2 And G1161 they began G756 to accuse G2723 him, G846 saying, G3004 We found G2147 this G5126 fellow perverting G1294 the nation, G1484 and G2532 forbidding G2967 to give G1325 tribute G5411 to Caesar, G2541 saying G3004 that he himself G1438 is G1511 Christ G5547 a King. G935
And G1161 when they found G2147 them G846 not, G3361 they drew G4951 Jason G2394 and G2532 certain G5100 brethren G80 unto G1909 the rulers of the city, G4173 crying, G994 G3754 These G3778 that have turned G387 the world G3625 upside down G387 are come G3918 hither G1759 also; G2532 Whom G3739 Jason G2394 hath received: G5264 and G2532 these G3778 all G3956 do G4238 contrary G561 to the decrees G1378 of Caesar, G2541 saying G3004 that there is G1511 another G2087 king, G935 one Jesus. G2424
Having G2192 a good G18 conscience; G4893 that, G2443 whereas G1722 G3739 they speak evil G2635 of you, G5216 as G5613 of evildoers, G2555 they may be ashamed G2617 that falsely accuse G1908 your G5216 good G18 conversation G391 in G1722 Christ. G5547 For G1063 it is better, G2909 if G1487 the will G2307 of God G2316 be so, G2309 that ye suffer G3958 for well doing, G15 than G2228 for evil doing. G2554 For G3754 Christ G5547 also G2532 hath once G530 suffered G3958 for G4012 sins, G266 the just G1342 for G5228 the unjust, G94 that G2443 he might bring G4317 us G2248 to God, G2316 being put to death G2289 G3303 in the flesh, G4561 but G1161 quickened G2227 by the Spirit: G4151
And G2532 brought G4317 them G846 to the magistrates, G4755 saying, G2036 These G3778 men, G444 being G5225 Jews, G2453 do exceedingly trouble G1613 our G2257 city, G4172 And G2532 teach G2605 customs, G1485 which G3739 are G1832 not G3756 lawful G1832 for us G2254 to receive, G3858 neither G3761 to observe, G4160 being G5607 Romans. G4514
Hereafter G3568 G575 shall G2071 the Son G5207 of man G444 sit G2521 on G1537 the right hand G1188 of the power G1411 of God. G2316 Then G1161 said G5346 they all, G3956 Art G1488 thou G4771 then G3767 the Son G5207 of God? G2316 And G1161 he said G2036 unto G4314 them, G846 Ye G5210 say G3004 that G3754 I G1473 am. G1510
And G2532 the chief priests G749 accused G2723 him G846 of many things: G4183 but G1161 he G846 answered G611 nothing. G3762 And G1161 Pilate G4091 asked G1905 him G846 again, G3825 saying, G3004 Answerest thou G611 nothing? G3756 G3762 behold G2396 how many things G4214 they witness G2649 against thee. G4675 But G1161 Jesus G2424 yet G3765 answered G611 nothing; G3762 so G5620 that Pilate G4091 marvelled. G2296
But G1161 he held his peace, G4623 and G2532 answered G611 nothing. G3762 Again G3825 the high priest G749 asked G1905 him, G846 and G2532 said G3004 unto him, G846 Art G1488 thou G4771 the Christ, G5547 the Son G5207 of the Blessed? G2128 And G1161 Jesus G2424 said, G2036 I G1473 am: G1510 and G2532 ye shall see G3700 the Son G5207 of man G444 sitting G2521 on G1537 the right hand G1188 of power, G1411 and G2532 coming G2064 in G3326 the clouds G3507 of heaven. G3772
And set H3427 two H8147 men, H582 sons H1121 of Belial, H1100 before him, to bear witness H5749 against him, saying, H559 Thou didst blaspheme H1288 God H430 and the king. H4428 And then carry him out, H3318 and stone H5619 him, that he may die. H4191 And the men H582 of his city, H5892 even the elders H2205 and the nobles H2715 who were the inhabitants H3427 in his city, H5892 did H6213 as Jezebel H348 had sent H7971 unto them, and as it was written H3789 in the letters H5612 which she had sent H7971 unto them. They proclaimed H7121 a fast, H6685 and set H3427 Naboth H5022 on high H7218 among the people. H5971 And there came H935 in two H8147 men, H582 children H1121 of Belial, H1100 and sat H3427 before him: and the men H582 of Belial H1100 witnessed H5749 against him, even against Naboth, H5022 in the presence of the people, H5971 saying, H559 Naboth H5022 did blaspheme H1288 God H430 and the king. H4428 Then they carried him forth H3318 out H2351 of the city, H5892 and stoned H5619 him with stones, H68 that he died. H4191
