2 Take H3947 Aaron H175 and his sons H1121 with him, and the garments, H899 and the anointing H4888 oil, H8081 and a bullock H6499 for the sin offering, H2403 and two H8147 rams, H352 and a basket H5536 of unleavened bread; H4682
And thou shalt make H6213 holy H6944 garments H899 for Aaron H175 thy brother H251 for glory H3519 and for beauty. H8597 And thou shalt speak H1696 unto all that are wise H2450 hearted, H3820 whom I have filled H4390 with the spirit H7307 of wisdom, H2451 that they may make H6213 Aaron's H175 garments H899 to consecrate H6942 him, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office. H3547 And these are the garments H899 which they shall make; H6213 a breastplate, H2833 and an ephod, H646 and a robe, H4598 and a broidered H8665 coat, H3801 a mitre, H4701 and a girdle: H73 and they shall make H6213 holy H6944 garments H899 for Aaron H175 thy brother, H251 and his sons, H1121 that he may minister unto me in the priest's office. H3547
Take H3947 thou also unto thee principal H7218 spices, H1314 of pure H1865 myrrh H4753 five H2568 hundred H3967 shekels, and of sweet H1314 cinnamon H7076 half H4276 so much, H4276 even two hundred H3967 and fifty H2572 shekels, and of sweet H1314 calamus H7070 two hundred H3967 and fifty H2572 shekels, And of cassia H6916 five H2568 hundred H3967 shekels, after the shekel H8255 of the sanctuary, H6944 and of oil H8081 olive H2132 an hin: H1969 And thou shalt make H6213 it an oil H8081 of holy H6944 ointment, H4888 an ointment H7545 compound H4842 after the art H4639 of the apothecary: H7543 it shall be an holy H6944 anointing H4888 oil. H8081 And thou shalt anoint H4886 the tabernacle H168 of the congregation H4150 therewith, and the ark H727 of the testimony, H5715 And the table H7979 and all his vessels, H3627 and the candlestick H4501 and his vessels, H3627 and the altar H4196 of incense, H7004 And the altar H4196 of burnt offering H5930 with all his vessels, H3627 and the laver H3595 and his foot. H3653 And thou shalt sanctify H6942 them, that they may be most H6944 holy: H6944 whatsoever toucheth H5060 them shall be holy. H6942 And thou shalt anoint H4886 Aaron H175 and his sons, H1121 and consecrate H6942 them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office. H3547 And thou shalt speak H1696 unto the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 saying, H559 This shall be an holy H6944 anointing H4888 oil H8081 unto me throughout your generations. H1755 Upon man's H120 flesh H1320 shall it not be poured, H3251 neither shall ye make H6213 any other like it, after the composition H4971 of it: it is holy, H6944 and it shall be holy H6944 unto you. Whosoever H834 H376 compoundeth H7543 any like it, or whosoever putteth H5414 any of it upon a stranger, H2114 shall even be cut H3772 off from his people. H5971 And the LORD H3068 said H559 unto Moses, H4872 Take H3947 unto thee sweet spices, H5561 stacte, H5198 and onycha, H7827 and galbanum; H2464 these sweet H5561 spices H5561 with pure H2134 frankincense: H3828 of each H905 shall there be a like H905 weight: And thou shalt make H6213 it a perfume, H7004 a confection H7545 after the art H4639 of the apothecary, H7543 tempered H4414 together, pure H2889 and holy: H6944 And thou shalt beat H7833 some of it very small, H1854 and put H5414 of it before H6440 the testimony H5715 in the tabernacle H168 of the congregation, H4150 where I will meet H3259 with thee: it shall be unto you most H6944 holy. H6944 And as for the perfume H7004 which thou shalt make, H6213 ye shall not make H6213 to yourselves according to the composition H4971 thereof: it shall be unto thee holy H6944 for the LORD. H3068
