Matthew 21:25 King James Version with Strong's Concordance (STRONG)

25 The baptism G908 of John, G2491 whence G4159 was it? G2258 from G1537 heaven, G3772 or G2228 of G1537 men? G444 And G1161 they reasoned G1260 with G3844 themselves, G1438 saying, G3004 If G1437 we shall say, G2036 From G1537 heaven; G3772 he will say G2046 unto us, G2254 Why G1302 did ye G4100 not G3756 then G3767 believe G4100 him? John 12:37-43 STRONG

But G1161 though he G846 had done G4160 so many G5118 miracles G4592 before G1715 them, G846 yet they believed G4100 not G3756 on G1519 him: G846 That G2443 the saying G3056 of Esaias G2268 the prophet G4396 might be fulfilled, G4137 which G3739 he spake, G2036 Lord, G2962 who G5101 hath believed G4100 our G2257 report? G189 and G2532 to whom G5101 hath the arm G1023 of the Lord G2962 been revealed? G601 Therefore G5124 G1223 they could G1410 not G3756 believe, G4100 because G3754 that Esaias G2268 said G2036 again, G3825 He hath blinded G5186 their G846 eyes, G3788 and G2532 hardened G4456 their G846 heart; G2588 that G3363 they should G1492 not G3363 see G1492 with their eyes, G3788 nor G2532 understand G3539 with their heart, G2588 and G2532 be converted, G1994 and G2532 I should heal G2390 them. G846 These things G5023 said G2036 Esaias, G2268 when G3753 he saw G1492 his G846 glory, G1391 and G2532 spake G2980 of G4012 him. G846 Nevertheless G3676 G3305 among G1537 the chief rulers G758 also G2532 many G4183 believed G4100 on G1519 him; G846 but G235 because G1223 of the Pharisees G5330 they did G3670 not G3756 confess G3670 him, lest G3363 they should be G1096 put out of the synagogue: G656 For G1063 they loved G25 the praise G1391 of men G444 more G3123 than G2260 the praise G1391 of God. John 10:25-26 STRONG

Jesus G2424 answered G611 them, G846 I told G2036 you, G5213 and G2532 ye believed G4100 not: G3756 the works G2041 that G3739 I G1473 do G4160 in G1722 my G3450 Father's G3962 name, G3686 they G5023 bear witness G3140 of G4012 me. G1700 But G235 ye G5210 believe G4100 not, G3756 because G1063 ye are G2075 not G3756 of G1537 my G1699 sheep, G4263 as G2531 I said G2036 unto you. G5213

John 5:44-47 STRONG

How G4459 can G1410 ye G5210 believe, G4100 which receive G2983 honour G1391 one of another, G3844 G240 and G2532 seek G2212 not G3756 the honour G1391 that cometh from G3844 God G2316 only? G3441 Do G1380 not G3361 think G1380 that G3754 I G1473 will accuse G2723 you G5216 to G4314 the Father: G3962 there is G2076 one that accuseth G2723 you, G5216 even Moses, G3475 in G1519 whom G3739 ye G5210 trust. G1679 For G1063 G1487 had ye believed G4100 Moses, G3475 ye would have believed G4100 G302 me: G1698 for G1063 he G1565 wrote G1125 of G4012 me. G1700 But G1161 if G1487 ye believe G4100 not G3756 his G1565 writings, G1121 how G4459 shall ye believe G4100 my G1699 words? G4487

John 5:33-36 STRONG

Ye G5210 sent G649 unto G4314 John, G2491 and G2532 he bare witness G3140 unto the truth. G225 But G1161 I G1473 receive G2983 not G3756 testimony G3141 from G3844 man: G444 but G235 these things G5023 I say, G3004 that G2443 ye G5210 might be saved. G4982 He G1565 was G2258 a burning G2545 and G2532 a shining G5316 light: G3088 and G1161 ye G5210 were willing G2309 for G4314 a season G5610 to rejoice G21 in G1722 his G846 light. G5457 But G1161 I G1473 have G2192 greater G3187 witness G3141 than that of John: G2491 for G1063 the works G2041 which G3739 the Father G3962 hath given G1325 me G3427 to G2443 finish, G5048 G846 the same G846 works G2041 that G3739 I G1473 do, G4160 bear witness G3140 of G4012 me, G1700 that G3754 the Father G3962 hath sent G649 me. John 3:26-36 STRONG

