32 There is G2076 another G243 that beareth witness G3140 of G4012 me; G1700 and G2532 I know G1492 that G3754 the witness G3141 which G3739 he witnesseth G3140 of G4012 me G1700 is G2076 true. G227
And I G2504 knew G1492 him G846 not: G3756 but G235 he that sent G3992 me G3165 to baptize G907 with G1722 water, G5204 the same G1565 said G2036 unto me, G3427 Upon G1909 whom G3739 G302 thou shalt see G1492 the Spirit G4151 descending, G2597 and G2532 remaining G3306 on G1909 him, G846 the same G3778 is G2076 he which baptizeth G907 with G1722 the Holy G40 Ghost. G4151
But G1161 I G1473 have G2192 greater G3187 witness G3141 than that of John: G2491 for G1063 the works G2041 which G3739 the Father G3962 hath given G1325 me G3427 to G2443 finish, G5048 G846 the same G846 works G2041 that G3739 I G1473 do, G4160 bear witness G3140 of G4012 me, G1700 that G3754 the Father G3962 hath sent G649 me. G3165 And G2532 the Father G3962 himself, G846 which hath sent G3992 me, G3165 hath borne witness G3140 of G4012 me. G1700 Ye have G191 neither G3777 heard G191 his G846 voice G5456 at any time, G4455 nor G3777 seen G3708 his G846 shape. G1491
G2532 It is G1125 also G1161 written G1125 in G1722 your G5212 law, G3551 that G3754 the testimony G3141 of two G1417 men G444 is G2076 true. G227 I G1473 am G1510 one that bear witness G3140 of G4012 myself, G1683 and G2532 the Father G3962 that sent G3992 me G3165 beareth witness G3140 of G4012 me. G1700
Father, G3962 glorify G1392 thy G4675 name. G3686 Then G3767 came there G2064 a voice G5456 from G1537 heaven, G3772 saying, I have G1392 both G2532 glorified G1392 it, and G2532 will glorify G1392 it again. G3825 The people G3793 therefore, G3767 that stood by, G2476 and G2532 heard G191 it, said G3004 that it thundered: G1096 G1027 others G243 said, G3004 An angel G32 spake G2980 to him. G846 Jesus G2424 answered G611 and G2532 said, G2036 This G3778 voice G5456 came G1096 not G3756 because of G1223 me, G1691 but G235 for G1223 your sakes. G5209 G1223
And G2532 I know G1492 that G3754 his G846 commandment G1785 is G2076 life G2222 everlasting: G166 whatsoever G3739 I G1473 speak G2980 therefore, G3767 even as G2531 the Father G3962 said G2046 unto me, G3427 so G3779 I speak. G2980
This G3778 is G2076 he that came G2064 by G1223 water G5204 and G2532 blood, G129 even Jesus G2424 Christ; G5547 not G3756 by G1722 water G5204 only, G3440 but G235 by G1722 water G5204 and G2532 blood. G129 And G2532 it is G2076 the Spirit G4151 that beareth witness, G3140 because G3754 the Spirit G4151 is G2076 truth. G225 For G3754 there are G1526 three G5140 that bear record G3140 in G1722 heaven, G3772 the Father, G3962 the Word, G3056 and G2532 the Holy G40 Ghost: G4151 and G2532 these G3778 three G5140 are G1526 one. G1520 And G2532 there are G1526 three G5140 that bear witness G3140 in G1722 earth, G1093 the Spirit, G4151 and G2532 the water, G5204 and G2532 the blood: G129 and G2532 these three G5140 agree G1526 in G1519 one. G1520 If G1487 we receive G2983 the witness G3141 of men, G444 the witness G3141 of God G2316 is G2076 greater: G3187 for G3754 this G3778 is G2076 the witness G3141 of God G2316 which G3739 he hath testified G3140 of G4012 his G846 Son. G5207
And G2532 lo G2400 a voice G5456 from G1537 heaven, G3772 saying, G3004 This G3778 is G2076 my G3450 beloved G27 Son, G5207 in G1722 whom G3739 I am well pleased. G2106
While he G846 yet G2089 spake, G2980 behold, G2400 a bright G5460 cloud G3507 overshadowed G1982 them: G846 and G2532 behold G2400 a voice G5456 out of G1537 the cloud, G3507 which said, G3004 This G3778 is G2076 my G3450 beloved G27 Son, G5207 in G1722 whom G3739 I am well pleased; G2106 hear ye G191 him. G846
And G2532 the Holy G40 Ghost G4151 descended G2597 in a bodily G4984 shape G1491 like G5616 a dove G4058 upon G1909 him, G846 and G2532 a voice G5456 came G1096 from G1537 heaven, G3772 which said, G3004 Thou G4771 art G1488 my G3450 beloved G27 Son; G5207 in G1722 thee G4671 I am well pleased. Commentary on John 5 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 5
We have in the gospels a faithful record of all that Jesus began both to do and to teach, Acts 1:1. These two are interwoven, because what he taught explained what he did, and what he did confirmed what he taught. Accordingly, we have in this chapter a miracle and a sermon.
Jhn 5:1-16
This miraculous cure is not recorded by any other of the evangelists, who confine themselves mostly to the miracles wrought in Galilee, but John relates those wrought at Jerusalem. Concerning this observe,
Now this is all the account we have of this standing miracle; it is uncertain when it began and when it ceased. Some conjecture it began when Eliashib the high priest began the building of the wall about Jerusalem, and sanctified it with prayer; and that God testified his acceptance by putting this virtue into the adjoining pool. Some think it began now lately at Christ's birth; nay, others at his baptism. Dr. Lightfoot, finding in Josephus, Antiq. 15.121-122, mention of a great earthquake in the seventh year of Herod, thirty years before Christ's birth, supposed, since there used to be earthquakes at the descent of angels, that then the angel first descended to stir this water. Some think it ceased with this miracle, others at Christ's death; however, it is certain it had a gracious signification.
Jhn 5:17-30
We have here Christ's discourse upon occasion of his being accused as a sabbath-breaker, and it seems to be his vindication of himself before the sanhedrim, when he was arraigned before them: whether on the same day, or two or three days after, does not appear; probably the same day. Observe,
Jhn 5:31-47
In these verses our Lord Jesus proves and confirms the commission he had produced, and makes it out that he was sent of God to be the Messiah.
