Psalms 45:10-16 STRONG

Hearken, H8085 O daughter, H1323 and consider, H7200 and incline H5186 thine ear; H241 forget H7911 also thine own people, H5971 and thy father's H1 house; H1004 So shall the king H4428 greatly desire H183 thy beauty: H3308 for he is thy Lord; H113 and worship H7812 thou him. And the daughter H1323 of Tyre H6865 shall be there with a gift; H4503 even the rich H6223 among the people H5971 shall intreat H2470 thy favour. H6440 The king's H4428 daughter H1323 is all glorious H3520 within: H6441 her clothing H3830 is of wrought H4865 gold. H2091 She shall be brought H2986 unto the king H4428 in raiment of needlework: H7553 the virgins H1330 her companions H7464 that follow H310 her shall be brought H935 unto thee. With gladness H8057 and rejoicing H1524 shall they be brought: H2986 they shall enter H935 into the king's H4428 palace. H1964 Instead of thy fathers H1 shall be thy children, H1121 whom thou mayest make H7896 princes H8269 in all the earth. H776

Matthew 13:31-33 STRONG

Another G243 parable G3850 put he forth G3908 unto them, G846 saying, G3004 The kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 is G2076 like G3664 to a grain G2848 of mustard seed, G4615 which G3739 a man G444 took, G2983 and sowed G4687 in G1722 his G846 field: G68 Which G3739 indeed G3303 is G2076 the least G3398 of all G3956 seeds: G4690 but G1161 when G3752 it is grown, G837 it is G2076 the greatest G3187 among herbs, G3001 and G2532 becometh G1096 a tree, G1186 so that G5620 the birds G4071 of the air G3772 come G2064 and G2532 lodge G2681 in G1722 the branches G2798 thereof. G846 Another G243 parable G3850 spake he G2980 unto them; G846 The kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 is G2076 like G3664 unto leaven, G2219 which G3739 a woman G1135 took, G2983 and hid G1470 in G1519 three G5140 measures G4568 of meal, G224 till G2193 the whole G3650 was G3739 leavened. Matthew 13:44-47 STRONG

Again, G3825 the kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 is G2076 like G3664 unto treasure G2344 hid G2928 in G1722 a field; G68 the which G3739 when a man G444 hath found, G2147 he hideth, G2928 and G2532 for G575 joy G5479 thereof G846 goeth G5217 and G2532 selleth G4453 all G3956 that G3745 he hath, G2192 and G2532 buyeth G59 that G1565 field. G68 Again, G3825 the kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 is G2076 like G3664 unto a merchant G1713 man, G444 seeking G2212 goodly G2570 pearls: G3135 Who, G3739 when he had found G2147 one G1520 pearl G3135 of great price, G4186 went G565 and sold G4097 all G3956 that G3745 he had, G2192 and G2532 bought G59 it. G846 Again, G3825 the kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 is G2076 like G3664 unto a net, G4522 that was cast G906 into G1519 the sea, G2281 and G2532 gathered G4863 of G1537 every G3956 kind: G1085