And G2532 they came G2064 unto G4314 John, G2491 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 Rabbi, G4461 he G3739 that was G2258 with G3326 thee G4675 beyond G4008 Jordan, G2446 to whom G3739 thou G4771 barest witness, G3140 behold, G2396 the same G3778 baptizeth, G907 and G2532 all G3956 men come G2064 to G4314 him. G846 John G2491 answered G611 and G2532 said, G2036 A man G444 can G1410 G3756 receive G2983 nothing, G3762 except G3362 it be G5600 given G1325 him G846 from G1537 heaven. G3772 Ye G5210 yourselves G846 bear G3140 me G3427 witness, G3140 that G3754 I said, G2036 I G1473 am G1510 not G3756 the Christ, G5547 but G235 that G3754 I am G1510 sent G649 before G1715 him. G1565 He that hath G2192 the bride G3565 is G2076 the bridegroom: G3566 but G1161 the friend G5384 of the bridegroom, G3566 which G3588 standeth G2476 and G2532 heareth G191 him, G846 rejoiceth G5463 greatly G5479 because G1223 of the bridegroom's G3566 voice: G5456 this G3778 my G1699 joy G5479 therefore G3767 is fulfilled. G4137 He G1565 must G1163 increase, G837 but G1161 I G1691 must decrease. G1642 He that cometh G2064 from above G509 is G2076 above G1883 all: G3956 he that is G5607 of G1537 the earth G1093 is G2076 earthly, G1537 G1093 and G2532 speaketh G2980 of G1537 the earth: G1093 he that cometh G2064 from G1537 heaven G3772 is G2076 above G1883 all. G3956 And G2532 what G3739 he hath seen G3708 and G2532 heard, G191 that G5124 he testifieth; G3140 and G2532 no man G3762 receiveth G2983 his G846 testimony. G3141 He that hath received G2983 his G846 testimony G3141 hath set to his seal G4972 that G3754 God G2316 is G2076 true. G227 For G1063 he whom G3739 God G2316 hath sent G649 speaketh G2980 the words G4487 of God: G2316 for G1063 God G2316 giveth G1325 not G3756 the Spirit G4151 by G1537 measure G3358 unto him. The Father G3962 loveth G25 the Son, G5207 and G2532 hath given G1325 all things G3956 into G1722 his G846 hand. G5495 He that believeth G4100 on G1519 the Son G5207 hath G2192 everlasting G166 life: G2222 and G1161 he that believeth not G544 the Son G5207 shall G3700 not G3756 see G3700 life; G2222 but G235 the wrath G3709 of God G2316 abideth G3306 on G1909 him. G846

John 1:25-34 STRONG

And G2532 they asked G2065 him, G846 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 Why G5101 baptizest thou G907 then, G3767 if G1487 thou G4771 be G1488 not G3756 that Christ, G5547 nor G3777 Elias, G2243 neither G3777 that prophet? G4396 John G2491 answered G611 them, G846 saying, G3004 I G1473 baptize G907 with G1722 water: G5204 but G1161 there standeth one G2476 among G3319 you, G5216 whom G3739 ye G5210 know G1492 not; G3756 He G846 it is, G2076 who G3739 coming G2064 after G3694 me G3450 is preferred G1096 before G1715 me, G3450 whose G3739 G846 shoe's G5266 latchet G2438 I G1473 am G1510 not G3756 worthy G514 to G2443 unloose. G3089 These things G5023 were done G1096 in G1722 Bethabara G962 beyond G4008 Jordan, G2446 where G3699 John G2491 was G2258 baptizing. G907 The next day G1887 John G2491 seeth G991 Jesus G2424 coming G2064 unto G4314 him, G846 and G2532 saith, G3004 Behold G2396 the Lamb G286 of God, G2316 which G3588 taketh away G142 the sin G266 of the world. G2889 This G3778 is he G2076 of G4012 whom G3739 I G1473 said, G2036 After G3694 me G3450 cometh G2064 a man G435 which G3739 is preferred G1096 before G1715 me: G3450 for G3754 he was G2258 before G4413 me. G3450 And I G2504 knew G1492 him G846 not: G3756 but G235 that G2443 he should be made manifest G5319 to Israel, G2474 therefore G1223 G5124 am G2064 I G1473 come G2064 baptizing G907 with G1722 water. G5204 And G2532 John G2491 bare record, G3140 saying, G3004 G3754 I saw G2300 the Spirit G4151 descending G2597 from G1537 heaven G3772 like G5616 a dove, G4058 and G2532 it abode G3306 upon G1909 him. G846 And I G2504 knew G1492 him G846 not: G3756 but G235 he that sent G3992 me G3165 to baptize G907 with G1722 water, G5204 the same G1565 said G2036 unto me, G3427 Upon G1909 whom G3739 G302 thou shalt see G1492 the Spirit G4151 descending, G2597 and G2532 remaining G3306 on G1909 him, G846 the same G3778 is G2076 he which baptizeth G907 with G1722 the Holy G40 Ghost. G4151 And I G2504 saw, G3708 and G2532 bare record G3140 that G3754 this G3778 is G2076 the Son G5207 of God. G2316

