigned before them: whether on the same day, or two or three days after, does not appear; probably the same day. Observe,
Jhn 5:31-47
In these verses our Lord Jesus proves and confirms the commission he had produced, and makes it out that he was sent of God to be the Messiah.
