1 But the children H1121 of Israel H3478 committed H4603 a trespass H4604 in the accursed thing: H2764 for Achan, H5912 the son H1121 of Carmi, H3756 the son H1121 of Zabdi, H2067 the son H1121 of Zerah, H2226 of the tribe H4294 of Judah, H3063 took H3947 of the accursed thing: H2764 and the anger H639 of the LORD H3068 was kindled H2734 against the children H1121 of Israel. H3478
And the city H5892 shall be accursed, H2764 even it, and all that are therein, to the LORD: H3068 only Rahab H7343 the harlot H2181 shall live, H2421 she and all that are with her in the house, H1004 because she hid H2244 the messengers H4397 that we sent. H7971 And ye, in any wise H7535 keep H8104 yourselves from the accursed thing, H2764 lest ye make yourselves accursed, H2763 when ye take H3947 of the accursed thing, H2764 and make H7760 the camp H4264 of Israel H3478 a curse, H2764 and trouble H5916 it.
And Achan H5912 answered H6030 Joshua, H3091 and said, H559 Indeed H546 I have sinned H2398 against the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel, H3478 and thus and thus have I done: H6213 When I saw H7200 among the spoils H7998 a H259 goodly H2896 Babylonish H8152 garment, H155 and two hundred H3967 shekels H8255 of silver, H3701 and a H259 wedge H3956 of gold H2091 of fifty H2572 shekels H8255 weight, H4948 then I coveted H2530 them, and took H3947 them; and, behold, they are hid H2934 in the earth H776 in the midst H8432 of my tent, H168 and the silver H3701 under it.
And the sons H1121 of Zerah; H2226 Zimri, H2174 and Ethan, H387 and Heman, H1968 and Calcol, H3633 and Dara: H1873 five H2568 of them in all. And the sons H1121 of Carmi; H3756 Achar, H5917 the troubler H5916 of Israel, H3478 who transgressed H4603 in the thing accursed. H2764
Looking diligently G1983 lest G3361 any man G5100 fail G5302 of G575 the grace G5485 of God; G2316 lest G3361 any G5100 root G4491 of bitterness G4088 springing G5453 up G507 trouble G1776 you, and G2532 thereby G1223 G5026 many G4183 be defiled; G3392 Lest G3361 there be any G5100 fornicator, G4205 or G2228 profane person, G952 as G5613 Esau, G2269 who G3739 for G473 one G3391 morsel of meat G1035 sold G591 his G846 birthright. G4415
It is reported G191 commonly G3654 that there is fornication G4202 among G1722 you, G5213 and G2532 such G5108 fornication G4202 as G3748 is G3687 not so much G3761 as named G3687 among G1722 the Gentiles, G1484 that G5620 one G5100 should have G2192 his father's G3962 wife. G1135 And G2532 ye G5210 are G2075 puffed up, G5448 and G2532 have G3996 not G3780 rather G3123 mourned, G3996 that G2443 he that hath done G4160 this G5124 deed G2041 might be taken away G1808 from G1537 among G3319 you. G5216 For G1063 I G1473 verily, G3303 as G5613 absent G548 in body, G4983 but G1161 present G3918 in spirit, G4151 have judged G2919 already, G2235 as G5613 though I were present, G3918 concerning him that hath G2716 so G3779 done G2716 this deed, G5124 In G1722 the name G3686 of our G2257 Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 when ye G5216 are gathered together, G4863 and G2532 my G1699 spirit, G4151 with G4862 the power G1411 of our G2257 Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 To deliver G3860 such an one G5108 unto Satan G4567 for G1519 the destruction G3639 of the flesh, G4561 that G2443 the spirit G4151 may be saved G4982 in G1722 the day G2250 of the Lord G2962 Jesus. G2424 Your G5216 glorying G2745 is not G3756 good. G2570 Know ye G1492 not G3756 that G3754 a little G3398 leaven G2219 leaveneth G2220 the whole G3650 lump? G5445

Commentary on Joshua 7 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 7
More than once we have found the affairs of Israel, even when they were in the happiest posture and gave the most hopeful prospects, perplexed and embarrassed by sin, and a stop thereby put to the most promising proceedings. The golden calf, the murmuring at Kadesh, and the iniquity of Peor, had broken their measures and given them great disturbance; and in this chapter we have such another instance of the interruption given to the progress of their arms by sin. But it being only the sin of one person or family, and soon expiated, the consequences were not so mischievous as of those other sins; however it served to let them know that they were still upon their good behaviour. We have here,
Jos 7:1-5
The story of this chapter begins with a but. The Lord was with Joshua, and his fame was noised through all that country, so the foregoing chapter ends, and it left no room to doubt but that he would go on as he had begun conquering and to conquer. He did right, and observed his orders in every thing. But the children of Israel committed a trespass, and so set God against them; and then even Joshua's name and fame, his wisdom and courage, could do them no service. If we lose our God, we lose our friends, who cannot help us unless God be for us. Now here is,
Jos 7:6-9
We have here an account of the deep concern Joshua was in upon this sad occasion. He, as a public person, interested himself more than any other in this public loss, and is therein an example to princes and great men, and teaches them to lay much to heart the calamities that befal their people: he is also a type of Christ, to whom the blood of his subjects is precious, Ps. 72:14. Observe,
Jos 7:10-15
We have here God's answer to Joshua's address, which, we may suppose, came from the oracle over the ark, before which Joshua had prostrated himself, v. 6. Those that desire to know the will of God must attend with their desires upon the lively oracles, and wait at wisdom's gates for wisdom's dictates, Prov. 8:34. And let those that find themselves under the tokens of God's displeasure never complain of him, but complain to him, and they shall receive an answer of peace. The answer came immediately, while he was yet speaking (Isa. 65:24), as that to Daniel, Dan. 9:20, etc.
Jos 7:16-26