Matthew 3:1-12 STRONG

G1161 In G1722 those G1565 days G2250 came G3854 John G2491 the Baptist, G910 preaching G2784 in G1722 the wilderness G2048 of Judaea, G2449 And G2532 saying, G3004 Repent ye: G3340 for G1063 the kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 is at hand. G1448 For G1063 this G3778 is he G2076 that was spoken G4483 of by G5259 the prophet G4396 Esaias, G2268 saying, G3004 The voice G5456 of one crying G994 in G1722 the wilderness, G2048 Prepare ye G2090 the way G3598 of the Lord, G2962 make G4160 his G846 paths G5147 straight. G2117 And G1161 the same G846 John G2491 had G2192 his G846 raiment G1742 of G575 camel's G2574 hair, G2359 and G2532 a leathern G1193 girdle G2223 about G4012 his G846 loins; G3751 and G1161 his G846 meat G5160 was G2258 locusts G200 and G2532 wild G66 honey. G3192 Then G5119 went out G1607 to G4314 him G846 Jerusalem, G2414 and G2532 all G3956 Judaea, G2449 and G2532 all G3956 the region round about G4066 Jordan, G2446 And G2532 were baptized G907 of G5259 him G846 in G1722 Jordan, G2446 confessing G1843 their G846 sins. G266 But G1161 when he saw G1492 many G4183 of the Pharisees G5330 and G2532 Sadducees G4523 come G2064 to G1909 his G846 baptism, G908 he said G2036 unto them, G846 O generation G1081 of vipers, G2191 who G5101 hath warned G5263 you G5213 to flee G5343 from G575 the wrath G3709 to come? G3195 Bring forth G4160 therefore G3767 fruits G2590 meet G514 for repentance: G3341 And G2532 think G1380 not G3361 to say G3004 within G1722 yourselves, G1438 We have G2192 Abraham G11 to our father: G3962 for G1063 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 that G3754 God G2316 is able G1410 of G1537 these G5130 stones G3037 to raise up G1453 children G5043 unto Abraham. G11 And G1161 now G2235 also G2532 the axe G513 is laid G2749 unto G4314 the root G4491 of the trees: G1186 therefore G3767 every G3956 tree G1186 which bringeth G4160 not G3361 forth G4160 good G2570 fruit G2590 is hewn down, G1581 and G2532 cast G906 into G1519 the fire. G4442 I G1473 indeed G3303 baptize G907 you G5209 with G1722 water G5204 unto G1519 repentance: G3341 but G1161 he that cometh G2064 after G3694 me G3450 is G2076 mightier than G2478 I, G3450 whose G3739 shoes G5266 I am G1510 not G3756 worthy G2425 to bear: G941 he G846 shall baptize G907 you G5209 with G1722 the Holy G40 Ghost, G4151 and G2532 with fire: G4442 Whose G3739 fan G4425 is in G1722 his G846 hand, G5495 and G2532 he will throughly purge G1245 his G846 floor, G257 and G2532 gather G4863 his G846 wheat G4621 into G1519 the garner; G596 but G1161 he will burn up G2618 the chaff G892 with unquenchable G762 fire. Luke 7:28-35 STRONG

For G1063 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 Among G1722 those that are born G1084 of women G1135 there is G2076 not G3762 a greater G3187 prophet G4396 than G3187 John G2491 the Baptist: G910 but G1161 he that is least G3398 in G1722 the kingdom G932 of God G2316 is G2076 greater than G3187 he. G846 And G2532 all G3956 the people G2992 that heard G191 him, and G2532 the publicans, G5057 justified G1344 God, G2316 being baptized G907 with the baptism G908 of John. G2491 But G1161 the Pharisees G5330 and G2532 lawyers G3544 rejected G114 the counsel G1012 of God G2316 against G1519 themselves, G1438 being G907 not G3361 baptized G907 of G5259 him. G846 And G1161 the Lord G2962 said, G2036 Whereunto G5101 then G3767 shall I liken G3666 the men G444 of this G5026 generation? G1074 and G2532 to what G5101 are they G1526 like? G3664 They are G1526 like G3664 unto children G3813 sitting G2521 in G1722 the marketplace, G58 and G2532 calling G4377 one to another, G240 and G2532 saying, G3004 We have piped G832 unto you, G5213 and G2532 ye have G3738 not G3756 danced; G3738 we have mourned G2354 to you, G5213 and G2532 ye have G2799 not G3756 wept. G2799 For G1063 John G2491 the Baptist G910 came G2064 neither G3383 eating G2068 bread G740 nor G3383 drinking G4095 wine; G3631 and G2532 ye say, G3004 He hath G2192 a devil. G1140 The Son G5207 of man G444 is come G2064 eating G2068 and G2532 drinking; G4095 and G2532 ye say, G3004 Behold G2400 a gluttonous G5314 man, G444 and G2532 a winebibber, G3630 a friend G5384 of publicans G5057 and G2532 sinners! G268 But G2532 wisdom G4678 is justified G1344 of G575 all G3956 her G846 children. G5043