Matthew 22:2-14 STRONG

The kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 is like G3666 unto a certain G444 king, G935 which G3748 made G4160 a marriage G1062 for his G846 son, G5207 And G2532 sent forth G649 his G846 servants G1401 to call G2564 them that were bidden G2564 to G1519 the wedding: G1062 and G2532 they would G2309 not G3756 come. G2064 Again, G3825 he sent forth G649 other G243 servants, G1401 saying, G3004 Tell G2036 them which are bidden, G2564 Behold, G2400 I have prepared G2090 my G3450 dinner: G712 my G3450 oxen G5022 and G2532 my fatlings G4619 are killed, G2380 and G2532 all things G3956 are ready: G2092 come G1205 unto G1519 the marriage. G1062 But G1161 they made light of G272 it, and went their ways, G565 one G3303 to G1519 his G2398 farm, G68 another G1161 to G1519 his G846 merchandise: G1711 And G1161 the remnant G3062 took G2902 his G846 servants, G1401 and entreated them spitefully, G5195 and G2532 slew G615 them. But G1161 when the king G935 heard G191 thereof, he was wroth: G3710 and G2532 he sent forth G3992 his G846 armies, G4753 and destroyed G622 those G1565 murderers, G5406 and G2532 burned up G1714 their G846 city. G4172 Then G5119 saith he G3004 to his G846 servants, G1401 G3303 The wedding G1062 is G2076 ready, G2092 but G1161 they which were bidden G2564 were G2258 not G3756 worthy. G514 Go ye G4198 therefore G3767 into G1909 the highways, G1327 G3598 and G2532 as many as G3745 G302 ye shall find, G2147 bid G2564 to G1519 the marriage. G1062 So G2532 those G1565 servants G1401 went out G1831 into G1519 the highways, G3598 and gathered together G4863 all G3956 as many as G3745 they found, G2147 both G5037 bad G4190 and G2532 good: G18 and G2532 the wedding G1062 was furnished G4130 with guests. G345 And G1161 when G1525 the king G935 came in G1525 to see G2300 the guests, G345 he saw G1492 there G1563 a man G444 which had G1746 not G3756 on G1746 a wedding G1062 garment: G1742 And G2532 he saith G3004 unto him, G846 Friend, G2083 how G4459 camest thou G1525 in hither G5602 not G3361 having G2192 a wedding G1062 garment? G1742 And G1161 he was speechless. G5392 Then G5119 said G2036 the king G935 to the servants, G1249 Bind G1210 him G846 hand G5495 and G2532 foot, G4228 and take G142 him G846 away, G142 and G2532 cast G1544 him into G1519 outer G1857 darkness; G4655 there G1563 shall be G2071 weeping G2805 and G2532 gnashing G1030 of teeth. G3599 For G1063 many G4183 are G1526 called, G2822 but G1161 few G3641 are chosen. G1588

Matthew 25:1-14 STRONG

Then G5119 shall the kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 be likened G3666 unto ten G1176 virgins, G3933 which G3748 took G2983 their G846 lamps, G2985 and went forth G1831 to meet G529 G1519 the bridegroom. G3566 And G1161 five G4002 of G1537 them G846 were G2258 wise, G5429 and G2532 five G4002 were foolish. G3474 They G3748 that were foolish G3474 took G2983 their G846 G1438 lamps, G2985 and took G2983 no G3756 oil G1637 with G3326 them: G1438 But G1161 the wise G5429 took G2983 oil G1637 in G1722 their G846 vessels G30 with G3326 their G846 lamps. G2985 While G1161 the bridegroom G3566 tarried, G5549 they all G3956 slumbered G3573 and G2532 slept. G2518 And G1161 at midnight G3319 G3571 there was a cry G2906 made, G1096 Behold, G2400 the bridegroom G3566 cometh; G2064 go ye out G1831 to G1519 meet G529 him. G846 Then G5119 all G3956 those G1565 virgins G3933 arose, G1453 and G2532 trimmed G2885 their G846 lamps. G2985 And G1161 the foolish G3474 said G2036 unto the wise, G5429 Give G1325 us G2254 of G1537 your G5216 oil; G1637 for G3754 our G2257 lamps G2985 are gone out. G4570 But G1161 the wise G5429 answered, G611 saying, G3004 Not so; lest G3379 there be G714 not G3756 enough G714 for us G2254 and G2532 you: G5213 but G1161 go ye G4198 rather G3123 to them G4314 that sell, G4453 and G2532 buy G59 for yourselves. G1438 And G1161 while they G846 went G565 to buy, G59 the bridegroom G3566 came; G2064 and G2532 they that were ready G2092 went in G1525 with G3326 him G846 to G1519 the marriage: G1062 and G2532 the door G2374 was shut. G2808 Afterward G1161 G5305 came G2064 also G2532 the other G3062 virgins, G3933 saying, G3004 Lord, G2962 Lord, G2962 open G455 to us. G2254 But G1161 he answered G611 and said, G2036 Verily G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 I know G1492 you G5209 not. G3756 Watch G1127 therefore, G3767 for G3754 ye know G1492 neither G3756 the day G2250 nor G3761 the hour G5610 wherein G1722 G3739 the Son G5207 of man G444 cometh. G2064 For G1063 the kingdom of heaven is as G5618 a man G444 travelling into a far country, G589 who called G2564 his own G2398 servants, G1401 and G2532 delivered G3860 unto them G846 his G846 goods. G5224

