50 And G2532 Jesus G2424 said G2036 unto G4314 him, G846 Forbid G2967 him not: G3361 for G1063 he G3739 that is G2076 not G3756 against G2596 us G2257 is G2076 for G5228 us. G2257
He that is G5607 not G3361 with G3326 me G1700 is G2076 against G2596 me; G1700 and G2532 he that gathereth G4863 not G3361 with G3326 me G1700 scattereth abroad. G4650
He that is G5607 not G3361 with G3326 me G1700 is G2076 against G2596 me: G1700 and G2532 he that gathereth G4863 not G3361 with G3326 me G1700 scattereth. G4650
Some G5100 indeed G3303 preach G2784 Christ G5547 even G2532 of G1223 envy G5355 and G2532 strife; G2054 and G1161 some G5100 also G2532 of G1223 good will: G2107 The one G3303 preach G2605 Christ G5547 of G1537 contention, G2052 not G3756 sincerely, G55 supposing G3633 to add G2018 affliction G2347 to my G3450 bonds: G1199 But G1161 the other of G1537 love, G26 knowing G1492 that G3754 I am set G2749 for G1519 the defence G627 of the gospel. G2098 What G5101 then? G1063 notwithstanding, G4133 every G3956 way, G5158 whether G1535 in pretence, G4392 or G1535 in truth, G225 Christ G5547 is preached; G2605 and G2532 I G5463 therein G1722 G5129 do rejoice, G5463 yea, G235 and G2532 will rejoice. G5463
And the men H582 took H3947 of their victuals, H6718 and asked H7592 not counsel at the mouth H6310 of the LORD. H3068
Trust H982 in the LORD H3068 with all thine heart; H3820 and lean H8172 not unto thine own understanding. H998 In all thy ways H1870 acknowledge H3045 him, and he shall direct H3474 thy paths. H734
G1161 He said G5346 unto them, G846 An enemy G2190 G444 hath done G4160 this. G5124 G1161 The servants G1401 said G2036 unto him, G846 Wilt thou G2309 then G3767 that we go G565 and gather G4816 them G846 up? G4816 But G1161 he said, G5346 Nay; G3756 lest G3379 while ye gather up G4816 the tares, G2215 ye root up G1610 also the wheat G4621 with G260 them. G846 Let G863 both G297 grow together G4885 until G3360 the harvest: G2326 and G2532 in G1722 the time G2540 of harvest G2326 I will say G2046 to the reapers, G2327 Gather ye together G4816 first G4412 the tares, G2215 and G2532 bind G1210 them G846 in G1519 bundles G1197 to G4314 burn G2618 them: G846 but G1161 gather G4863 the wheat G4621 into G1519 my G3450 barn. G596
And G1161 when they G846 were come G2064 to G1519 Capernaum, G2584 they that received G2983 tribute G1323 money came G4334 to Peter, G4074 and G2532 said, G2036 Doth G5055 not G3756 your G5216 master G1320 pay G5055 tribute? G1323
Peter G4074 saith G3004 unto him, G846 Of G575 strangers. G245 Jesus G2424 saith G5346 unto him, G846 Then G686 are G1526 the children G5207 free. G1658
No G3762 servant G3610 can G1410 serve G1398 two G1417 masters: G2962 for G1063 either G2228 he will hate G3404 the one, G1520 and G2532 love G25 the other; G2087 or else G2228 he will hold G472 to the one, G1520 and G2532 despise G2706 the other. G2087 Ye cannot G3756 G1410 serve G1398 God G2316 and G2532 mammon. G3126
Wherefore G1352 I give G1107 you G5213 to understand, G1107 that G3754 no man G3762 speaking G2980 by G1722 the Spirit G4151 of God G2316 calleth G3004 Jesus G2424 accursed: G331 and G2532 that no man G3762 can G1410 say G2036 that Jesus G2424 is the Lord, G2962 but G1508 by G1722 the Holy G40 Ghost. Commentary on Luke 9 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 9
In this chapter we have,
Luk 9:1-9
We have here,
Luk 9:10-17
We have here,
Luk 9:18-27
In these verses, we have Christ discoursing with his disciples about the great things that pertained to the kingdom of God; and one circumstance of this discourse is taken notice of here which we had not in the other evangelists-that Christ was alone praying, and his disciples with him, when he entered into this discourse, v. 18. Observe,
Luk 9:28-36
We have here the narrative of Christ's transfiguration, which was designed for a specimen of that glory of his in which he will come to judge the world, of which he had lately been speaking, and, consequently, an encouragement to his disciples to suffer for him, and never to be ashamed of him. We had this account before in Matthew and Mark, and it is well worthy to be repeated to us, and reconsidered by us, for the confirmation of our faith in the Lord Jesus, as the brightness of his Father's glory and the light of the world, for the filling of our minds with high and honourable thoughts of him, notwithstanding his being clothed with a body, and giving us some idea of the glory which he entered into at his ascension, and in which he now appears within the veil, and for the raising and encouraging of our hopes and expectations concerning the glory reserved for all believers in the future state.
Luk 9:37-42
This passage of story in Matthew and Mark follows immediately upon that of Christ's transfiguration, and his discourse with his disciples after it; but here it is said to be on the next day, as they were coming down from the hill, which confirms the conjecture that Christ was transfigured in the night, and, it should seem, though they did not make tabernacles as Peter proposed, yet they found some shelter to repose themselves in all night, for it was not till next day that they came down from the hill, and then he found things in some disorder among his disciples, though not so bad as Moses did when he came down from the mount. When wise and good men are in their beloved retirements, they would do well to consider whether they are not wanted in their public stations.
In this narrative here, observe,
Luk 9:43-50
We may observe here,
Luk 9:51-56
This passage of story we have not in any other of the evangelists, and it seems to come in here for the sake of its affinity with that next before, for in this also Christ rebuked his disciples, because they envied for his sake. There, under colour of zeal for Christ, they were for silencing and restraining separatists: here, under the same colour, they were for putting infidels to death; and, as for that, so for this also, Christ reprimanded them, for a spirit of bigotry and persecution is directly contrary to the spirit of Christ and Christianity. Observe here,
Luk 9:57-62
We have here an account of three several persons that offered themselves to follow Christ, and the answers that Christ gave to each of them. The two former we had an account of in Mt. 19:21.
We may look upon this,
Observe,