Luke 3:2-20 STRONG

Annas G452 and G2532 Caiaphas G2533 being G1909 the high priests, G749 the word G4487 of God G2316 came G1096 unto G1909 John G2491 the son G5207 of Zacharias G2197 in G1722 the wilderness. G2048 And G2532 he came G2064 into G1519 all G3956 the country about G4066 Jordan, G2446 preaching G2784 the baptism G908 of repentance G3341 for G1519 the remission G859 of sins; G266 As G5613 it is written G1125 in G1722 the book G976 of the words G3056 of Esaias G2268 the prophet, G4396 saying, G3004 The voice G5456 of one crying G994 in G1722 the wilderness, G2048 Prepare ye G2090 the way G3598 of the Lord, G2962 make G4160 his G846 paths G5147 straight. G2117 Every G3956 valley G5327 shall be G2071 filled, G4137 and G2532 every G3956 mountain G3735 and G2532 hill G1015 shall be brought low; G5013 and G2532 the crooked G4646 shall be made G1519 straight, G2117 and G2532 the rough G5138 ways G3598 shall be made G1519 smooth; G3006 And G2532 all G3956 flesh G4561 shall see G3700 the salvation G4992 of God. G2316 Then G3767 said G3004 he to the multitude G3793 that came forth G1607 to be baptized G907 of G5259 him, G846 O generation G1081 of vipers, G2191 who G5101 hath warned G5263 you G5213 to flee G5343 from G575 the wrath G3709 to come? G3195 Bring forth G4160 therefore G3767 fruits G2590 worthy G514 of repentance, G3341 and G2532 begin G756 not G3361 to say G3004 within G1722 yourselves, G1438 We have G2192 Abraham G11 to our father: G3962 for G1063 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 That G3754 God G2316 is able G1410 of G1537 these G5130 stones G3037 to raise up G1453 children G5043 unto Abraham. G11 And G1161 now G2235 also G2532 the axe G513 is laid G2749 unto G4314 the root G4491 of the trees: G1186 every G3956 tree G1186 therefore G3767 which bringeth G4160 not G3361 forth G4160 good G2570 fruit G2590 is hewn down, G1581 and G2532 cast G906 into G1519 the fire. G4442 And G2532 the people G3793 asked G1905 him, G846 saying, G3004 What G5101 shall we do G4160 then? G3767 He answereth G611 and G1161 saith G3004 unto them, G846 He that hath G2192 two G1417 coats, G5509 let him impart G3330 to him that hath G2192 none; G3361 and G2532 he that hath G2192 meat, G1033 let him do G4160 likewise. G3668 Then G1161 came G2064 also G2532 publicans G5057 to be baptized, G907 and G2532 said G2036 unto G4314 him, G846 Master, G1320 what G5101 shall we do? G4160 And G1161 he said G2036 unto G4314 them, G846 Exact G4238 no G3367 more G4119 than G3844 that which is appointed G1299 you. G5213 And G1161 the soldiers G4754 likewise G2532 demanded G1905 of him, G846 saying, G3004 And G2532 what G5101 shall we G2249 do? G4160 And G2532 he said G2036 unto G4314 them, G846 Do violence G1286 to no man, G3367 neither G3366 accuse any falsely; G4811 and G2532 be content G714 with your G5216 wages. G3800 And G1161 as the people G2992 were in expectation, G4328 and G2532 all men G3956 mused G1260 in G1722 their G846 hearts G2588 of G4012 John, G2491 whether G3379 he G846 were G1498 the Christ, G5547 or not; G3379 John G2491 answered, G611 saying G3004 unto them all, G537 I G1473 indeed G3303 baptize G907 you G5209 with water; G5204 but G1161 one mightier than G2478 I G3450 cometh, G2064 the latchet G2438 of whose G3739 G846 shoes G5266 I am G1510 not G3756 worthy G2425 to unloose: G3089 he G846 shall baptize G907 you G5209 with G1722 the Holy G40 Ghost G4151 and G2532 with fire: G4442 Whose G3739 fan G4425 is in G1722 his G846 hand, G5495 and G2532 he will throughly purge G1245 his G846 floor, G257 and G2532 will gather G4863 the wheat G4621 into G1519 his G846 garner; G596 but G1161 the chaff G892 he will burn G2618 with fire G4442 unquenchable. G762 And G2532 G3767 many G4183 other G2087 things G4183 G3303 in his exhortation G3870 preached G2097 he unto the people. G2992 But G1161 Herod G2264 the tetrarch, G5076 being reproved G1651 by G5259 him G846 for G4012 Herodias G2266 his G846 brother G80 Philip's G5376 wife, G1135 and G2532 for G4012 all G3956 the evils G4190 which G3739 Herod G2264 had done, G4160 Added G4369 yet G2532 this G5124 above G1909 all, G3956 that G2532 he shut up G2623 John G2491 in G1722 prison. Luke 1:67-80 STRONG

