32 For G1063 he shall be delivered G3860 unto the Gentiles, G1484 and G2532 shall be mocked, G1702 and G2532 spitefully entreated, G5195 and G2532 spitted on: G1716
And G1161 Herod G2264 with G4862 his G846 men of war G4753 set G1848 him G846 at nought, G1848 and G2532 mocked G1702 him, and arrayed G4016 him G846 in a gorgeous G2986 robe, G2066 and sent G375 him G846 again G375 to Pilate. G4091
The God G2316 of Abraham, G11 and G2532 of Isaac, G2464 and G2532 of Jacob, G2384 the God G2316 of our G2257 fathers, G3962 hath glorified G1392 his G846 Son G3816 Jesus; G2424 whom G3739 ye G5210 delivered up, G3860 and G2532 denied G720 him G846 in G2596 the presence G4383 of Pilate, G4091 when he was determined G2919 to let G630 him G1565 go. G630
And G2532 the whole G537 multitude G4128 of them G846 arose, G450 and led G71 him G846 unto G1909 Pilate. G4091
And G2532 some G5100 began G756 to spit G1716 on him, G846 and G2532 to cover G4028 his G846 face, G4383 and G2532 to buffet G2852 him, G846 and G2532 to say G3004 unto him, G846 Prophesy: G4395 and G2532 the servants G5257 did strike G906 him G846 with the palms of their hands. G4475
And G2532 they stripped G1562 him, G846 and put on G4060 him G846 a scarlet G2847 robe. G5511 And G2532 when they had platted G4120 a crown G4735 of G1537 thorns, G173 they put G2007 it upon G1909 his G846 head, G2776 and G2532 a reed G2563 in G1909 his G846 right hand: G1188 and G2532 they bowed the knee G1120 before G1715 him, G846 and mocked G1702 him, G846 saying, G3004 Hail, G5463 King G935 of the Jews! G2453 And G2532 they spit G1716 upon G1519 him, G846 and took G2983 the reed, G2563 and G2532 smote G5180 him G846 on G1519 the head. G2776
And G2532 when they had bound G1210 him, G846 they led him away, G520 and G2532 delivered G3860 him G846 to Pontius G4194 Pilate G4091 the governor. G2232
Him, G5126 being delivered G1560 by the determinate G3724 counsel G1012 and G2532 foreknowledge G4268 of God, G2316 ye have taken, G2983 and by G1223 wicked G459 hands G5495 have crucified G4362 and slain: G337
Then G5119 Pilate G4091 therefore G3767 took G2983 Jesus, G2424 and G2532 scourged G3146 him. And G2532 the soldiers G4757 platted G4120 a crown G4735 of G1537 thorns, G173 and put it on G2007 his G846 head, G2776 and G2532 they put on G4016 him G846 a purple G4210 robe, G2440 And G2532 said, G3004 Hail, G5463 King G935 of the Jews! G2453 and G2532 they smote G1325 him G846 with their hands. G4475 Pilate G4091 therefore G3767 went G1831 forth G1854 again, G3825 and G2532 saith G3004 unto them, G846 Behold, G2396 I bring G71 him G846 forth G1854 to you, G5213 that G2443 ye may know G1097 that G3754 I find G2147 no G3762 fault G156 in G1722 him. G846 Then G3767 came G1831 Jesus G2424 forth, G1854 wearing G5409 the crown G4735 of thorns, G174 and G2532 the purple G4210 robe. G2440 And G2532 Pilate saith G3004 unto them, G846 Behold G2396 the man! G444
Then G3767 led they G71 Jesus G2424 from G575 Caiaphas G2533 unto G1519 the hall of judgment: G4232 and G1161 it was G2258 early; G4405 and G2532 they themselves G846 went G1525 not G3756 into G1519 the judgment hall, G4232 lest G3363 they should be defiled; G3392 but G235 that G2443 they might eat G5315 the passover. G3957
And G1161 when he G846 had G2036 thus G5023 spoken, G2036 one G1520 of the officers G5257 which stood by G3936 struck G1325 G4475 Jesus G2424 with the palm of his hand, G1325 G4475 saying, G2036 Answerest thou G611 the high priest G749 so? G3779
And G2532 the men G435 that held G4912 Jesus G2424 mocked G1702 him, G846 and smote G1194 him. And G2532 when they had blindfolded G4028 him, G846 they struck G5180 him G846 on the face, G4383 and G2532 asked G1905 him, G846 saying, G3004 Prophesy, G4395 who G5101 is it G2076 that smote G3817 thee? G4571 And G2532 many G4183 other things G2087 blasphemously G987 spake they G3004 against G1519 him. G846
