59 Then G3767 took they up G142 stones G3037 to G2443 cast G906 at G1909 him: G846 but G1161 Jesus G2424 hid himself, G2928 and G2532 went G1831 out of G1537 the temple, G2411 going G1330 through G1223 the midst G3319 of them, G846 and G2532 so G3779 passed by. G3855
His disciples G3101 say G3004 unto him, G846 Master, G4461 the Jews G2453 of late G3568 sought G2212 to stone G3034 thee; G4571 and G2532 goest thou G5217 thither G1563 again? G3825
And he that blasphemeth H5344 the name H8034 of the LORD, H3068 he shall surely H4191 be put to death, H4191 and all the congregation H5712 shall certainly H7275 stone H7275 him: as well the stranger, H1616 as he that is born in the land, H249 when he blasphemeth H5344 the name H8034 of the LORD, shall be put to death. H4191
I G1473 and G2532 my Father G3962 are G2070 one. G1520 Then G3767 the Jews G2453 took up G941 stones G3037 again G3825 to G2443 stone G3034 him. G846 Jesus G2424 answered G611 them, G846 Many G4183 good G2570 works G2041 have I shewed G1166 you G5213 from G1537 my G3450 Father; G3962 for G1223 which G4169 of those G846 works G2041 do ye stone G3034 me? G3165 The Jews G2453 answered G611 him, G846 saying, G3004 For G4012 a good G2570 work G2041 we stone G3034 thee G4571 not; G3756 but G235 for G4012 blasphemy; G988 and G2532 because G3754 that thou, G4771 being G5607 a man, G444 makest G4160 thyself G4572 God. G2316
And they smote H5221 the men H582 that were at the door H6607 of the house H1004 with blindness, H5575 both small H6996 and great: H1419 so that they wearied H3811 themselves to find H4672 the door. H6607
And when they came down H3381 to him, Elisha H477 prayed H6419 unto the LORD, H3068 and said, H559 Smite H5221 this people, H1471 I pray thee, with blindness. H5575 And he smote H5221 them with blindness H5575 according to the word H1697 of Elisha. H477 And Elisha H477 said H559 unto them, This is not the way, H1870 neither is this H2090 the city: H5892 follow H3212 H310 me, and I will bring H3212 you to the man H376 whom ye seek. H1245 But he led H3212 them to Samaria. H8111 And it came to pass, when they were come H935 into Samaria, H8111 that Elisha H477 said, H559 LORD, H3068 open H6491 the eyes H5869 of these men, that they may see. H7200 And the LORD H3068 opened H6491 their eyes, H5869 and they saw; H7200 and, behold, they were in the midst H8432 of Samaria. H8111
And G2532 rose up, G450 and thrust G1544 him G846 out of G1854 the city, G4172 and G2532 led G71 him G846 unto G2193 the brow G3790 of the hill G3735 whereon G1909 G3739 their G846 city G4172 was built, G3618 that G1519 they might cast G2630 him G846 down headlong. G2630 But G1161 he G846 passing G1330 through G1223 the midst G3319 of them G846 went his way, G4198
And G1161 their G846 eyes G3788 were opened, G1272 and G2532 they knew G1921 him; G846 and G2532 he G846 vanished G1096 G855 out of G575 their sight. G846
And G1161 he that was healed G2390 wist G1492 not G3756 who G5101 it was: G2076 for G1063 Jesus G2424 had conveyed himself away, G1593 a multitude G3793 being G5607 in G1722 that place. G5117
Now G1161 Moses G3475 in G1722 the law G3551 commanded G1781 us, G2254 that such G5108 should be stoned: G3036 but G3767 what G5101 sayest G3004 thou? G4771 G1161 This G5124 they said, G3004 tempting G3985 him, G846 that G2443 they might have G2192 to accuse G2723 him. G846 But G1161 Jesus G2424 stooped G2955 down, G2736 and with his finger G1147 wrote G1125 on G1519 the ground, G1093 as though he heard G4364 them not. G3361
Therefore G3767 they sought G2212 again G3825 to take G4084 him: G846 but G2532 he escaped G1831 out of G1537 their G846 hand, G5495 And G2532 went away G565 again G3825 beyond G4008 Jordan G2446 into G1519 the place G5117 where G3699 John G2491 at first G4412 baptized; G907 G2258 and G2532 there G1563 he abode. G3306
Jesus G2424 therefore G3767 walked G4043 no more G3765 openly G3954 among G1722 the Jews; G2453 but G235 went G565 thence G1564 unto G1519 a country G5561 near G1451 to the wilderness, G2048 into G1519 a city G4172 called G3004 Ephraim, G2187 and there G2546 continued G1304 with G3326 his G846 disciples. G3101
Then G3767 said G2036 Pilate G4091 unto them, G846 Take G2983 ye G5210 him, G846 and G2532 judge G2919 him G846 according G2596 to your G5216 law. G3551 The Jews G2453 therefore G3767 said G2036 unto him, G846 It is G1832 not G3756 lawful G1832 for us G2254 to put G615 any man G3762 to death: G615
Then G1161 they cried out G2896 with a loud G3173 voice, G5456 and stopped G4912 their G846 ears, G3775 and G2532 ran G3729 upon G1909 him G846 with one accord, G3661
And G1161 when G3753 they were come up G305 out of G1537 the water, G5204 the Spirit G4151 of the Lord G2962 caught away G726 Philip, G5376 G2532 that the eunuch G2135 saw G1492 G3756 him G846 no more: G3765 and G1063 he went G4198 on his G846 way G3598 rejoicing. G5463 But G1161 Philip G5376 was found G2147 at G1519 Azotus: G108 and G2532 passing G1330 through he preached G2097 in all G3956 the cities, G4172 till G2193 he G846 came G2064 to G1519 Caesarea. Commentary on John 8 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 8
In this chapter we have,
Jhn 8:1-11
Though Christ was basely abused in the foregoing chapter, both by the rulers and by the people, yet here we have him still at Jerusalem, still in the temple. How often would he have gathered them! Observe,
Jhn 8:12-20
The rest of the chapter is taken up with debates between Christ and contradicting sinners, who cavilled at the most gracious words that proceeded out of his mouth. It is not certain whether these disputes were the same day that the adulteress was discharged; it is probable they were, for the evangelist mentions no other day, and takes notice (v. 2) how early Christ began that day's work. Though those Pharisees that accused the woman had absconded, yet there were other Pharisees (v. 13) to confront Christ, who had brass enough in their foreheads to keep them in countenance, though some of their party were put to such a shameful retreat; nay perhaps that made them the more industrious to pick quarrels with him, to retrieve, if possible, the reputation of their baffled party. In these verses we have,
This was the sum of the first conference between Christ and these carnal Jews, in the conclusion of which we are told how their tongues were let loose, and their hands tied.
Jhn 8:21-30
Christ here gives fair warning to the careless unbelieving Jews to consider what would be the consequence of their infidelity, that they might prevent it before it was too late; for he spoke words of terror as well as words of grace. Observe here,
Jhn 8:31-37
We have in these verses,
Jhn 8:38-47
Here Christ and the Jews are still at issue; he sets himself to convince and convert them, while they still set themselves to contradict and oppose him.
This is a high charge, and sounds very harsh and horrid, that any of the children of men, especially the church's children, should be called children of the devil, and therefore our Saviour fully proves it.
Jhn 8:48-50
Here is,
Jhn 8:51-59
In these verses we have,