And G2532 his G846 father G3962 Zacharias G2197 was filled G4130 with the Holy G40 Ghost, G4151 and G2532 prophesied, G4395 saying, G3004 Blessed G2128 be the Lord G2962 God G2316 of Israel; G2474 for G3754 he hath visited G1980 and G2532 redeemed G3085 his G846 people, G2992 G4160 And G2532 hath raised up G1453 an horn G2768 of salvation G4991 for us G2254 in G1722 the house G3624 of his G846 servant G3816 David; G1138 As G2531 he spake G2980 by G1223 the mouth G4750 of his G846 holy G40 prophets, G4396 which G3588 have been since G575 the world began: G165 That we should be saved G4991 from G1537 our G2257 enemies, G2190 and G2532 from G1537 the hand G5495 of all G3956 that hate G3404 us; G2248 To perform G4160 the mercy G1656 promised to G3326 our G2257 fathers, G3962 and G2532 to remember G3415 his G846 holy G40 covenant; G1242 The oath G3727 which G3739 he sware G3660 to G4314 our G2257 father G3962 Abraham, G11 That he would grant G1325 unto us, G2254 that we being delivered G4506 out of G1537 the hand G5495 of our G2257 enemies G2190 might serve G3000 him G846 without fear, G870 In G1722 holiness G3742 and G2532 righteousness G1343 before G1799 him, G846 all G3956 the days G2250 of our G2257 life. G2222 And G2532 thou, G4771 child, G3813 shalt be called G2564 the prophet G4396 of the Highest: G5310 for G1063 thou shalt go G4313 before G4253 the face G4383 of the Lord G2962 to prepare G2090 his G846 ways; G3598 To give G1325 knowledge G1108 of salvation G4991 unto his G846 people G2992 by G1722 the remission G859 of their G846 sins, G266 Through G1223 the tender G4698 mercy G1656 of our G2257 God; G2316 whereby G1722 G3739 the dayspring G395 from G1537 on high G5311 hath visited G1980 us, G2248 To give light G2014 to them that sit G2521 in G1722 darkness G4655 and G2532 in the shadow G4639 of death, G2288 to guide G2720 our G2257 feet G4228 into G1519 the way G3598 of peace. G1515 And G1161 the child G3813 grew, G837 and G2532 waxed strong G2901 in spirit, G4151 and G2532 was G2258 in G1722 the deserts G2048 till G2193 the day G2250 of his G846 shewing G323 unto G4314 Israel. Luke 1:11-17 STRONG

And G1161 there appeared G3700 unto him G846 an angel G32 of the Lord G2962 standing G2476 on G1537 the right side G1188 of the altar G2379 of incense. G2368 And G2532 when Zacharias G2197 saw G1492 him, he was troubled, G5015 and G2532 fear G5401 fell G1968 upon G1909 him. G846 But G1161 the angel G32 said G2036 unto G4314 him, G846 Fear G5399 not, G3361 Zacharias: G2197 for G1360 thy G4675 prayer G1162 is heard; G1522 and G2532 thy G4675 wife G1135 Elisabeth G1665 shall bear G1080 thee G4671 a son, G5207 and G2532 thou shalt call G2564 his G846 name G3686 John. G2491 And G2532 thou G4671 shalt have G2071 joy G5479 and G2532 gladness; G20 and G2532 many G4183 shall rejoice G5463 at G1909 his G846 birth. G1083 For G1063 he shall be G2071 great G3173 in the sight G1799 of the Lord, G2962 and G2532 shall drink G4095 neither G3364 wine G3631 nor G2532 strong drink; G4608 and G2532 he shall be filled G4130 with the Holy G40 Ghost, G4151 even G2089 from G1537 his G846 mother's G3384 womb. G2836 And G2532 many G4183 of the children G5207 of Israel G2474 shall he turn G1994 to G1909 the Lord G2962 their G846 God. G2316 And G2532 he G846 shall go G4281 before G1799 him G846 in G1722 the spirit G4151 and G2532 power G1411 of Elias, G2243 to turn G1994 the hearts G2588 of the fathers G3962 to G1909 the children, G5043 and G2532 the disobedient G545 to G1722 the wisdom G5428 of the just; G1342 to make ready G2090 a people G2992 prepared G2680 for the Lord. Mark 11:27-33 STRONG

And G2532 they come G2064 again G3825 to G1519 Jerusalem: G2414 and G2532 as he G846 was walking G4043 in G1722 the temple, G2411 there come G2064 to G4314 him G846 the chief priests, G749 and G2532 the scribes, G1122 and G2532 the elders, G4245 And G2532 say G3004 unto him, G846 By G1722 what G4169 authority G1849 doest thou G4160 these things? G5023 and G2532 who G5101 gave G1325 thee G4671 this G5026 authority G1849 to G2443 do G4160 these things? G5023 And G1161 Jesus G2424 answered G611 and said G2036 unto them, G846 I will G1905 also G2504 ask G1905 of you G5209 one G1520 question, G3056 and G2532 answer G611 me, G3427 and G2532 I will tell G2046 you G5213 by G1722 what G4169 authority G1849 I do G4160 these things. G5023 The baptism G908 of John, G2491 was G2258 it from G1537 heaven, G3772 or G2228 of G1537 men? G444 answer G611 me. G3427 And G2532 they reasoned G3049 with G4314 themselves, G1438 saying, G3004 If G1437 we shall say, G2036 From G1537 heaven; G3772 he will say, G2046 Why G1302 then G3767 did ye G4100 not G3756 believe G4100 him? G846 But G235 if G1437 we shall say, G2036 Of G1537 men; G444 they feared G5399 the people: G2992 for G1063 all G537 men counted G2192 John, G2491 that G3754 he was G2258 a prophet G4396 indeed. G3689 And G2532 they answered G611 and said G3004 unto Jesus, G2424 We G1492 cannot G3756 tell. G1492 And G2532 Jesus G2424 answering G611 saith G3004 unto them, G846 Neither G3761 do I G1473 tell G3004 you G5213 by G1722 what G4169 authority G1849 I do G4160 these things. G5023

