34 They answered G611 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 Thou G4771 wast G1080 altogether G3650 born G1080 in G1722 sins, G266 and G2532 dost thou G4771 teach G1321 us? G2248 And G2532 they cast G1544 him G846 out. G1854
These G5023 words spake G2036 his G846 parents, G1118 because G3754 they feared G5399 the Jews: G2453 for G1063 the Jews G2453 had agreed G4934 already, G2235 that G2443 if G1437 any man G5100 did confess G3670 that he G846 was Christ, G5547 he should be G1096 put out of the synagogue. G656
Hear H8085 the word H1697 of the LORD, H3068 ye that tremble H2730 at his word; H1697 Your brethren H251 that hated H8130 you, that cast you out H5077 for my name's H8034 sake, said, H559 Let the LORD H3068 be glorified: H3513 but he shall appear H7200 to your joy, H8057 and they shall be ashamed. H954
Ye G5210 do G4160 the deeds G2041 of your G5216 father. G3962 Then G3767 said they G2036 to him, G846 We G2249 be G1080 not G3756 born G1080 of G1537 fornication; G4202 we have G2192 one G1520 Father, G3962 even God. G2316
And G2532 some of G1537 the Pharisees G5330 which G3588 were G5607 with G3326 him G846 heard G191 these words, G5023 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 Are G3361 G2070 we G2249 blind G5185 also? G2532
In G1722 the name G3686 of our G2257 Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 when ye G5216 are gathered together, G4863 and G2532 my G1699 spirit, G4151 with G4862 the power G1411 of our G2257 Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 To deliver G3860 such an one G5108 unto Satan G4567 for G1519 the destruction G3639 of the flesh, G4561 that G2443 the spirit G4151 may be saved G4982 in G1722 the day G2250 of the Lord G2962 Jesus. G2424
We G2249 who are Jews G2453 by nature, G5449 and G2532 not G3756 sinners G268 of G1537 the Gentiles, G1484
Among G1722 whom G3739 also G2532 we G2249 all G3956 had our conversation G390 in times past G4218 in G1722 the lusts G1939 of our G2257 flesh, G4561 fulfilling G4160 the desires G2307 of the flesh G4561 and G2532 of the mind; G1271 and G2532 were G2258 by nature G5449 the children G5043 of wrath, G3709 even G2532 as G5613 others. G3062
Likewise, G3668 ye younger, G3501 submit yourselves G5293 unto the elder. G4245 Yea, G1161 all G3956 of you be subject G5293 one to another, G240 and be clothed G1463 with humility: G5012 for G3754 God G2316 resisteth G498 the proud, G5244 and G1161 giveth G1325 grace G5485 to the humble. G5011
I wrote G1125 unto the church: G1577 but G235 Diotrephes, G1361 who G3588 loveth to have the preeminence G5383 among them, G846 receiveth G1926 us G2248 not. G3756
And G2532 that no G3363 man G5100 might G1410 buy G59 or G2228 sell, G4453 save he G1508 that had G2192 the mark, G5480 or G2228 the name G3686 of the beast, G2342 or G2228 the number G706 of his G846 name. G3686
And they said, H559 Stand H5066 back. H1973 And they said H559 again, This one H259 fellow came in H935 to sojourn, H1481 and he will needs H8199 be a judge: H8199 now will we deal worse H7489 with thee, than with them. And they pressed H6484 sore H3966 upon the man, H376 even Lot, H3876 and came near H5066 to break H7665 the door. H1817
All G3956 that G3739 the Father G3962 giveth G1325 me G3427 shall come G2240 to G4314 me; G1691 and G2532 him that cometh G2064 to G4314 me G3165 I will G1544 in no wise G3364 cast G1544 out. G1854
Two G1417 men G444 went up G305 into G1519 the temple G2411 to pray; G4336 the one G1520 a Pharisee, G5330 and G2532 the other G2087 a publican. G5057 The Pharisee G5330 stood G2476 and prayed G4336 thus G5023 with G4314 himself, G1438 God, G2316 I thank G2168 thee, G4671 that G3754 I am G1510 not G3756 as G5618 other G3062 men G444 are, extortioners, G727 unjust, G94 adulterers, G3432 or G2228 even G2532 as G5613 this G3778 publican. G5057 I fast G3522 twice G1364 in the week, G4521 I give tithes G586 of all G3956 that G3745 I possess. G2932 And G2532 the publican, G5057 standing G2476 afar off, G3113 would G2309 not G3756 lift up G1869 so much as G3761 his eyes G3788 unto G1519 heaven, G3772 but G235 smote G5180 upon G1519 his G846 breast, G4738 saying, G3004 God G2316 be merciful G2433 to me G3427 a sinner. G268 I tell G3004 you, G5213 this man G3778 went down G2597 to G1519 his G846 house G3624 justified G1344 rather than G2228 the other: G1565 for G3754 every one G3956 that exalteth G5312 himself G1438 shall be abased; G5013 and G1161 he that humbleth G5013 himself G1438 shall be exalted. G5312