Luke 14:16-24 STRONG

Then G1161 said he G2036 unto him, G846 A certain G5100 man G444 made G4160 a great G3173 supper, G1173 and G2532 bade G2564 many: G4183 And G2532 sent G649 his G846 servant G1401 at supper G1173 time G5610 to say G2036 to them that were bidden, G2564 Come; G2064 for G3754 all things G3956 are G2076 now G2235 ready. G2092 And G2532 they all G3956 with G575 one G3391 consent began G756 to make excuse. G3868 The first G4413 said G2036 unto him, G846 I have bought G59 a piece of ground, G68 and G2532 I must G2192 needs G318 go G1831 and G2532 see G1492 it: G846 I pray G2065 thee G4571 have G2192 me G3165 excused. G3868 And G2532 another G2087 said, G2036 I have bought G59 five G4002 yoke G2201 of oxen, G1016 and G2532 I go G4198 to prove G1381 them: G846 I pray G2065 thee G4571 have G2192 me G3165 excused. G3868 And G2532 another G2087 said, G2036 I have married G1060 a wife, G1135 and G2532 therefore G1223 G5124 I cannot G3756 G1410 come. G2064 So G2532 that G1565 servant G1401 came, G3854 and shewed G518 his G846 lord G2962 these things. G5023 Then G5119 the master of the house G3617 being angry G3710 said G2036 to his G846 servant, G1401 Go out G1831 quickly G5030 into G1519 the streets G4113 and G2532 lanes G4505 of the city, G4172 and G2532 bring in G1521 hither G5602 the poor, G4434 and G2532 the maimed, G376 and G2532 the halt, G5560 and G2532 the blind. G5185 And G2532 the servant G1401 said, G2036 Lord, G2962 it is done G1096 as G5613 thou hast commanded, G2004 and G2532 yet G2089 there is G2076 room. G5117 And G2532 the lord G2962 said G2036 unto G4314 the servant, G1401 Go out G1831 into G1519 the highways G3598 and G2532 hedges, G5418 and G2532 compel G315 them to come in, G1525 that G2443 my G3450 house G3624 may be filled. G1072 For G1063 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 That G3754 none G3762 of those G1565 men G435 which G3588 were bidden G2564 shall taste G1089 of my G3450 supper. G1173

John 3:29-30 STRONG

He that hath G2192 the bride G3565 is G2076 the bridegroom: G3566 but G1161 the friend G5384 of the bridegroom, G3566 which G3588 standeth G2476 and G2532 heareth G191 him, G846 rejoiceth G5463 greatly G5479 because G1223 of the bridegroom's G3566 voice: G5456 this G3778 my G1699 joy G5479 therefore G3767 is fulfilled. G4137 He G1565 must G1163 increase, G837 but G1161 I G1691 must decrease. G1642

Ephesians 5:24-32 STRONG

Therefore G235 as G5618 the church G1577 is subject G5293 unto Christ, G5547 so G3779 G2532 let the wives G1135 be to their own G2398 husbands G435 in G1722 every thing. G3956 Husbands, G435 love G25 your G1438 wives, G1135 even as G2531 Christ G5547 also G2532 loved G25 the church, G1577 and G2532 gave G3860 himself G1438 for G5228 it; G846 That G2443 he might sanctify G37 and cleanse it G2511 with the washing G3067 of water G5204 by G1722 the word, G4487 That G2443 he might present G3936 it G846 to himself G1438 a glorious G1741 church, G1577 not G3361 having G2192 spot, G4696 or G2228 wrinkle, G4512 or G2228 any G5100 such thing; G5108 but G235 that G2443 it should be G5600 holy G40 and G2532 without blemish. G299 So G3779 ought G3784 men G435 to love G25 their G1438 wives G1135 as G5613 their own G1438 bodies. G4983 He that loveth G25 his G1438 wife G1135 loveth G25 himself. G1438 For G1063 no man G3762 ever yet G4218 hated G3404 his own G1438 flesh; G4561 but G235 nourisheth G1625 and G2532 cherisheth G2282 it, G846 even as G2531 G2532 the Lord G2962 the church: G1577 For G3754 we are G2070 members G3196 of his G846 body, G4983 of G1537 his G846 flesh, G4561 and G2532 of G1537 his G846 bones. G3747 For G473 this cause G5127 shall G2641 a man G444 leave G2641 his G846 father G3962 and G2532 mother, G3384 and G2532 shall be joined G4347 unto G4314 his G846 wife, G1135 and G2532 they two G1417 shall be G2071 one G1519 G3391 flesh. G4561 This G5124 is G2076 a great G3173 mystery: G3466 but G1161 I G1473 speak G3004 concerning G1519 Christ G5547 and G1519 G2532 the church. G1577