Mark 1:1-11 STRONG

The beginning G746 of the gospel G2098 of Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 the Son G5207 of God; G2316 As G5613 it is written G1125 in G1722 the prophets, G4396 Behold, G2400 I G1473 send G649 my G3450 messenger G32 before G4253 thy G4675 face, G4383 which G3739 shall prepare G2680 thy G4675 way G3598 before G1715 thee. G4675 The voice G5456 of one crying G994 in G1722 the wilderness, G2048 Prepare ye G2090 the way G3598 of the Lord, G2962 make G4160 his G846 paths G5147 straight. G2117 John G2491 did G1096 baptize G907 in G1722 the wilderness, G2048 and G2532 preach G2784 the baptism G908 of repentance G3341 for G1519 the remission G859 of sins. G266 And G2532 there went out G1607 unto G4314 him G846 all G3956 the land G5561 of Judaea, G2449 and G2532 they of Jerusalem, G2415 and G2532 were G907 all G3956 baptized G907 of G5259 him G846 in G1722 the river G4215 of Jordan, G2446 confessing G1843 their G846 sins. G266 And G1161 John G2491 was G2258 clothed G1746 with camel's G2574 hair, G2359 and G2532 with a girdle G2223 of a skin G1193 about G4012 his G846 loins; G3751 and G2532 he did eat G2068 locusts G200 and G2532 wild G66 honey; G3192 And G2532 preached, G2784 saying, G3004 There cometh G2064 one mightier than G2478 I G3450 after G3694 me, G3450 the latchet G2438 of whose G3739 shoes G846 G5266 I am G1510 not G3756 worthy G2425 to stoop down G2955 and unloose. G3089 I G1473 indeed G3303 have baptized G907 you G5209 with G1722 water: G5204 but G1161 he G846 shall baptize G907 you G5209 with G1722 the Holy G40 Ghost. G4151 And G2532 it came to pass G1096 in G1722 those G1565 days, G2250 that Jesus G2424 came G2064 from G575 Nazareth G3478 of Galilee, G1056 and G2532 was baptized G907 of G5259 John G2491 in G1519 Jordan. G2446 And G2532 straightway G2112 coming up G305 out of G575 the water, G5204 he saw G1492 the heavens G3772 opened, G4977 and G2532 the Spirit G4151 like G5616 a dove G4058 descending G2597 upon G1909 him: G846 And G2532 there came G1096 a voice G5456 from G1537 heaven, G3772 saying, Thou G4771 art G1488 my G3450 beloved G27 Son, G5207 in G1722 whom G3739 I am well pleased. G2106

Matthew 17:12-13 STRONG

But G1161 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 That G3754 Elias G2243 is come G2064 already, G2235 and G2532 they knew G1921 him G846 not, G3756 but G235 have done G4160 unto G1722 him G846 whatsoever G3745 they listed. G2309 Likewise G3779 shall G3195 also G2532 the Son G5207 of man G444 suffer G3958 of G5259 them. G846 Then G5119 the disciples G3101 understood G4920 that G3754 he spake G2036 unto them G846 of G4012 John G2491 the Baptist. G910

Matthew 11:7-15 STRONG

And G1161 as G5130 they departed, G4198 Jesus G2424 began G756 to say G3004 unto the multitudes G3793 concerning G4012 John, G2491 What G5101 went ye G1831 out into G1519 the wilderness G2048 to see? G2300 A reed G2563 shaken G4531 with G5259 the wind? G417 But G235 what G5101 went ye out G1831 for to see? G1492 A man G444 clothed G294 in G1722 soft G3120 raiment? G2440 behold, G2400 they that wear G5409 soft G3120 clothing are G1526 in G1722 kings' G935 houses. G3624 But G235 what G5101 went ye out G1831 for to see? G1492 A prophet? G4396 yea, G3483 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 and G2532 more G4055 than a prophet. G4396 For G1063 this G3778 is G2076 he, of G4012 whom G3739 it is written, G1125 Behold, G2400 I G1473 send G649 my G3450 messenger G32 before G4253 thy G4675 face, G4383 which G3739 shall prepare G2680 thy G4675 way G3598 before G1715 thee. G4675 Verily G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 Among G1722 them that are born G1084 of women G1135 there hath G1453 not G3756 risen G1453 a greater than G3187 John G2491 the Baptist: G910 notwithstanding G1161 he that is least G3398 in G1722 the kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 is G2076 greater than G3187 he. G846 And G1161 from G575 the days G2250 of John G2491 the Baptist G910 until G2193 now G737 the kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 suffereth violence, G971 and G2532 the violent G973 take G726 it G846 by force. G726 For G1063 all G3956 the prophets G4396 and G2532 the law G3551 prophesied G4395 until G2193 John. G2491 And G2532 if G1487 ye will G2309 receive G1209 it, this G846 is G2076 Elias, G2243 which G3588 was for G3195 to come. G2064 He that hath G2192 ears G3775 to hear, G191 let him hear. G191

