51 And G1161 it came to pass, G1096 when G1722 the time G2250 was come G4845 that he G846 should be received up, G354 G2532 he G846 stedfastly set G4741 his G846 face G4383 to go G4198 to G1519 Jerusalem, G2419
So G3303 then G3767 after G3326 the Lord G2962 had spoken G2980 unto them, G846 he was received up G353 into G1519 heaven, G3772 and G2532 sat G2523 on G1537 the right hand G1188 of God. G2316
And G2532 when he had thus G5023 spoken, G2036 he went G4198 before, G1715 ascending up G305 to G1519 Jerusalem. G2414
Then G1161 he took G3880 unto him the twelve, G1427 and said G2036 unto G4314 them, G846 Behold, G2400 we go up G305 to G1519 Jerusalem, G2414 and G2532 all things G3956 that are written G1125 by G1223 the prophets G4396 concerning the Son G5207 of man G444 shall be accomplished. G5055
And G2532 it came to pass, G1096 as G1722 he G846 went G4198 to G1519 Jerusalem, G2419 that G2532 he G846 passed G1330 through G1223 the midst G3319 of Samaria G4540 and G2532 Galilee. G1056
And G2532 he went G1279 through G2596 the cities G4172 and G2532 villages, G2968 teaching, G1321 and G2532 journeying G4160 G4197 toward G1519 Jerusalem. G2419
And G2532 now, G3568 behold, G2400 I G1473 go G4198 bound G1210 in the spirit G4151 unto G1519 Jerusalem, G2419 not G3361 knowing G1492 the things that shall befall G4876 me G3427 there: G1722 G846 Save G4133 that G3754 the Holy G40 Ghost G4151 witnesseth G1263 in every G2596 city, G4172 saying G3004 that G3754 bonds G1199 and G2532 afflictions G2347 abide G3306 me. G3165 But G235 none G3762 of these things G3056 move me, G4160 neither G3761 count I G2192 my G3450 life G5590 dear G5093 unto myself, G1683 so G5613 that I might finish G5048 my G3450 course G1408 with G3326 joy, G5479 and G2532 the ministry, G1248 which G3739 I have received G2983 of G3844 the Lord G2962 Jesus, G2424 to testify G1263 the gospel G2098 of the grace G5485 of God. G2316
Looking G872 unto G1519 Jesus G2424 the author G747 and G2532 finisher G5051 of our faith; G4102 who G3739 for G473 the joy G5479 that was set before G4295 him G846 endured G5278 the cross, G4716 despising G2706 the shame, G152 and G5037 is set down G2523 at G1722 the right hand G1188 of the throne G2362 of God. G2316
Whither G3699 the forerunner G4274 is G1525 for G5228 us G2257 entered, G1525 even Jesus, G2424 made G1096 an high priest G749 for G1519 ever G165 after G2596 the order G5010 of Melchisedec. G3198
And G2532 without controversy G3672 great G3173 is G2076 the mystery G3466 of godliness: G2150 God G2316 was manifest G5319 in G1722 the flesh, G4561 justified G1344 in G1722 the Spirit, G4151 seen G3700 of angels, G32 preached G2784 unto G1722 the Gentiles, G1484 believed on G4100 in G1722 the world, G2889 received up G353 into G1722 glory. G1391
I press G1377 toward G2596 the mark G4649 for G1909 the prize G1017 of the high G507 calling G2821 of God G2316 in G1722 Christ G5547 Jesus. G2424