Then G1161 answered G611 one G5100 of the lawyers, G3544 and said G3004 unto him, G846 Master, G1320 thus G5023 saying G3004 thou reproachest G5195 us G2248 also. G2532
Blessed G3107 are ye, G2075 when G3752 men G444 shall hate G3404 you, G5209 and G2532 when G3752 they shall separate G873 you G5209 from their company, and G2532 shall reproach G3679 you, and G2532 cast out G1544 your G5216 name G3686 as G5613 evil, G4190 for the Son G5207 of man's G444 sake. G1752
And G1161 if G1437 he shall neglect to hear G3878 them, G846 tell G2036 it unto the church: G1577 but G1161 G2532 if G1437 he neglect to hear G3878 the church, G1577 let him be G2077 unto thee G4671 as G5618 an heathen man G1482 and G2532 a publican. G5057 Verily G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 Whatsoever G3745 G1437 ye shall bind G1210 on G1909 earth G1093 shall be G2071 bound G1210 in G1722 heaven: G3772 and G2532 whatsoever G3745 G1437 ye shall loose G3089 on G1909 earth G1093 shall be G2071 loosed G3089 in G1722 heaven. G3772
Which say, H559 Stand H7126 by thyself, come not near H5066 to me; for I am holier H6942 than thou. These are a smoke H6227 in my nose, H639 a fire H784 that burneth H3344 all the day. H3117
Cast out H1644 the scorner, H3887 and contention H4066 shall go out; H3318 yea, strife H1779 and reproach H7036 shall cease. H7673
He that reproveth H3256 a scorner H3887 getteth H3947 to himself shame: H7036 and he that rebuketh H3198 a wicked H7563 man getteth himself a blot. H3971 Reprove H3198 not a scorner, H3887 lest he hate H8130 thee: rebuke H3198 a wise man, H2450 and he will love H157 thee.
What is man, H582 that he should be clean? H2135 and he which is born H3205 of a woman, H802 that he should be righteous? H6663 Behold, he putteth no trust H539 in his saints; H6918 yea, the heavens H8064 are not clean H2141 in his sight. H5869 How much more abominable H8581 and filthy H444 is man, H376 which drinketh H8354 iniquity H5766 H5766 like water? H4325
And it came to pass, as he talked H1696 with him, that the king said H559 unto him, Art thou made H5414 of the king's H4428 counsel? H3289 forbear; H2308 why shouldest thou be smitten? H5221 Then the prophet H5030 forbare, H2308 and said, H559 I know H3045 that God H430 hath determined H3289 to destroy H7843 thee, because thou hast done H6213 this, and hast not hearkened H8085 unto my counsel. Commentary on John 9 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 9
After Christ's departure out of the temple, in the close of the foregoing chapter, and before this happened which is recorded in this chapter, he had been for some time abroad in the country, it is supposed about two or three months; in which interval of time Dr. Lightfoot and other harmonists place all the passages that occur from Lu. 10:17 to 13:17. What is recorded in ch. 7 and 8 was at the feast of tabernacles, in September; what is recorded in this and the following chapter was at the feast of dedication in December, ch. 10:22. Mr. Clark and others place this immediately after the foregoing chapter. In this chapter we have,
Jhn 9:1-7
We have here sight given to a poor beggar that had been blind from his birth. Observe,
Now,
Jhn 9:8-12
Such a wonderful event as the giving of sight to a man born blind could not but be the talk of the town, and many heeded it no more than they do other town-talk, that is but nine days' wonder; but here we are told what the neighbours said of it, for the confirmation of the matter of fact. That which at first was not believed without scrutiny may afterwards be admitted without scruple. Two things are debated in this conference about it:-
Jhn 9:13-34
One would have expected that such a miracle as Christ wrought upon the blind man would have settled his reputation, and silenced and shamed all opposition, but it had the contrary effect; instead of being embraced as a prophet for it, he is prosecuted as a criminal.
Jhn 9:35-38
In these verses we may observe,
Jhn 9:39-41
Christ, having spoken comfort to the poor man that was persecuted, here speaks conviction to his persecutors, a specimen of the distributions of trouble and rest at the great day, 2 Th. 1:6, 7. Probably this was not immediately after his discourse with the man, but he took the next opportunity that offered itself to address the Pharisees. Here is,