Commentary on Matthew 21 Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

CHAPTER 21

Mt 21:1-9. Christ's Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem on the First Day of the Week. ( = Mr 11:1-11; Lu 19:29-40; Joh 12:12-19).

For the exposition of this majestic scene—recorded, as will be seen, by all the Evangelists—see on Lu 19:29-40.

Mt 21:10-22. Stir about Him in the CitySecond Cleansing of the Temple, and Miracles ThereGlorious Vindication of the Children's TestimonyThe Barren Fig Tree Cursed, with Lessons from It. ( = Mr 11:11-26; Lu 19:45-48).

For the exposition, see on Lu 19:45-48; and Mr 11:12-26.

Mt 21:23-46. The Authority of Jesus Questioned and the ReplyThe Parables of the Two Sons, and of the Wicked Husbandman. ( = Mr 11:27-12:12; Lu 20:1-19).

Now commences, as Alford remarks, that series of parables and discourses of our Lord with His enemies, in which He develops, more completely than ever before, His hostility to their hypocrisy and iniquity: and so they are stirred up to compass His death.

The Authority of Jesus Questioned, and the Reply (Mt 21:23-27).

23. By what authority doest thou these things!—referring particularly to the expulsion of the buyers and sellers from the temple,

and who gave thee this authority?

24. And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, &c.

25. The baptism of John—meaning his whole mission and ministry, of which baptism was the proper character.

whence was it? from heaven, or of men?—What wisdom there was in this way of meeting their question will best appear by their reply.

If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?—"Why did ye not believe the testimony which he bore to Me, as the promised and expected Messiah?" for that was the burden of John's whole testimony.

26. But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people—rather, "the multitude." In Luke (Lu 20:6) it is, "all the people will stone us"—"stone us to death."

for all hold John as a prophet—Crooked, cringing hypocrites! No wonder Jesus gave you no answer.

27. And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell—Evidently their difficulty was, how to answer, so as neither to shake their determination to reject the claims of Christ nor damage their reputation with the people. For the truth itself they cared nothing whatever.

Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things—What composure and dignity of wisdom does our Lord here display, as He turns their question upon themselves, and, while revealing His knowledge of their hypocrisy, closes their mouths! Taking advantage of the surprise, silence, and awe produced by this reply, our Lord followed it up immediately by the two following parables.

Parable of the Two Sons (Mt 21:28-32).

28. But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first and said, Son, go work to-day in my vineyard—for true religion is a practical thing, a "bringing forth fruit unto God."

29. He answered and said, I will not—Trench notices the rudeness of this answer, and the total absence of any attempt to excuse such disobedience, both characteristic; representing careless, reckless sinners resisting God to His face.

30. And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir—"I, sir." The emphatic "I," here, denotes the self-righteous complacency which says, "God, I thank thee that I am not as other men" (Lu 18:11).

and went not—He did not "afterward repent" and refuse to go; for there was here no intention to go. It is the class that "say and do not" (Mt 23:3)—a falseness more abominable to God, says Stier, than any "I will not."

31. Whether of them twain did the will of his Father? They say unto him, The first—Now comes the application.

Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go—or, "are going"; even now entering, while ye hold back.

into the kingdom of God before you—The publicans and the harlots were the first son, who, when told to work in the Lord's vineyard, said, I will not; but afterwards repented and went. Their early life was a flat and flagrant refusal to do what they were commanded; it was one continued rebellion against the authority of God. The chief priests and the elders of the people, with whom our Lord was now speaking, were the second son, who said, I go, sir, but went not. They were early called, and all their life long professed obedience to God, but never rendered it; their life was one of continued disobedience.

32. For John came unto you in the way of righteousness—that is, calling you to repentance; as Noah is styled "a preacher of righteousness" (2Pe 2:5), when like the Baptist he warned the old world to "flee from the wrath to come."

and ye believed him not—They did not reject him; nay, they "were willing for a season to rejoice in his light" (Joh 5:35); but they would not receive his testimony to Jesus.

but the publicans and the harlots believed him—Of the publicans this is twice expressly recorded, Lu 3:12; 7:29. Of the harlots, then, the same may be taken for granted, though the fact is not expressly recorded. These outcasts gladly believed the testimony of John to the coming Saviour, and so hastened to Jesus when He came. See Lu 7:37; 15:1, &c.

and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him—Instead of being "provoked to jealousy" by their example, ye have seen them flocking to the Saviour and getting to heaven, unmoved.

Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen (Mt 21:33-46).

33. Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard—(See on Lu 13:6).

and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower—These details are taken, as is the basis of the parable itself, from that beautiful parable of Isa 5:1-7, in order to fix down the application and sustain it by Old Testament authority.

and let it out to husbandmen—These are just the ordinary spiritual guides of the people, under whose care and culture the fruits of righteousness are expected to spring up.

and went into a far country—"for a long time" (Lu 20:9), leaving the vineyard to the laws of the spiritual husbandry during the whole time of the Jewish economy. On this phraseology, see on Mr 4:26.

34. And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen—By these "servants" are meant the prophets and other extraordinary messengers, raised up from time to time. See on Mt 23:37.

that they might receive the fruits of it—Again see on Lu 13:6.

35. And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one—see Jer 37:15; 38:6.

and killed another—see Jer 26:20-23.

and stoned another—see 2Ch 24:21. Compare with this whole verse Mt 23:37, where our Lord reiterates these charges in the most melting strain.

36. Again, he sent other servants more than the first; and they did unto them likewise—see 2Ki 17:13; 2Ch 36:16, 18; Ne 9:26.

37. But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son—In Mark (Mr 12:6) this is most touchingly expressed: "Having yet therefore one son, His well-beloved, He sent Him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence My Son." Luke's version of it too (Lu 20:13) is striking: "Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send My beloved Son: it may be they will reverence Him when they see Him." Who does not see that our Lord here severs Himself, by the sharpest line of demarcation, from all merely human messengers, and claims for Himself Sonship in its loftiest sense? (Compare Heb 3:3-6). The expression, "It may be they will reverence My Son," is designed to teach the almost unimaginable guilt of not reverentially welcoming God's Son.

38. But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves—Compare Ge 37:18-20; Joh 11:47-53.

This is the heir—Sublime expression this of the great truth, that God's inheritance was destined for, and in due time is to come into the possession of, His own Son in our nature (Heb 1:2).

come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance—that so, from mere servants, we may become lords. This is the deep aim of the depraved heart; this is emphatically "the root of all evil."

39. And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard—compare Heb 13:11-13 ("without the gate—without the camp"); 1Ki 21:13; Joh 19:17.

and slew him.

40. When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh—This represents "the settling time," which, in the case of the Jewish ecclesiastics, was that judicial trial of the nation and its leaders which issued in the destruction of their whole state.

what will he do unto those husbandmen?

41. They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men—an emphatic alliteration not easily conveyed in English: "He will badly destroy those bad men," or "miserably destroy those miserable men," is something like it.

and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons—If this answer was given by the Pharisees, to whom our Lord addressed the parable, they thus unwittingly pronounced their own condemnation: as did David to Nathan the prophet (2Sa 12:5-7), and Simon the Pharisee to our Lord (Lu 7:43, &c.). But if it was given, as the two other Evangelists agree in representing it, by our Lord Himself, and the explicitness of the answer would seem to favor that supposition, then we can better explain the exclamation of the Pharisees which followed it, in Luke's report (Lu 20:16)—"And when they heard it, they said, God forbid"—His whole meaning now bursting upon them.

42. Jesus saith unto them. Did ye never read in the scriptures—(Ps 118:22, 23).

The stone which the builders rejected, &c.—A bright Messianic prophecy, which reappears in various forms (Isa 28:16, &c.), and was made glorious use of by Peter before the Sanhedrim (Ac 4:11). He recurs to it in his first epistle (1Pe 2:4-6).

43. Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God—God's visible Kingdom, or Church, upon earth, which up to this time stood in the seed of Abraham.

shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof—that is, the great evangelical community of the faithful, which, after the extrusion of the Jewish nation, would consist chiefly of Gentiles, until "all Israel should be saved" (Ro 11:25, 26). This vastly important statement is given by Matthew only.

44. And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder—The Kingdom of God is here a Temple, in the erection of which a certain stone, rejected as unsuitable by the spiritual builders, is, by the great Lord of the House, made the keystone of the whole. On that Stone the builders were now "falling" and being "broken" (Isa 8:15). They were sustaining great spiritual hurt; but soon that Stone should "fall upon them" and "grind them to powder" (Da 2:34, 35; Zec 12:2)—in their corporate capacity, in the tremendous destruction of Jerusalem, but personally, as unbelievers, in a more awful sense still.

45. And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables—referring to that of the Two Sons and this one of the Wicked Husbandmen.

they perceived that he spake of them.

46. But when they sought to lay hands on him—which Luke (Lu 20:19) says they did "the same hour," hardly able to restrain their rage.

they feared the multitude—rather, "the multitudes."

because they took him for a prophet—just as they feared to say John's baptism was of men, because the masses took him for a prophet (Mt 21:26). Miserable creatures! So, for this time, "they left Him and went their way" (Mr 12:12).
