And G2532 straightway G2112 one G1520 of G1537 them G846 ran, G5143 and G2532 took G2983 a spunge, G4699 and G5037 filled G4130 it with vinegar, G3690 and G2532 put it on G4060 a reed, G2563 and gave G4222 him G846 to drink. G4222
They gave H5414 me also gall H7219 for my meat; H1267 and in my thirst H6772 they gave me vinegar H2558 to drink. H8248
And G1161 one G1520 ran G5143 and G2532 filled G1072 a spunge G4699 full G1072 of vinegar, G3690 and G5037 put it on G4060 a reed, G2563 and gave G4222 him G846 to drink, G4222 saying, G3004 Let alone; G863 let us see G1492 whether G1487 Elias G2243 will come G2064 to take G2507 him G846 down. G2507
And G2532 when they had platted G4120 a crown G4735 of G1537 thorns, G173 they put G2007 it upon G1909 his G846 head, G2776 and G2532 a reed G2563 in G1909 his G846 right hand: G1188 and G2532 they bowed the knee G1120 before G1715 him, G846 and mocked G1702 him, G846 saying, G3004 Hail, G5463 King G935 of the Jews! G2453 And G2532 they spit G1716 upon G1519 him, G846 and took G2983 the reed, G2563 and G2532 smote G5180 him G846 on G1519 the head. G2776
They gave G1325 him G846 vinegar G3690 to drink G4095 mingled G3396 with G3326 gall: G5521 and G2532 when he had tasted G1089 thereof, he would G2309 not G3756 drink. G4095
And G2532 they smote G5180 him G846 on the head G2776 with a reed, G2563 and G2532 did spit G1716 upon him, G846 and G2532 bowing G5087 their knees G1119 worshipped G4352 him. G846 And G2532 when G3753 they had mocked G1702 him, G846 they took off G1562 the purple G4209 from him, G846 and G2532 put G1746 his own G2398 clothes G2440 on G1746 him, G846 and G2532 led G1806 him G846 out G1806 to G2443 crucify G4717 him. After G3326 this, G5124 Jesus G2424 knowing G1492 that G3754 all things G3956 were G5055 now G2235 accomplished, G5055 that G2443 the scripture G1124 might be fulfilled, G5048 saith, G3004 I thirst. G1372 Now G3767 there was set G2749 a vessel G4632 full G3324 of vinegar: G3690 and G1161 they filled G4130 a spunge G4699 with vinegar, G3690 and G2532 put it upon G4060 hyssop, G5301 and put G4374 it to his G846 mouth. Commentary on Luke 23 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 23
This chapter carries on and concludes the history of Christ's sufferings and death. We have here,
Luk 23:1-12
Our Lord Jesus was condemned as a blasphemer in the spiritual court, but it was the most impotent malice that could be that this court was actuated by; for, when they had condemned him, they knew they could not put him to death, and therefore took another course.
Luk 23:13-25
We have here the blessed Jesus run down by the mob, and hurried to the cross in the storm of a popular noise and tumult, raised by the malice and artifice of the chief priests, as agents for the prince of the power of the air.
Luk 23:26-31
We have here the blessed Jesus, the Lamb of God, led as a lamb to the slaughter, to the sacrifice. It is strange with what expedition they went through his trial; how they could do so much work in such a little time, though they had so many great men to deal with, attendance on whom is usually a work of time. He was brought before the chief priests at break of day (ch. 22:66), after that to Pilate, then to Herod, then to Pilate again; and there seems to have been a long struggle between Pilate and the people about him. He was scourged, and crowned with thorns and contumeliously used, and all this was done in four or five hours' time, or six at most, for he was crucified between nine o'clock and twelve. Christ's persecutors resolve to lose no time, for fear lest his friends at the other end of the town should get notice of what they were doing, and should rise to rescue him. Never any one was so chased out of the world as Christ was, but so he himself said, Yet a little while and ye shall not see me; a very little while indeed. Now as they led him away to death we find,

Luk 23:44-49

Luk 23:50-56
We have here an account of Christ's burial; for he must be brought not only to death, but to the dust of death (Ps. 22:15), according to the sentence (Gen. 3:19), To the dust thou shalt return. Observe,
