3 Who G3739 had G2192 his dwelling G2731 among G1722 the tombs; G3419 and G2532 no man G3762 could G1410 bind G1210 him, G846 no, not G3777 with chains: G254
And they shall drive H2957 thee from H4481 men, H606 and thy dwelling H4070 shall be with H5974 the beasts H2423 of the field: H1251 they shall make thee to eat H2939 grass H6211 as oxen, H8450 and seven H7655 times H5732 shall pass H2499 over H5922 thee, until H5705 thou know H3046 that the most High H5943 ruleth H7990 in the kingdom H4437 of men, H606 and giveth H5415 it to whomsoever H4479 he will. H6634 The same hour H8160 was the thing H4406 fulfilled H5487 upon H5922 Nebuchadnezzar: H5020 and he was driven H2957 from H4481 men, H606 and did eat H399 grass H6211 as oxen, H8450 and his body H1655 was wet H6647 with the dew H2920 of heaven, H8065 till H5705 his hairs H8177 were grown H7236 like eagles' H5403 feathers, and his nails H2953 like birds' H6853 claws.
And G2532 wheresoever G3699 G302 he taketh G2638 him, G846 he teareth G4486 him: G846 and G2532 he foameth, G875 and G2532 gnasheth G5149 with his G846 teeth, G3599 and G2532 pineth away: G3583 and G2532 I spake G2036 to thy G4675 disciples G3101 that G2443 they should cast G1544 him G846 out; G1544 and G2532 they could G2480 not. G3756 He answereth G611 him, G846 and G1161 saith, G3004 O G5599 faithless G571 generation, G1074 how long G2193 G4219 shall I be G2071 with G4314 you? G5209 how long G2193 G4219 shall I suffer G430 you? G5216 bring G5342 him G846 unto G4314 me. G3165 And G2532 they brought G5342 him G846 unto G4314 him: G846 and G2532 when he saw G1492 him, G846 straightway G2112 the spirit G4151 tare G4682 him; G846 and G2532 he fell G4098 on G1909 the ground, G1093 and wallowed G2947 foaming. G875 And G2532 he asked G1905 his G846 father, G3962 How long G4214 is it G2076 ago G5550 since G5613 this G5124 came G1096 unto him? G846 And G1161 he said, G2036 Of a child. G3812 And G2532 ofttimes G4178 it hath cast G906 him G846 into G2532 G1519 the fire, G4442 and G2532 into G1519 the waters, G5204 to G2443 destroy G622 him: G846 but G235 if G1536 thou canst G1410 do any thing, G1536 have compassion G4697 on G1909 us, G2248 and help G997 us. Commentary on Mark 5 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 5
In this chapter, we have,
These three miracles we had the story of before (Mt. 8:28, etc. and Mt. 9:18, etc.) but more fully related here.
Mar 5:1-20
We have here an instance of Christ's dispossessing the strong man armed, and disposing of him as he pleased, to make it appear that he was stronger than he. This he did when he was come to the other side, whither he went through a storm; his business there was to rescue this poor creature out of the hands of Satan, and when he had done that, he returned. Thus he came from heaven to earth, and returned, in a storm, to redeem a remnant of mankind out of the hands of the devil, though but a little remnant, and did not think his pains ill bestowed.
In Matthew, they were said to be two possessed with devils; here it is said to be a man possessed with an unclean spirit. If there were two, there was one, and Mark doth not say that there was but one; so that this difference cannot give us any just offence; it is probable that one of them was much more remarkable than the other, and said what was said. Now observe here,
Mar 5:21-34
The Gadarenes having desired Christ to leave their country, he did not stay to trouble them long, but presently went by water, as he came, back to the other side (v. 21), and there much people gathered to him. Note, If there be some that reject Christ, yet there are others that receive him, and bid him welcome. A despised gospel will cross the water, and go where it will have better entertainment. Now among the many that applied themselves to him,
Mar 5:35-43
Diseases and deaths came into the world by the sin and disobedience of the first Adam; but by the grace of the second Adam both are conquered. Christ, having healed an incurable disease, here goes on to triumph over death, as in the beginning of the chapter he had triumphed over an outrageous devil.