And of the blue, H8504 and purple, H713 and scarlet, H8144 H8438 they made H6213 cloths H899 of service, H8278 to do service H8334 in the holy H6944 place, and made H6213 the holy H6944 garments H899 for Aaron; H175 as the LORD H3068 commanded H6680 Moses. H4872 And he made H6213 the ephod H646 of gold, H2091 blue, H8504 and purple, H713 and scarlet, H8438 H8144 and fine twined H7806 linen. H8336 And they did beat H7554 the gold H2091 into H854 thin plates, H6341 and cut H7112 it into wires, H6616 to work H6213 H8432 it in the blue, H8504 and in the purple, H713 and in the scarlet, H8144 H8438 and in the fine linen, H8336 with cunning H2803 work. H4639 They made H6213 shoulderpieces H3802 for it, to couple it together: H2266 by the two H8147 edges H7098 H7099 was it coupled together. H2266 And the curious girdle H2805 of his ephod, H642 that was upon it, was of the same, according to the work H4639 thereof; of gold, H2091 blue, H8504 and purple, H713 and scarlet, H8144 H8438 and fine twined H7806 linen; H8336 as the LORD H3068 commanded H6680 Moses. H4872 And they wrought H6213 onyx H7718 stones H68 inclosed H4142 in ouches H4865 of gold, H2091 graven, H6605 as signets H2368 are graven, H6603 with the names H8034 of the children H1121 of Israel. H3478 And he put H7760 them on the shoulders H3802 of the ephod, H646 that they should be stones H68 for a memorial H2146 to the children H1121 of Israel; H3478 as the LORD H3068 commanded H6680 Moses. H4872 And he made H6213 the breastplate H2833 of cunning H2803 work, H4639 like the work H4639 of the ephod; H646 of gold, H2091 blue, H8504 and purple, H713 and scarlet, H8144 H8438 and fine twined H7806 linen. H8336 It was foursquare; H7251 they made H6213 the breastplate H2833 double: H3717 a span H2239 was the length H753 thereof, and a span H2239 the breadth H7341 thereof, being doubled. H3717 And they set H4390 in it four H702 rows H2905 of stones: H68 the first row H2905 was a sardius, H124 a topaz, H6357 and a carbuncle: H1304 this was the first H259 row. H2905 And the second H8145 row, H2905 an emerald, H5306 a sapphire, H5601 and a diamond. H3095 And the third H7992 row, H2905 a ligure, H3958 an agate, H7618 and an amethyst. H306 And the fourth H7243 row, H2905 a beryl, H8658 an onyx, H7718 and a jasper: H3471 they were inclosed H4142 in ouches H4865 of gold H2091 in their inclosings. H4396 And the stones H68 were according to the names H8034 of the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 twelve, H8147 H6240 according to their names, H8034 like the engravings H6603 of a signet, H2368 every one H376 with his name, H8034 according to the twelve H8147 H6240 tribes. H7626 And they made H6213 upon the breastplate H2833 chains H8333 at the ends, H1383 of wreathen H5688 work H4639 of pure H2889 gold. H2091 And they made H6213 two H8147 ouches H4865 of gold, H2091 and two H8147 gold H2091 rings; H2885 and put H5414 the two H8147 rings H2885 in the two H8147 ends H7098 of the breastplate. H2833 And they put H5414 the two H8147 wreathen chains H5688 of gold H2091 in the two H8147 rings H2885 on the ends H7098 of the breastplate. H2833 And the two H8147 ends H7098 of the two H8147 wreathen H5688 chains H5688 they fastened H5414 in the two H8147 ouches, H4865 and put H5414 them on the shoulderpieces H3802 of the ephod, H646 before H6440 it. H4136 And they made H6213 two H8147 rings H2885 of gold, H2091 and put H7760 them on the two H8147 ends H7098 of the breastplate, H2833 upon the border H8193 of it, which was on the side H5676 of the ephod H646 inward. H1004 And they made H6213 two H8147 other golden H2091 rings, H2885 and put H5414 them on the two H8147 sides H3802 of the ephod H646 underneath, H4295 toward H4136 the forepart H6440 of it, over against H5980 the other coupling H4225 thereof, above H4605 the curious girdle H2805 of the ephod. H646 And they did bind H7405 the breastplate H2833 by his rings H2885 unto the rings H2885 of the ephod H646 with a lace H6616 of blue, H8504 that it might be above the curious girdle H2805 of the ephod, H646 and that the breastplate H2833 might not be loosed H2118 from the ephod; H646 as the LORD H3068 commanded H6680 Moses. H4872 And he made H6213 the robe H4598 of the ephod H646 of woven H707 work, H4639 all H3632 of blue. H8504 And there was an hole H6310 in the midst H8432 of the robe, H4598 as the hole H6310 of an habergeon, H8473 with a band H8193 round about H5439 the hole, H6310 that it should not rend. H7167 And they made H6213 upon the hems H7757 of the robe H4598 pomegranates H7416 of blue, H8504 and purple, H713 and scarlet, H8144 H8438 and twined H7806 linen. And they made H6213 bells H6472 