3 And G1161 Pilate G4091 asked G1905 him, G846 saying, G3004 Art G1488 thou G4771 the King G935 of the Jews? G2453 And G1161 he answered G611 him G846 and said, G5346 Thou G4771 sayest G3004 it.
He G3778 shall be G2071 great, G3173 and G2532 shall be called G2564 the Son G5207 of the Highest: G5310 and G2532 the Lord G2962 God G2316 shall give G1325 unto him G846 the throne G2362 of his G846 father G3962 David: G1138 And G2532 he shall reign G936 over G1909 the house G3624 of Jacob G2384 for G1519 ever; G165 and G2532 of his G846 kingdom G932 there shall be G2071 no G3756 end. G5056
Saying, G3004 Blessed G2127 be the King G935 that cometh G2064 in G1722 the name G3686 of the Lord: G2962 peace G1515 in G1722 heaven, G3772 and G2532 glory G1391 in G1722 the highest. G5310 And G2532 some G5100 of the Pharisees G5330 from G575 among the multitude G3793 said G2036 unto G4314 him, G846 Master, G1320 rebuke G2008 thy G4675 disciples. G3101 And G2532 he answered G611 and said G2036 unto them, G846 I tell G3004 you G5213 that, G3754 if G1437 these G3778 should hold their peace, G4623 the stones G3037 would immediately cry out. G2896
Then G3767 Pilate G4091 entered G1525 into G1519 the judgment hall G4232 again, G3825 and G2532 called G5455 Jesus, G2424 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 Art G1488 thou G4771 the King G935 of the Jews? G2453 Jesus G2424 answered G611 him, G846 Sayest G3004 thou G4771 this thing G5124 of G575 thyself, G1438 or G2228 did others G243 tell it G2036 thee G4671 of G4012 me? G1700 Pilate G4091 answered, G611 G3385 Am G1510 I G1473 a Jew? G2453 Thine own G4674 nation G1484 and G2532 the chief priests G749 have delivered G3860 thee G4571 unto me: G1698 what G5101 hast thou done? G4160 Jesus G2424 answered, G611 My G1699 kingdom G932 is G2076 not G3756 of G1537 this G5127 world: G2889 if G1487 my G1699 kingdom G932 were G2258 of G1537 this G5127 world, G2889 then would G302 my G1699 servants G5257 fight, G75 that G3363 I should G3860 not G3363 be delivered G3860 to the Jews: G2453 but G1161 now G3568 is G2076 my G1699 kingdom G932 not G3756 from hence. G1782 Pilate G4091 therefore G3767 said G2036 unto him, G846 Art G1488 thou G4771 a king G935 then? G3766 Jesus G2424 answered, G611 Thou G4771 sayest G3004 that G3754 I G1473 am G1510 a king. G935 To G1519 this G5124 end was G1080 I G1473 born, G1080 and G2532 for G1519 this G5124 cause came I G2064 into G1519 the world, G2889 that G2443 I should bear witness G3140 unto the truth. G225 Every one G3956 that is G5607 of G1537 the truth G225 heareth G191 my G3450 voice. G5456
And G1161 G2532 Pilate G4091 wrote G1125 a title, G5102 and G2532 put G5087 it on G1909 the cross. G4716 And G1161 the writing G1125 was, G2258 JESUS G2424 OF NAZARETH G3480 THE KING G935 OF THE JEWS. G2453 This G5126 title G5102 then G3767 read G314 many G4183 of the Jews: G2453 for G3754 the place G5117 where G3699 Jesus G2424 was crucified G4717 was G2258 nigh G1451 to the city: G4172 and G2532 it was G2258 written G1125 in Hebrew, G1447 and Greek, G1676 and Latin. G4515 Then G3767 said G3004 the chief priests G749 of the Jews G2453 to Pilate, G4091 Write G1125 not, G3361 The King G935 of the Jews; G2453 but G235 that G3754 he G1565 said, G2036 I am G1510 King G935 of the Jews. Commentary on Luke 23 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 23
This chapter carries on and concludes the history of Christ's sufferings and death. We have here,
Luk 23:1-12
Our Lord Jesus was condemned as a blasphemer in the spiritual court, but it was the most impotent malice that could be that this court was actuated by; for, when they had condemned him, they knew they could not put him to death, and therefore took another course.
Luk 23:13-25
We have here the blessed Jesus run down by the mob, and hurried to the cross in the storm of a popular noise and tumult, raised by the malice and artifice of the chief priests, as agents for the prince of the power of the air.
Luk 23:26-31
We have here the blessed Jesus, the Lamb of God, led as a lamb to the slaughter, to the sacrifice. It is strange with what expedition they went through his trial; how they could do so much work in such a little time, though they had so many great men to deal with, attendance on whom is usually a work of time. He was brought before the chief priests at break of day (ch. 22:66), after that to Pilate, then to Herod, then to Pilate again; and there seems to have been a long struggle between Pilate and the people about him. He was scourged, and crowned with thorns and contumeliously used, and all this was done in four or five hours' time, or six at most, for he was crucified between nine o'clock and twelve. Christ's persecutors resolve to lose no time, for fear lest his friends at the other end of the town should get notice of what they were doing, and should rise to rescue him. Never any one was so chased out of the world as Christ was, but so he himself said, Yet a little while and ye shall not see me; a very little while indeed. Now as they led him away to death we find,
Luk 23:32-43
In these verses we have,
Luk 23:44-49
In these verses we have three things:-
Luk 23:50-56
We have here an account of Christ's burial; for he must be brought not only to death, but to the dust of death (Ps. 22:15), according to the sentence (Gen. 3:19), To the dust thou shalt return. Observe,
