5 A sower G4687 went out G1831 to sow G4687 his G846 seed: G4703 and G2532 as G1722 he G846 sowed, G4687 some G3739 G3303 fell G4098 by G3844 the way side; G3598 and G2532 it was trodden down, G2662 and G2532 the fowls G4071 of the air G3772 devoured G2719 it. G846
For G3754 if any G1536 be G2076 a hearer G202 of the word, G3056 and G2532 not G3756 a doer, G4163 he G3778 is like G1503 unto a man G435 beholding G2657 his G846 natural G1078 face G4383 in G1722 a glass: G2072 For G1063 he beholdeth G2657 himself, G1438 and G2532 goeth his way, G565 and G2532 straightway G2112 forgetteth G1950 what manner of man G3697 he was. G2258
And G2532 he spake G2980 many things G4183 unto them G846 in G1722 parables, G3850 saying, G3004 Behold, G2400 a sower G4687 went forth G1831 to sow; G4687 And G2532 when G1722 he G846 sowed, G4687 some G3739 G3303 seeds fell G4098 by G3844 the way side, G3598 and G2532 the fowls G4071 came G2064 and G2532 devoured G2719 them G846 up: G2719
Hear G191 ye G5210 therefore G3767 the parable G3850 of the sower. G4687 When any G3956 one heareth G191 the word G3056 of the kingdom, G932 and G2532 understandeth G4920 it not, G3361 then cometh G2064 the wicked G4190 one, and G2532 catcheth away G726 that which G3588 was sown G4687 in G1722 his G846 heart. G2588 This G3778 is G2076 he which received seed G4687 by G3844 the way side. G3598
Another G243 parable G3850 put he forth G3908 unto them, G846 saying, G3004 The kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 is likened G3666 unto a man G444 which sowed G4687 G4687 good G2570 seed G4690 in G1722 his G846 field: G68 But G1161 while G1722 men G444 slept, G2518 his G846 enemy G2190 came G2064 and G2532 sowed G4687 tares G2215 among G303 G3319 the wheat, G4621 and G2532 went his way. G565 But G1161 when G3753 the blade G5528 was sprung up, G985 and G2532 brought forth G4160 fruit, G2590 then G5119 appeared G5316 the tares G2215 also. G2532
And G2532 he taught G1321 them G846 many things G4183 by G1722 parables, G3850 and G2532 said G3004 unto them G846 in G1722 his G846 doctrine, G1322 Hearken; G191 Behold, G2400 there went out G1831 a sower G4687 to sow: G4687 And G2532 it came to pass, G1096 as G1722 he sowed, G4687 some G3739 G3303 fell G4098 by G3844 the way side, G3598 and G2532 the fowls G4071 of the air G3772 came G2064 and G2532 devoured G2719 it G846 up. G2719
And G2532 he said, G3004 So G3779 is G2076 the kingdom G932 of God, G2316 as G5613 if G1437 a man G444 should cast G906 seed G4703 into G1909 the ground; G1093 And G2532 should sleep, G2518 and G2532 rise G1453 night G3571 and G2532 day, G2250 and G2532 the seed G4703 should spring G985 and G2532 grow up, G3373 he G846 knoweth G1492 not G3756 how. G5613 For G1063 the earth G1093 bringeth forth fruit G2592 of herself; G844 first G4412 the blade, G5528 then G1534 the ear, G4719 after that G1534 the full G4134 corn G4621 in G1722 the ear. G4719 But G1161 when G3752 the fruit G2590 is brought forth, G3860 immediately G2112 he putteth in G649 the sickle, G1407 because G3754 the harvest G2326 is come. G3936
Now G1161 the parable G3850 is G2076 this: G3778 The seed G4703 is G2076 the word G3056 of God. G2316 Those G1161 by G3844 the way side G3598 are G1526 they that hear; G191 then G1534 cometh G2064 the devil, G1228 and G2532 taketh away G142 the word G3056 out of G575 their G846 hearts, G2588 lest G3363 they should believe G4100 and be saved. Commentary on Luke 8 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 8
Most of this chapter is a repetition of divers passages of Christ's preaching and miracles which we had before in Matthew and Mark; they are all of such weight, that they are worth repeating, and therefore they are repeated, that out of the mouth not only of two, but of three, witnesses every word may be established. Here is,
Luk 8:1-3
We are here told,
Luk 8:4-21
The former paragraph began with an account of Christ's industry in preaching (v. 1); this begins with an account of the people's industry in hearing, v. 4. He went into every city, to preach; so they, one would think, should have contented themselves to hear him when he came to their own city (we know those that would); but there were those here that came to him out of every city, would not stay till he came to them, nor think that they had enough when he left them, but met him when he was coming towards them, and followed him when he was going from them. Nor did he excuse himself from going to the cities with this, that there were some from the cities that came to him; for, though there were, yet the most had not zeal enough to bring them to him, and therefore such is his wonderful condescension that he will go to them; for he is found of those that sought him not, Isa. 65:1.
Here was, it seems, a vast concourse, much people were gathered together, abundance of fish to cast their net among; and he was as ready and willing to teach as they were to be taught. Now in these verses we have,
Now from the parable itself, and the explication of it, observe,
Luk 8:22-39
We have here two illustrious proofs of the power of our Lord Jesus which we had before-his power over the winds, and his power over the devils. See Mk. 4 and 5.
We may learn a great deal out of this story concerning this world of infernal, malignant spirits, which, though not working now ordinarily in the same way as here, yet we are all concerned at all times to stand upon our guard against.
Let us now see what was the effect of this miracle of casting the legion of devils out of this man.
Luk 8:40-56
Christ was driven away by the Gadarenes; they were weary of him, and willing to be rid of him. But when he had crossed the water, and returned to the Galileans, they gladly received him, wished and waited for his return, and welcomed him with all their hearts when he did return, v. 40. If some will not accept the favours Christ offers them, others will. If the Gadarenes be not gathered, yet there are many among whom Christ shall be glorious. When Christ had done his work on the other side of the water he returned, and found work to do in the place whence he came, fresh work. They that will lay out themselves to do good shall never want occasion for it. The needy you have always with you.
We have here two miracles interwoven, as they were in Matthew and Mark-the raising of Jairus's daughter to life, and the cure of the woman that had an issue of blood, as he was going in a crowd to Jairus's house. We have here,