And G2532 they clothed G1746 him G846 with purple, G4209 and G2532 platted G4120 a crown G4735 of thorns, G174 and put it about G4060 his G846 head, And G2532 began G756 to salute G782 him, G846 Hail, G5463 King G935 of the Jews! G2453 And G2532 they smote G5180 him G846 on the head G2776 with a reed, G2563 and G2532 did spit G1716 upon him, G846 and G2532 bowing G5087 their knees G1119 worshipped G4352 him. G846 And G2532 when G3753 they had mocked G1702 him, G846 they took off G1562 the purple G4209 from him, G846 and G2532 put G1746 his own G2398 clothes G2440 on G1746 him, G846 and G2532 led G1806 him G846 out G1806 to G2443 crucify G4717 him. G846
And G2532 straightway G2112 in G1909 the morning G4404 the chief priests G749 held G4160 a consultation G4824 with G3326 the elders G4245 and G2532 scribes G1122 and G2532 the whole G3650 council, G4892 and bound G1210 Jesus, G2424 and carried him away, G667 and G2532 delivered G3860 him to Pilate. G4091
From G575 that time forth G5119 began G756 Jesus G2424 to shew G1166 unto his G846 disciples, G3101 how that G3754 he G846 must G1163 go G565 unto G1519 Jerusalem, G2414 and G2532 suffer G3958 many things G4183 of G575 the elders G4245 and G2532 chief priests G749 and G2532 scribes, G1122 and G2532 be killed, G615 and G2532 be raised again G1453 the third G5154 day. Commentary on Luke 18 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 18
In this chapter we have,
And these four passages we had before in Matthew and Mark.
Luk 18:1-8
This parable has its key hanging at the door; the drift and design of it are prefixed. Christ spoke it with this intent, to teach us that men ought always to pray and not to faint, v. 1. It supposes that all God's people are praying people; all God's children keep up both a constant and an occasional correspondence with him, send to him statedly, and upon every emergency. It is our privilege and honour that we may pray. It is our duty; we ought to pray, we sin if we neglect it. It is to be our constant work; we ought always to pray, it is that which the duty of every day requires. We must pray, and never grow weary of praying, nor think of leaving it off till it comes to be swallowed up in everlasting praise. But that which seems particularly designed here is to teach us constancy and perseverance in our requests for some spiritual mercies that we are in pursuit of, relating either to ourselves or to the church of God. When we are praying for strength against our spiritual enemies, our lusts and corruptions, which are our worst enemies, we must continue instant in prayer, must pray and not faint, for we shall not seek God's face in vain. So we must likewise in our prayers for the deliverance of the people of God out of the hands of their persecutors and oppressors.
Luk 18:9-14
The scope of this parable likewise is prefixed to it, and we are told (v. 9) who they were whom it was levelled at, and for whom it was calculated. He designed it for the conviction of some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others. They were such as had,
Luk 18:15-17
This passage of story we had both in Matthew and Mark; it very fitly follows here after the story of the publican, as a confirmation of the truth which was to be illustrated by that parable, that those shall be accepted with God, and honoured, who humble themselves, and for them Christ has blessings in store, the choicest and best of blessings. Observe here,
Luk 18:18-30
In these verses we have,
Luk 18:31-34
Here is,
Luk 18:35-43
Christ came not only to bring light to a dark world, and so to set before us the objects we are to have in view, but also to give sight to blind souls, and by healing the organ to enable them to view those objects. As a token of this, he cured many of their bodily blindness: we have now an account of one to whom he gave sight near Jericho. Mark gives us an account of one, and names him, whom he cured as he went out of Jericho, Mk. 10:46. Matthew speaks of two whom he cured as they departed from Jericho, Mt. 20:30. Luke says it was en toµ engizein auton-when he was near to Jericho, which might be when he was going out of it as well as when he was coming into it. Observe,