Wherefore G1352 he saith, G3004 When he ascended G305 up G1519 on high, G5311 he led captivity G162 captive, G161 and G2532 gave G1325 gifts G1390 unto men. G444 (Now G1161 that he ascended, G305 what G5101 is it G2076 but G1508 that G3754 he G2597 also G2532 descended G2597 first G4412 into G1519 the lower G2737 parts G3313 of the earth? G1093 He G846 that descended G2597 is G2076 the same also G2532 that ascended up G305 far above G5231 all G3956 heavens, G3772 that G2443 he might fill G4137 all things.) G3956 And G2532 he G846 gave G1325 some, G3303 apostles; G652 and G1161 some, prophets; G4396 and G1161 some, evangelists; G2099 and G1161 some, pastors G4166 and G2532 teachers; G1320
And G2532 when he was come G2064 unto G4314 us, G2248 G2532 he took G142 Paul's G3972 girdle, G2223 and G5037 bound G1210 his own G846 hands G5495 and G2532 feet, G4228 and said, G2036 Thus G3592 saith G3004 the Holy G40 Ghost, G4151 So G3779 shall G1210 the Jews G2453 at G1722 Jerusalem G2419 bind G1210 the man G435 that G3739 owneth G2076 this G3778 girdle, G2223 and G2532 shall deliver G3860 him into G1519 the hands G5495 of the Gentiles. G1484 And G1161 when G5613 we heard G191 these things, G5023 both G5037 we, G2249 and G2532 they of that place, G1786 besought G3870 him G846 not G3361 to go up G305 to G1519 Jerusalem. G2419 Then G1161 Paul G3972 answered, G611 What G5101 mean ye G4160 to weep G2799 and G2532 to break G4919 mine G3450 heart? G2588 for G1063 I G1473 am G2192 ready G2093 not G3756 to be bound G1210 only, G3440 but G2532 also G235 to die G599 at G1519 Jerusalem G2419 for G5228 the name G3686 of the Lord G2962 Jesus. G2424 And G1161 when he G846 would G3982 not G3361 be persuaded, G3982 we ceased, G2270 saying, G2036 The will G2307 of the Lord G2962 be done. G1096
And it came to pass, when the LORD H3068 would take up H5927 Elijah H452 into heaven H8064 by a whirlwind, H5591 that Elijah H452 went H3212 with Elisha H477 from Gilgal. H1537 And Elijah H452 said H559 unto Elisha, H477 Tarry H3427 here, I pray thee; for the LORD H3068 hath sent H7971 me to Bethel. H1008 And Elisha H477 said H559 unto him, As the LORD H3068 liveth, H2416 and as thy soul H5315 liveth, H2416 I will not leave H5800 thee. So they went down H3381 to Bethel. H1008 And the sons H1121 of the prophets H5030 that were at Bethel H1008 came forth H3318 to Elisha, H477 and said H559 unto him, Knowest H3045 thou that the LORD H3068 will take away H3947 thy master H113 from thy head H7218 to day? H3117 And he said, H559 Yea, I know H3045 it; hold ye your peace. H2814
Until G891 the day G2250 in which G3739 he was taken up, G353 after that he through G1223 the Holy G40 Ghost G4151 had given commandments G1781 unto the apostles G652 whom G3739 he had chosen: G1586
And G2532 now G3765 I am G1510 no more G3765 in G1722 the world, G2889 but G2532 these G3778 are G1526 in G1722 the world, G2889 and G2532 I G1473 come G2064 to G4314 thee. G4571 Holy G40 Father, G3962 keep G5083 through G1722 thine own G4675 name G3686 those G846 whom G3739 thou hast given G1325 me, G3427 that G2443 they may be G5600 one, G1520 as G2531 we G2249 are.
