12 And G2532 the younger G3501 of them G846 said G2036 to his father, G3962 Father, G3962 give G1325 me G3427 the portion G3313 of goods G3776 that falleth G1911 to me. And G2532 he divided G1244 unto them G846 his living. G979
For G1063 all G3956 they did cast in G906 of G1537 their G846 abundance; G4052 but G1161 she G3778 G846 of G1537 her G846 want G5304 did cast in G906 all G3956 that G3745 she had, G2192 even all G3650 her G846 living. G979
But G1161 as soon as G3753 this G3778 thy G4675 son G5207 was come, G2064 which G3588 hath devoured G2719 thy G4675 living G979 with G3326 harlots, G4204 thou hast killed G2380 for him G846 the fatted G4618 calf. G3448
Then it shall be, when H3117 he maketh his sons H1121 to inherit H5157 that which he hath, that he may H3201 not make the son H1121 of the beloved H157 firstborn H1069 before H6440 the son H1121 of the hated, H8130 which is indeed the firstborn: H1060 But he shall acknowledge H5234 the son H1121 of the hated H8130 for the firstborn, H1060 by giving H5414 him a double H8147 portion H6310 of all that he hath: H4672 for he is the beginning H7225 of his strength; H202 the right H4941 of the firstborn H1062 is his.
The LORD H3068 is the portion H4490 of mine inheritance H2506 and of my cup: H3563 thou maintainest H8551 my lot. H1486 The lines H2256 are fallen H5307 unto me in pleasant H5273 places; yea, I have a goodly H8231 heritage. H5159
From men H4962 which are thy hand, H3027 O LORD, H3068 from men H4962 of the world, H2465 which have their portion H2506 in this life, H2416 and whose belly H990 thou fillest H4390 with thy hid H6840 treasure: they are full H7646 of children, H1121 and leave H3240 the rest H3499 of their substance to their babes. Commentary on Luke 15 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 15
Evil manners, we say, beget good laws; so, in this chapter, the murmuring of the scribes and Pharisees at the grace of Christ, and the favour he showed to publicans and sinners, gave occasion for a more full discovery of that grace than perhaps otherwise we should have had in these three parables which we have in this chapter, the scope of all of which is the same, to show, not only what God had said and sworn in the Old Testament, that he had no pleasure in the death and ruin of sinners, but that he had great pleasure in their return and repentance, and rejoices in the gracious entertainment he gives them thereupon. Here is,
Luk 15:1-10
Here is,
Luk 15:11-32
We have here the parable of the prodigal son, the scope of which is the same with those before, to show how pleasing to God the conversion of sinners is, of great sinners, and how ready he is to receive and entertain such, upon their repentance; but the circumstances of the parable do much more largely and fully set forth the riches of gospel grace than those did, and it has been, and will be while the world stands, of unspeakable use to poor sinners, both to direct and to encourage them in repenting and returning to God. Now,
The younger son is the prodigal, whose character and case are here designed to represent that of a sinner, that of every one of us in our natural state, but especially of some. Now we are to observe concerning him,
Now the condition of the prodigal in this ramble of his represents to us a sinful state, that miserable state into which man is fallen.
