13 But G1161 he said G2036 unto G4314 them, G846 Give G1325 ye G5210 them G846 to eat. G5315 And G1161 they said, G2036 We G2254 have no G3756 G1526 more G4119 but G2228 five G4002 loaves G740 and G2532 two G1417 fishes; G2486 except G1509 we G2249 should go G4198 and buy G59 meat G1033 for G1519 all G3956 this G5126 people. G2992
And there came H935 a man H376 from Baalshalisha, H1190 and brought H935 the man H376 of God H430 bread H3899 of the firstfruits, H1061 twenty H6242 loaves H3899 of barley, H8184 and full ears of corn H3759 in the husk H6861 thereof. And he said, H559 Give H5414 unto the people, H5971 that they may eat. H398 And his servitor H8334 said, H559 What, should I set H5414 this before H6440 an hundred H3967 men? H376 He said again, H559 Give H5414 the people, H5971 that they may eat: H398 for thus saith H559 the LORD, H3068 They shall eat, H398 and shall leave H3498 thereof.
And Moses H4872 said, H559 The people, H5971 among H7130 whom I am, are six H8337 hundred H3967 thousand H505 footmen; H7273 and thou hast said, H559 I will give H5414 them flesh, H1320 that they may eat H398 a whole H3117 month. H2320 Shall the flocks H6629 and the herds H1241 be slain H7819 for them, to suffice H4672 them? or shall all the fish H1709 of the sea H3220 be gathered together H622 for them, to suffice H4672 them? And the LORD H3068 said H559 unto Moses, H4872 Is the LORD'S H3068 hand H3027 waxed short? H7114 thou shalt see H7200 now whether my word H1697 shall come to pass H7136 unto thee or not.
There is H3426 that scattereth, H6340 and yet increaseth; H3254 and there is that withholdeth H2820 more than is meet, H3476 but it tendeth to poverty. H4270 The liberal H1293 soul H5315 shall be made fat: H1878 and he that watereth H7301 shall be watered H3384 also himself.
But G1161 Jesus G2424 said G2036 unto them, G846 They need G5532 not G3756 depart; G565 G2192 give G1325 ye G5210 them G846 to eat G5315 . And G1161 they say G3004 unto him, G846 We have G2192 here G5602 but G3756 G1508 five G4002 loaves, G740 and G2532 two G1417 fishes. G2486
He answered G611 and G1161 said G2036 unto them, G846 Give G1325 ye G5210 them G846 to eat. G5315 And G2532 they say G3004 unto him, G846 Shall we go G565 and buy G59 two hundred G1250 pennyworth G1220 of bread, G740 and G2532 give G1325 them G846 to eat? G5315 G1161 He saith G3004 unto them, G846 How many G4214 loaves G740 have ye? G2192 go G5217 and G2532 see. G1492 And G2532 when they knew, G1097 they say, G3004 Five, G4002 and G2532 two G1417 fishes. G2486
When Jesus G2424 then G3767 lifted up G1869 his eyes, G3788 and G2532 saw G2300 G3754 a great G4183 company G3793 come G2064 unto G4314 him, G846 he saith G3004 unto G4314 Philip, G5376 Whence G4159 shall we buy G59 bread, G740 that G2443 these G3778 may eat? G5315 And G1161 this G5124 he said G3004 to prove G3985 him: G846 for G1063 he himself G846 knew G1492 what G5101 he would G3195 do. G4160 Philip G5376 answered G611 him, G846 Two hundred G1250 pennyworth G1220 of bread G740 is G714 not G3756 sufficient G714 for them, G846 that G2443 every one G1538 of them G846 may take G2983 a G5100 little. G1024 One G1520 of G1537 his G846 disciples, G3101 Andrew, G406 Simon G4613 Peter's G4074 brother, G80 saith G3004 unto him, G846 There is G2076 a G1520 lad G3808 here, G5602 which G3739 hath G2192 five G4002 barley G2916 loaves, G740 and G2532 two G1417 small fishes: G3795 but G235 what G5101 are G2076 they G5023 among G1519 so many? Commentary on Luke 9 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 9
In this chapter we have,
Luk 9:1-9
We have here,
Luk 9:10-17
We have here,
Luk 9:18-27
In these verses, we have Christ discoursing with his disciples about the great things that pertained to the kingdom of God; and one circumstance of this discourse is taken notice of here which we had not in the other evangelists-that Christ was alone praying, and his disciples with him, when he entered into this discourse, v. 18. Observe,
Luk 9:28-36
We have here the narrative of Christ's transfiguration, which was designed for a specimen of that glory of his in which he will come to judge the world, of which he had lately been speaking, and, consequently, an encouragement to his disciples to suffer for him, and never to be ashamed of him. We had this account before in Matthew and Mark, and it is well worthy to be repeated to us, and reconsidered by us, for the confirmation of our faith in the Lord Jesus, as the brightness of his Father's glory and the light of the world, for the filling of our minds with high and honourable thoughts of him, notwithstanding his being clothed with a body, and giving us some idea of the glory which he entered into at his ascension, and in which he now appears within the veil, and for the raising and encouraging of our hopes and expectations concerning the glory reserved for all believers in the future state.
Luk 9:37-42
This passage of story in Matthew and Mark follows immediately upon that of Christ's transfiguration, and his discourse with his disciples after it; but here it is said to be on the next day, as they were coming down from the hill, which confirms the conjecture that Christ was transfigured in the night, and, it should seem, though they did not make tabernacles as Peter proposed, yet they found some shelter to repose themselves in all night, for it was not till next day that they came down from the hill, and then he found things in some disorder among his disciples, though not so bad as Moses did when he came down from the mount. When wise and good men are in their beloved retirements, they would do well to consider whether they are not wanted in their public stations.
In this narrative here, observe,
Luk 9:43-50
We may observe here,
Luk 9:51-56
This passage of story we have not in any other of the evangelists, and it seems to come in here for the sake of its affinity with that next before, for in this also Christ rebuked his disciples, because they envied for his sake. There, under colour of zeal for Christ, they were for silencing and restraining separatists: here, under the same colour, they were for putting infidels to death; and, as for that, so for this also, Christ reprimanded them, for a spirit of bigotry and persecution is directly contrary to the spirit of Christ and Christianity. Observe here,
Luk 9:57-62
We have here an account of three several persons that offered themselves to follow Christ, and the answers that Christ gave to each of them. The two former we had an account of in Mt. 19:21.
We may look upon this,
