28 And G2532 when he had thus G5023 spoken, G2036 he went G4198 before, G1715 ascending up G305 to G1519 Jerusalem. G2414
And G1161 it came to pass, G1096 when G1722 the time G2250 was come G4845 that he G846 should be received up, G354 G2532 he G846 stedfastly set G4741 his G846 face G4383 to go G4198 to G1519 Jerusalem, G2419
Sacrifice H2077 and offering H4503 thou didst not desire; H2654 mine ears H241 hast thou opened: H3738 burnt offering H5930 and sin offering H2401 hast thou not required. H7592 Then said H559 I, Lo, I come: H935 in the volume H4039 of the book H5612 it is written H3789 of me, I delight H2654 to do H6213 thy will, H7522 O my God: H430 yea, thy law H8451 is within H8432 my heart. H4578
And G1161 they were G2258 in G1722 the way G3598 going up G305 to G1519 Jerusalem; G2414 and G2532 Jesus G2424 went G2258 before G4254 them: G846 and G2532 they were amazed; G2284 and G2532 as they followed, G190 they were afraid. G5399 And G2532 he took G3880 again G3825 the twelve, G1427 and began G756 to tell G3004 them G846 what things should G3195 happen G4819 unto him, G846 Saying, G3754 Behold, G2400 we go up G305 to G1519 Jerusalem; G2414 and G2532 the Son G5207 of man G444 shall be delivered G3860 unto the chief priests, G749 and G2532 unto the scribes; G1122 and G2532 they shall condemn G2632 him G846 to death, G2288 and G2532 shall deliver G3860 him G846 to the Gentiles: G1484 And G2532 they shall mock G1702 him, G846 and G2532 shall scourge G3146 him, G846 and G2532 shall spit upon G1716 him, G846 and G2532 shall kill G615 him: G846 and G2532 the third G5154 day G2250 he shall rise again. G450
But G1161 I have G2192 a baptism G908 to be baptized with; G907 and G2532 how G4459 am I straitened G4912 till G2193 G3757 it be accomplished! G5055
Then G1161 he took G3880 unto him the twelve, G1427 and said G2036 unto G4314 them, G846 Behold, G2400 we go up G305 to G1519 Jerusalem, G2414 and G2532 all things G3956 that are written G1125 by G1223 the prophets G4396 concerning the Son G5207 of man G444 shall be accomplished. G5055
Looking G872 unto G1519 Jesus G2424 the author G747 and G2532 finisher G5051 of our faith; G4102 who G3739 for G473 the joy G5479 that was set before G4295 him G846 endured G5278 the cross, G4716 despising G2706 the shame, G152 and G5037 is set down G2523 at G1722 the right hand G1188 of the throne G2362 of God. Commentary on Luke 19 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 19
In this chapter we have,
Luk 19:1-10
Many, no doubt, were converted to the faith of Christ of whom no account is kept in the gospels; but the conversion of some, whose case had something in it extraordinary, is recorded, as this of Zaccheus. Christ passed through Jericho, v. 1. This city was build under a curse, yet Christ honoured it with his presence, for the gospel takes away the curse. Though it ought not to have been built, yet it was not therefore a sin to live in it when it was built. Christ was now going from the other side Jordan to Bethany near Jerusalem, to raise Lazarus to life; when he was going to do one good work he contrived to do many by the way. He did good both to the souls and to the bodies of people; we have here an instance of the former. Observe,
Luk 19:11-27
Our Lord Jesus is now upon his way to Jerusalem, to his last passover, when he was to suffer and die; now here we are told,
Luk 19:28-40
We have here the same account of Christ's riding in some sort of triumph (such as it was) into Jerusalem which we had before in Matthew and Mark; let us therefore here only observe,
Luk 19:41-48
The great Ambassador from heaven is here making his public entry into Jerusalem, not to be respected there, but to be rejected; he knew what a nest of vipers he was throwing himself into, and yet see here two instances of his love to that place and his concern for it.
