23 But G1161 when G3752 they persecute G1377 you G5209 in G1722 this G5026 city, G4172 flee ye G5343 into G1519 another: G243 for G1063 verily G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 Ye shall G5055 not G3364 have gone over G5055 the cities G4172 of Israel, G2474 till G2193 the Son G5207 of man G444 be G302 come. G2064
And G1161 the brethren G80 immediately G2112 sent away G1599 G5037 Paul G3972 and G2532 Silas G4609 by G1223 night G3571 unto G1519 Berea: G960 who G3748 coming G3854 thither went G549 into G1519 the synagogue G4864 of the Jews. G2453
And G1161 Saul G4569 was G2258 consenting G4909 unto his G846 death. G336 And G1161 at G1722 that G1565 time G2250 there was G1096 a great G3173 persecution G1375 against G1909 the church G1577 which G3588 was at G1722 Jerusalem; G2414 and G5037 they were G1289 all G3956 scattered abroad G1289 throughout G2596 the regions G5561 of Judaea G2449 and G2532 Samaria, G4540 except G4133 the apostles. G652
And G2532 then G5119 shall they see G3700 the Son G5207 of man G444 coming G2064 in G1722 a cloud G3507 with G3326 power G1411 and G2532 great G4183 glory. G1391
And G1161 there came thither G1904 certain Jews G2453 from G575 Antioch G490 and G2532 Iconium, G2430 who G2532 persuaded G3982 the people, G3793 and, G2532 having stoned G3034 Paul, G3972 drew G4951 him out of G1854 the city, G4172 supposing G3543 he G846 had been dead. G2348 Howbeit, G1161 as the disciples G3101 stood round about G2944 him, G846 he rose up, G450 and came G1525 into G1519 the city: G4172 and G2532 the next day G1887 he departed G1831 with G4862 Barnabas G921 to G1519 Derbe. G1191
They were ware G4894 of it, and fled G2703 unto G1519 Lystra G3082 and G2532 Derbe, G1191 cities G4172 of Lycaonia, G3071 and G2532 unto the region that lieth round about: G4066 And there G2546 they preached the gospel. G2258 G2097
But G1161 the Jews G2453 stirred up G3951 the devout G4576 and G2532 honourable G2158 women, G1135 and G2532 the chief men G4413 of the city, G4172 and G2532 raised G1892 persecution G1375 against G1909 Paul G3972 and G2532 Barnabas, G921 and G2532 expelled G1544 them G846 out of G575 their G846 coasts. G3725 But G1161 they shook off G1621 the dust G2868 of their G846 feet G4228 against G1909 them, G846 and came G2064 unto G1519 Iconium. G2430
But G1161 their G846 laying await G1917 was known G1097 of Saul. G4569 And G5037 they watched G3906 the gates G4439 day G2250 and G2532 night G3571 to G3704 kill G337 him. G846 Then G1161 the disciples G3101 took G2983 him G846 by night, G3571 and let him down G2524 G5465 by G1223 the wall G5038 in G1722 a basket. G4711
Then G3767 from G575 that G1565 day G2250 forth they took counsel together G4823 for to G2443 put G615 him G846 to death. G615 Jesus G2424 therefore G3767 walked G4043 no more G3765 openly G3954 among G1722 the Jews; G2453 but G235 went G565 thence G1564 unto G1519 a country G5561 near G1451 to the wilderness, G2048 into G1519 a city G4172 called G3004 Ephraim, G2187 and there G2546 continued G1304 with G3326 his G846 disciples. G3101
Therefore G3767 they sought G2212 again G3825 to take G4084 him: G846 but G2532 he escaped G1831 out of G1537 their G846 hand, G5495 And G2532 went away G565 again G3825 beyond G4008 Jordan G2446 into G1519 the place G5117 where G3699 John G2491 at first G4412 baptized; G907 G2258 and G2532 there G1563 he abode. G3306 And G2532 many G4183 resorted G2064 unto G4314 him, G846 and G2532 said, G3004 G3754 John G2491 did G4160 no G3303 G3762 miracle: G4592 but G1161 all things G3956 that G3745 John G2491 spake G2036 of G4012 this man G5127 were G2258 true. G227 And G2532 many G4183 believed G4100 on G1519 him G846 there. G1563
G2532 After G3326 these things G5023 Jesus G2424 walked G4043 in G1722 Galilee: G1056 for G1063 he would G2309 not G3756 walk G4043 in G1722 Jewry, G2449 because G3754 the Jews G2453 sought G2212 to kill G615 him. G846