But G1161 now G3568 I go my way G5217 to G4314 him that sent G3992 me; G3165 and G2532 none G3762 of G1537 you G5216 asketh G2065 me, G3165 Whither G4226 goest thou? G5217
Now G1161 before G4253 the feast G1859 of the passover, G3957 when Jesus G2424 knew G1492 that G3754 his G846 hour G5610 was come G2064 that G2443 he should depart G3327 out of G1537 this G5127 world G2889 unto G4314 the Father, G3962 having loved G25 his own G2398 which G3588 were in G1722 the world, G2889 he loved G25 them G846 unto G1519 the end. G5056
And G2532 it came to pass, G1096 while G1722 he G846 blessed G2127 them, G846 he was parted G1339 from G575 them, G846 and G2532 carried up G399 into G1519 heaven. G3772
And G1161 as they G846 heard G191 these things, G5023 he added G4369 and spake G2036 a parable, G3850 because G1223 he G846 was G1511 nigh G1451 to Jerusalem, G2419 and G2532 because they G846 thought G1380 that G3754 the kingdom G932 of God G2316 should G3195 immediately G3916 appear. G398
The Lord H136 GOD H3069 hath opened H6605 mine ear, H241 and I was not rebellious, H4784 neither turned away H5472 back. H268 I gave H5414 my back H1460 to the smiters, H5221 and my cheeks H3895 to them that plucked off H4803 the hair: I hid H5641 not my face H6440 from shame H3639 and spitting. H7536 For the Lord H136 GOD H3069 will help H5826 me; therefore shall I not be confounded: H3637 therefore have I set H7760 my face H6440 like a flint, H2496 and I know H3045 that I shall not be ashamed. H954 He is near H7138 that justifieth H6663 me; who will contend H7378 with me? let us stand H5975 together: H3162 who is mine adversary? H1167 H4941 let him come near H5066 to me. Behold, the Lord H136 GOD H3069 will help H5826 me; who is he that shall condemn H7561 me? lo, they all shall wax old H1086 as a garment; H899 the moth H6211 shall eat them up. H398
And it came to pass, as they still H1980 went on, H1980 and talked, H1696 that, behold, there appeared a chariot H7393 of fire, H784 and horses H5483 of fire, H784 and parted H6504 them both H8147 asunder; H996 and Elijah H452 went up H5927 by a whirlwind H5591 into heaven. H8064

Commentary on Luke 9 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 9
In this chapter we have,
Luk 9:1-9
We have here,
Luk 9:10-17
We have here,
Luk 9:18-27
In these verses, we have Christ discoursing with his disciples about the great things that pertained to the kingdom of God; and one circumstance of this discourse is taken notice of here which we had not in the other evangelists-that Christ was alone praying, and his disciples with him, when he entered into this discourse, v. 18. Observe,
Luk 9:28-36
We have here the narrative of Christ's transfiguration, which was designed for a specimen of that glory of his in which he will come to judge the world, of which he had lately been speaking, and, consequently, an encouragement to his disciples to suffer for him, and never to be ashamed of him. We had this account before in Matthew and Mark, and it is well worthy to be repeated to us, and reconsidered by us, for the confirmation of our faith in the Lord Jesus, as the brightness of his Father's glory and the light of the world, for the filling of our minds with high and honourable thoughts of him, notwithstanding his being clothed with a body, and giving us some idea of the glory which he entered into at his ascension, and in which he now appears within the veil, and for the raising and encouraging of our hopes and expectations concerning the glory reserved for all believers in the future state.
Luk 9:37-42
This passage of story in Matthew and Mark follows immediately upon that of Christ's transfiguration, and his discourse with his disciples after it; but here it is said to be on the next day, as they were coming down from the hill, which confirms the conjecture that Christ was transfigured in the night, and, it should seem, though they did not make tabernacles as Peter proposed, yet they found some shelter to repose themselves in all night, for it was not till next day that they came down from the hill, and then he found things in some disorder among his disciples, though not so bad as Moses did when he came down from the mount. When wise and good men are in their beloved retirements, they would do well to consider whether they are not wanted in their public stations.
In this narrative here, observe,
Luk 9:43-50
We may observe here,
Luk 9:51-56
This passage of story we have not in any other of the evangelists, and it seems to come in here for the sake of its affinity with that next before, for in this also Christ rebuked his disciples, because they envied for his sake. There, under colour of zeal for Christ, they were for silencing and restraining separatists: here, under the same colour, they were for putting infidels to death; and, as for that, so for this also, Christ reprimanded them, for a spirit of bigotry and persecution is directly contrary to the spirit of Christ and Christianity. Observe here,
Luk 9:57-62
We have here an account of three several persons that offered themselves to follow Christ, and the answers that Christ gave to each of them. The two former we had an account of in Mt. 19:21.
We may look upon this,
Observe,