Then G3767 Pilate G4091 entered G1525 into G1519 the judgment hall G4232 again, G3825 and G2532 called G5455 Jesus, G2424 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 Art G1488 thou G4771 the King G935 of the Jews? G2453 Jesus G2424 answered G611 him, G846 Sayest G3004 thou G4771 this thing G5124 of G575 thyself, G1438 or G2228 did others G243 tell it G2036 thee G4671 of G4012 me? G1700 Pilate G4091 answered, G611 G3385 Am G1510 I G1473 a Jew? G2453 Thine own G4674 nation G1484 and G2532 the chief priests G749 have delivered G3860 thee G4571 unto me: G1698 what G5101 hast thou done? G4160 Jesus G2424 answered, G611 My G1699 kingdom G932 is G2076 not G3756 of G1537 this G5127 world: G2889 if G1487 my G1699 kingdom G932 were G2258 of G1537 this G5127 world, G2889 then would G302 my G1699 servants G5257 fight, G75 that G3363 I should G3860 not G3363 be delivered G3860 to the Jews: G2453 but G1161 now G3568 is G2076 my G1699 kingdom G932 not G3756 from hence. G1782 Pilate G4091 therefore G3767 said G2036 unto him, G846 Art G1488 thou G4771 a king G935 then? G3766 Jesus G2424 answered, G611 Thou G4771 sayest G3004 that G3754 I G1473 am G1510 a king. G935 To G1519 this G5124 end was G1080 I G1473 born, G1080 and G2532 for G1519 this G5124 cause came I G2064 into G1519 the world, G2889 that G2443 I should bear witness G3140 unto the truth. G225 Every one G3956 that is G5607 of G1537 the truth G225 heareth G191 my G3450 voice. G5456
And G2532 they watched G3906 him, and sent forth G649 spies, G1455 which should feign G5271 G1511 themselves G1438 just men, G1342 that G2443 they might take hold G1949 of his G846 words, G3056 that so G1519 they might deliver G3860 him G846 unto the power G746 and G2532 authority G1849 of the governor. G2232 And G2532 they asked G1905 him, G846 saying, G3004 Master, G1320 we know G1492 that G3754 thou sayest G3004 and G2532 teachest G1321 rightly, G3723 G2532 neither G3756 acceptest thou G2983 the person G4383 of any, but G235 teachest G1321 the way G3598 of God G2316 truly: G225 G1909 Is it lawful G1832 for us G2254 to give G1325 tribute G5411 unto Caesar, G2541 or G2228 no? G3756 But G1161 he perceived G2657 their G846 craftiness, G3834 and said G2036 unto G4314 them, G846 Why G5101 tempt ye G3985 me? G3165 Shew G1925 me G3427 a penny. G1220 Whose G5101 image G1504 and G2532 superscription G1923 hath it? G2192 They answered G611 and G1161 said, G2036 Caesar's. G2541 And G1161 he said G2036 unto them, G846 Render G591 therefore G5106 unto Caesar G2541 the things which be G3588 Caesar's, G2541 and G2532 unto God G2316 the things which be G3588 God's. G2316
And G1161 the chief priests G749 and G2532 all G3650 the council G4892 sought G2212 for witness G3141 against G2596 Jesus G2424 to G1519 put G2289 him G846 to death; G2289 and G2532 found G2147 none. G3756 For G1063 many G4183 bare false witness G5576 against G2596 him, G846 but G2532 their witness G3141 agreed G2258 not G2470 G3756 together. G2258
Now G1161 the chief priests, G749 and G2532 elders, G4245 and G2532 all G3650 the council, G4892 sought G2212 false witness G5577 against G2596 Jesus, G2424 to G3704 put G2289 him G846 to death; G2289 But G2532 found G2147 none: G3756 yea, G2532 though many G4183 false witnesses G5575 came, G4334 yet found they G2147 none. G3756 G1161 At the last G5305 came G4334 two G1417 false witnesses, G5575