And G1161 when they G846 were departed, G402 behold, G2400 the angel G32 of the Lord G2962 appeareth G5316 to Joseph G2501 in G2596 a dream, G3677 saying, G3004 Arise, G1453 and take G3880 the young child G3813 and G2532 his G846 mother, G3384 and G2532 flee G5343 into G1519 Egypt, G125 and G2532 be thou G2468 there G1563 until G2193 I G302 bring G2036 thee G4671 word: G2036 for G1063 Herod G2264 will G3195 seek G2212 the young child G3813 to destroy G622 him. G846
And G2532 rose up, G450 and thrust G1544 him G846 out of G1854 the city, G4172 and G2532 led G71 him G846 unto G2193 the brow G3790 of the hill G3735 whereon G1909 G3739 their G846 city G4172 was built, G3618 that G1519 they might cast G2630 him G846 down headlong. G2630 But G1161 he G846 passing G1330 through G1223 the midst G3319 of them G846 went his way, G4198 And G2532 came down G2718 to G1519 Capernaum, G2584 a city G4172 of Galilee, G1056 and G2532 taught G1321 them G846 G2258 on G1722 the sabbath days. G4521
And G2532 then G5119 shall they see G3700 the Son G5207 of man G444 coming G2064 in G1722 the clouds G3507 with G3326 great G4183 power G1411 and G2532 glory. G1391
Jesus G2424 saith G3004 unto him, G846 Thou G4771 hast said: G2036 nevertheless G4133 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 Hereafter G737 G575 shall ye see G3700 the Son G5207 of man G444 sitting G2521 on G1537 the right hand G1188 of power, G1411 and G2532 coming G2064 in G1909 the clouds G3507 of heaven. G3772
Watch G1127 therefore, G3767 for G3754 ye know G1492 neither G3756 the day G2250 nor G3761 the hour G5610 wherein G1722 G3739 the Son G5207 of man G444 cometh. G2064
But and G1161 if G1437 that G1565 evil G2556 servant G1401 shall say G2036 in G1722 his G846 heart, G2588 My G3450 lord G2962 delayeth G5549 his coming; G2064
And G2532 then G5119 shall appear G5316 the sign G4592 of the Son G5207 of man G444 in G1722 heaven: G3772 and G2532 then G5119 shall G2875 all G3956 the tribes G5443 of the earth G1093 mourn, G2875 and G2532 they shall see G3700 the Son G5207 of man G444 coming G2064 in G1909 the clouds G3507 of heaven G3772 with G3326 power G1411 and G2532 great G4183 glory. G1391
For G1063 as G5618 the lightning G796 cometh G1831 out of G575 the east, G395 and G2532 shineth G5316 even unto G2193 the west; G1424 so G3779 shall G2071 also G2532 the coming G3952 of the Son G5207 of man G444 be. G2071
Wherefore, G1223 G5124 behold, G2400 I G1473 send G649 unto G4314 you G5209 prophets, G4396 and G2532 wise men, G4680 and G2532 scribes: G1122 and G2532 some of G1537 them G846 ye shall kill G615 and G2532 crucify; G4717 and G2532 some of G1537 them G846 shall ye scourge G3146 in G1722 your G5216 synagogues, G4864 and G2532 persecute G1377 them from G575 city G4172 to G1519 city: G4172
Then G1161 the Pharisees G5330 went out, G1831 and held G2983 a council G4824 against G2596 him, G846 how G3704 they might destroy G622 him. G846 But G1161 when Jesus G2424 knew G1097 it, he withdrew himself G402 from thence: G1564 and G2532 great G4183 multitudes G3793 followed G190 him, G846 and G2532 he healed G2323 them G846 all; G3956

Commentary on Matthew 10 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 10
This chapter is an ordination sermon, which our Lord Jesus preached, when he advanced his twelve disciples to the degree and dignity of apostles. In the close of the foregoing chapter, he had stirred up them and others to pray that God would send forth labourers, and here we have an immediate answer to that prayer: while they are yet speaking he hears and performs. What we pray for, according to Christ's direction, shall be given, Now here we have,
These things, though primarily intended for direction to the apostles, are of use to all Christ's ministers, with whom, by his word, Christ, and will be always to end the world.
