1 Then G1161 drew near G2258 G1448 unto him G846 all G3956 the publicans G5057 and G2532 sinners G268 for to hear G191 him. G846
And G2532 it came to pass, G1096 as Jesus G2424 sat at meat G345 in G1722 the house, G3614 G2532 behold, G2400 many G4183 publicans G5057 and G2532 sinners G268 came G2064 and sat down G4873 with him G846 and G2532 his G846 disciples. G3101 And G2532 when the Pharisees G5330 saw G1492 it, they said G2036 unto his G846 disciples, G3101 Why G1302 eateth G2068 your G5216 Master G1320 with G3326 publicans G5057 and G2532 sinners? G268 But G1161 when Jesus G2424 heard G191 that, he said G2036 unto them, G846 They that be G2192 whole G2480 need G5532 not G3756 a physician, G2395 but G235 they that are G2192 sick. G2560 But G1161 go ye G4198 and learn G3129 what G5101 that meaneth, G2076 I will G2309 have mercy, G1656 and G2532 not G3756 sacrifice: G2378 for G1063 I am G2064 not G3756 come G2064 to call G2564 the righteous, G1342 but G235 sinners G268 to G1519 repentance. G3341
But G1161 what G5101 think G1380 ye? G5213 A certain man G444 had G2192 two G1417 sons; G5043 and G2532 he came G4334 to the first, G4413 and said, G2036 Son, G5043 go G5217 work G2038 to day G4594 in G1722 my G3450 vineyard. G290 He answered G1161 G611 and said, G2036 I will G2309 not: G3756 but G1161 afterward G5305 he repented, G3338 and went. G565 And G2532 he came G4334 to the second, G1208 and said G2036 likewise. G5615 And G1161 he answered G611 and said, G2036 I G1473 go, sir: G2962 and G2532 went G565 not. G3756 Whether G5101 of G1537 them twain G1417 did G4160 the will G2307 of his father? G3962 They say G3004 unto him, G846 The first. G4413 Jesus G2424 saith G3004 unto them, G846 Verily G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 That G3754 the publicans G5057 and G2532 the harlots G4204 go G4254 into G1519 the kingdom G932 of God G2316 before G4254 you. G5209
And G2532 Levi G3018 made G4160 him G846 a great G3173 feast G1403 in G1722 his own G846 house: G3614 and G2532 there was G2258 a great G4183 company G3793 of publicans G5057 and G2532 of others G243 that G3739 sat down G2258 G2621 with G3326 them. G846 But G2532 their G846 scribes G1122 and G2532 Pharisees G5330 murmured G1111 against G4314 his G846 disciples, G3101 saying, G3004 Why G1302 do ye eat G2068 and G2532 drink G4095 with G3326 publicans G5057 and G2532 sinners? G268 And G2532 Jesus G2424 answering G611 said G2036 unto G4314 them, G846 They that are whole G5198 need G5532 G2192 not G3756 a physician; G2395 but G235 they that are G2192 sick. G2560 I came G2064 not G3756 to call G2564 the righteous, G1342 but G235 sinners G268 to G1519 repentance. G3341

Commentary on Luke 15 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 15
Evil manners, we say, beget good laws; so, in this chapter, the murmuring of the scribes and Pharisees at the grace of Christ, and the favour he showed to publicans and sinners, gave occasion for a more full discovery of that grace than perhaps otherwise we should have had in these three parables which we have in this chapter, the scope of all of which is the same, to show, not only what God had said and sworn in the Old Testament, that he had no pleasure in the death and ruin of sinners, but that he had great pleasure in their return and repentance, and rejoices in the gracious entertainment he gives them thereupon. Here is,
Luk 15:1-10
Here is,
Luk 15:11-32
We have here the parable of the prodigal son, the scope of which is the same with those before, to show how pleasing to God the conversion of sinners is, of great sinners, and how ready he is to receive and entertain such, upon their repentance; but the circumstances of the parable do much more largely and fully set forth the riches of gospel grace than those did, and it has been, and will be while the world stands, of unspeakable use to poor sinners, both to direct and to encourage them in repenting and returning to God. Now,
The younger son is the prodigal, whose character and case are here designed to represent that of a sinner, that of every one of us in our natural state, but especially of some. Now we are to observe concerning him,
Now the condition of the prodigal in this ramble of his represents to us a sinful state, that miserable state into which man is fallen.