And when he was in the gate H8179 of Benjamin, H1144 a captain H1167 of the ward H6488 was there, whose name H8034 was Irijah, H3376 the son H1121 of Shelemiah, H8018 the son H1121 of Hananiah; H2608 and he took H8610 Jeremiah H3414 the prophet, H5030 saying, H559 Thou fallest away H5307 to the Chaldeans. H3778 Then said H559 Jeremiah, H3414 It is false; H8267 I fall not away H5307 to the Chaldeans. H3778 But he hearkened H8085 not to him: so Irijah H3376 took H8610 Jeremiah, H3414 and brought H935 him to the princes. H8269 Wherefore the princes H8269 were wroth H7107 with Jeremiah, H3414 and smote H5221 him, and put H5414 him in prison H612 in the house H1004 of Jonathan H3083 the scribe: H5608 for they had made H6213 that the prison. H3608
Who whet H8150 their tongue H3956 like a sword, H2719 and bend H1869 their bows to shoot their arrows, H2671 even bitter H4751 words: H1697 That they may shoot H3384 in secret H4565 at the perfect: H8535 suddenly H6597 do they shoot H3384 at him, and fear H3372 not. They encourage H2388 themselves in an evil H7451 matter: H1697 they commune H5608 of laying H2934 snares H4170 privily; H2934 they say, H559 Who shall see H7200 them? They search out H2664 iniquities; H5766 they accomplish H8552 a diligent H2664 search: H2665 both the inward H7130 thought of every one H376 of them, and the heart, H3820 is deep. H6013

Commentary on Luke 23 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 23
This chapter carries on and concludes the history of Christ's sufferings and death. We have here,
Luk 23:1-12
Our Lord Jesus was condemned as a blasphemer in the spiritual court, but it was the most impotent malice that could be that this court was actuated by; for, when they had condemned him, they knew they could not put him to death, and therefore took another course.
Luk 23:13-25
We have here the blessed Jesus run down by the mob, and hurried to the cross in the storm of a popular noise and tumult, raised by the malice and artifice of the chief priests, as agents for the prince of the power of the air.
Luk 23:26-31
We have here the blessed Jesus, the Lamb of God, led as a lamb to the slaughter, to the sacrifice. It is strange with what expedition they went through his trial; how they could do so much work in such a little time, though they had so many great men to deal with, attendance on whom is usually a work of time. He was brought before the chief priests at break of day (ch. 22:66), after that to Pilate, then to Herod, then to Pilate again; and there seems to have been a long struggle between Pilate and the people about him. He was scourged, and crowned with thorns and contumeliously used, and all this was done in four or five hours' time, or six at most, for he was crucified between nine o'clock and twelve. Christ's persecutors resolve to lose no time, for fear lest his friends at the other end of the town should get notice of what they were doing, and should rise to rescue him. Never any one was so chased out of the world as Christ was, but so he himself said, Yet a little while and ye shall not see me; a very little while indeed. Now as they led him away to death we find,
Luk 23:32-43
In these verses we have,
Luk 23:44-49
In these verses we have three things:-
Luk 23:50-56
We have here an account of Christ's burial; for he must be brought not only to death, but to the dust of death (Ps. 22:15), according to the sentence (Gen. 3:19), To the dust thou shalt return. Observe,