Mat 10:1-4
Here we are told,
Mat 10:5-15
We have here the instructions that Christ gave to his disciples, when he gave them their commission. Whether this charge was given them in a continued discourse, or the several articles of it hinted to them at several times, is not material; in this he commanded them. Jacob's blessing his sons, is called his commanding them, and with these commands Christ commanded a blessing. Observe,
Now this was the same that John the Baptist and Christ had preached before. Note, People need to have good truths pressed again and again upon them, and if they be preached and heard with new affections, they are as if they were fresh to us. Christ, in the gospel, is the same yesterday, to-day, and for ever, Heb. 13:8. Afterwards, indeed, when the Spirit was poured out, and the Christian church was formed, this kingdom of heaven came, which was now spoken of as at hand; but the kingdom of heaven must still be the subject of our preaching: now it is come, we must tell people it is come to them, and must lay before them the precepts and privileges of it; and there is a kingdom of glory yet to come, which we must speak of as at hand, and quicken people to diligence from the consideration of that.
When they had saluted the family after a godly sort, they must by the return, judge concerning the family, and proceed accordingly. Note, The eye of God is upon us, to observe what entertainment we give to good people and good ministers; if the house be worthy, let your peace come and rest upon it; if not, let it return to you, v. 13. It seems then, that after they had enquired for the most worthy (v. 11), it was possible they might light upon those that were unworthy. Note, Though it is wisdom to hearken to, yet it is folly to rely upon, common report and opinion; we ought to use a judgment of discretion, and to see with our own eyes. The wisdom of the prudent is himself to understand his own way. Now this rule is intended,
Now in this case we have here,
Mat 10:16-42
All these verses relate to the sufferings of Christ's ministers in their work, which they are here taught to expect, and prepare for; they are directed also how to bear them, and how to go on with their work in the midst of them. This part of the sermon looks further than to their present mission; for we find not that they met with any great hardships or persecutions while Christ was with them, nor were they well able to bear them; but they are here forewarned of the troubles they should meet with, when after Christ's resurrection, their commission should be enlarged, and the kingdom of heaven, which was not at hand, should be actually set up; they dreamed of nothing then, but outward pomp and power; but Christ tells them, they must expect greater sufferings than they were yet called to; that they should then be made prisoners, when they expected to be made princes. It is good to be told what troubles we may hereafter meet with, that we may provide accordingly, and may not boast, as if we had put off the harness, when we are yet but girding it on.
We have here intermixed, I. Predictions of trouble: and, II. Prescriptions of counsel and comfort, with reference to it.
He tells them what they should suffer, and from whom.
These hard things Christ's disciples must suffer,
Yes, this is soon said; but when it comes to the trial, racks and tortures, dungeons and galleys, axes and gibbets, fire and faggot, are terrible things, enough to make the stoutest heart to tremble, and to start back, especially when it is plain, that they may be avoided by a few declining steps; and therefore, to fortify us against this temptation, we have here,