of pure H2889 gold, H2091 and put H5414 the bells H6472 between H8432 the pomegranates H7416 upon the hem H7757 of the robe, H4598 round about H5439 between H8432 the pomegranates; H7416 A bell H6472 and a pomegranate, H7416 a bell H6472 and a pomegranate, H7416 round about H5439 the hem H7757 of the robe H4598 to minister H8334 in; as the LORD H3068 commanded H6680 Moses. H4872 And they made H6213 coats H3801 of fine linen H8336 of woven H707 work H4639 for Aaron, H175 and for his sons, H1121 And a mitre H4701 of fine linen, H8336 and goodly H6287 bonnets H4021 of fine linen, H8336 and linen H906 breeches H4370 of fine twined H7806 linen, H8336 And a girdle H73 of fine twined H7806 linen, H8336 and blue, H8504 and purple, H713 and scarlet, H8144 H8438 of needlework; H7551 H4639 as the LORD H3068 commanded H6680 Moses. H4872 And they made H6213 the plate H6731 of the holy H6944 crown H5145 of pure H2889 gold, H2091 and wrote H3789 upon it a writing, H4385 like to the engravings H6603 of a signet, H2368 HOLINESS H6944 TO THE LORD. H3068 And they tied H5414 unto it a lace H6616 of blue, H8504 to fasten H5414 it on high H4605 upon the mitre; H4701 as the LORD H3068 commanded H6680 Moses. H4872
And thou shalt bring H7126 Aaron H175 and his sons H1121 unto the door H6607 of the tabernacle H168 of the congregation, H4150 and wash H7364 them with water. H4325 And thou shalt put H3847 upon Aaron H175 the holy H6944 garments, H899 and anoint H4886 him, and sanctify H6942 him; that he may minister unto me in the priest's office. H3547 And thou shalt bring H7126 his sons, H1121 and clothe H3847 them with coats: H3801 And thou shalt anoint H4886 them, as thou didst anoint H4886 their father, H1 that they may minister unto me in the priest's office: H3547 for their anointing H4888 shall surely be an everlasting H5769 priesthood H3550 throughout their generations. Commentary on Leviticus 8 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 8
This chapter gives us an account of the solemn consecration of Aaron and his sons to the priest's office.
Lev 8:1-13
God had given Moses orders to consecrate Aaron and his sons to the priests' office, when he was with him the first time upon mount Sinai, Ex. 28 and 29, where we have also the particular instructions he had how to do it. Now here we have,
Lev 8:14-30
The covenant of priesthood must be made by sacrifice, as well as other covenants, Ps. 50:5. And thus Christ was consecrated by the sacrifice of himself, once for all. Sacrifices of each kind must be offered for the priests, that they might with the more tenderness and concern offer the gifts and sacrifices of the people, with compassion on the ignorant, and on those that were out of the way, not insulting over those for whom sacrifices were offered, remembering that they themselves had had sacrifices offered for them, being compassed with infirmity.
Lev 8:31-36
Moses, having done his part of the ceremony, now leaves Aaron and his sons to do theirs.
Gospel ministers are compared to those who served at the altar, for they minister about holy things (1 Co. 9:13), they are God's mouth to the people and the people's to God, the pastors and teachers Christ has appointed to continue in the church to the end of the world: they seem to be meant in that promise which points at gospel times (Isa. 66:21), I will take of them for priests and for Levites. No man may take this honour to himself, but he who upon trial is found to be clothed and anointed by the Spirit of God with gifts and graces to qualify him for it, and who with purpose of heart devotes himself entirely to the service, and is then by the word and prayer (for so every thing is sanctified), and the imposition of the hands of those that give themselves to the word and prayer, set apart to the office, and recommended to Christ as a servant and to the church as a steward and guide. And those that are thus solemnly dedicated to God ought not to depart from his service, but faithfully to abide in it all their days; and those that do so, and continue labouring in the word and doctrine, are to be accounted worthy of double honour, double to that of the Old-Testament priests.