Revelation 19:7-9 STRONG

Let us be glad G5463 and G2532 rejoice, G21 and G2532 give G1325 honour G1391 to him: G846 for G3754 the marriage G1062 of the Lamb G721 is come, G2064 and G2532 his G846 wife G1135 hath made G2090 herself G1438 ready. G2090 And G2532 to her G846 was granted G1325 that G2443 she should be arrayed G4016 in fine linen, G1039 clean G2513 and G2532 white: G2986 for G1063 the fine linen G1039 is G2076 the righteousness G1345 of saints. G40 And G2532 he saith G3004 unto me, G3427 Write, G1125 Blessed G3107 are they which are called G2564 unto G1519 the marriage G1062 supper G1173 of the Lamb. G721 And G2532 he saith G3004 unto me, G3427 These G3778 are G1526 the true G228 sayings G3056 of God. G2316

Commentary on Matthew 22 Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

CHAPTER 22

Mt 22:1-14. Parable of the Marriage of the King's Son.

This is a different parable from that of the Great Supper, in Lu 14:15, &c., and is recorded by Matthew alone.

2. The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son—"In this parable," as Trench admirably remarks, "we see how the Lord is revealing Himself in ever clearer light as the central Person of the kingdom, giving here a far plainer hint than in the last parable of the nobility of His descent. There He was indeed the Son, the only and beloved one (Mr 12:6), of the Householder; but here His race is royal, and He appears as Himself at once the King and the King's Son (Ps 72:1). The last was a parable of the Old Testament history; and Christ is rather the last and greatest of the line of its prophets and teachers than the founder of a new kingdom. In that, God appears demanding something from men; in this, a parable of grace, God appears more as giving something to them. Thus, as often, the two complete each other: this taking up the matter where the other left it." The "marriage" of Jehovah to His people Israel was familiar to Jewish ears; and in Ps 45:1-17 this marriage is seen consummated in the Person of Messiah "THE King," Himself addressed as "God" and yet as anointed by "His God" with the oil of gladness above His fellows. These apparent contradictions (see on Lu 20:41-44) are resolved in this parable; and Jesus, in claiming to be this King's Son, serves Himself Heir to all that the prophets and sweet singers of Israel held forth as to Jehovah's ineffably near and endearing union to His people. But observe carefully, that THE Bride does not come into view in this parable; its design being to teach certain truths under the figure of guests at a wedding feast, and the want of a wedding garment, which would not have harmonized with the introduction of the Bride.

3. and sent forth his servants—representing all preachers of the Gospel.

to call them that were bidden—here meaning the Jews, who were "bidden," from the first choice of them onwards through every summons addressed to them by the prophets to hold themselves in readiness for the appearing of their King.

to the wedding—or the marriage festivities, when the preparations were all concluded.

and they would not come—as the issue of the whole ministry of the Baptist, our Lord Himself, and His apostles thereafter, too sadly showed.

4. my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready; come unto the marriage—This points to those Gospel calls after Christ's death, resurrection, ascension, and effusion of the Spirit, to which the parable could not directly allude, but when only it could be said, with strict propriety, "that all things were ready." Compare 1Co 5:7, 8, "Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; therefore, let us keep the feast"; also Joh 6:51, "I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread which I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."

5. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:

6. And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully—insulted them.

and slew them—These are two different classes of unbelievers: the one simply indifferent; the other absolutely hostile—the one, contemptuous scorners; the other, bitter persecutors.

7. But when the king—the Great God, who is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

heard thereof, he was wroth—at the affront put both on His Son, and on Himself who had deigned to invite them.

and he sent forth his armies—The Romans are here styled God's armies, just as the Assyrian is styled "the rod of His anger" (Isa 10:5), as being the executors of His judicial vengeance.

and destroyed those murderers—and in what vast numbers did they do it!

and burned up their city—Ah! Jerusalem, once "the city of the Great King" (Ps 48:2), and even up almost to this time (Mt 5:35); but now it is "their city"—just as our Lord, a day or two after this, said of the temple, where God had so long dwelt, "Behold your house is left unto you desolate" (Mt 23:38)! Compare Lu 19:43, 44.

8. The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy—for how should those be deemed worthy to sit down at His table who had affronted Him by their treatment of His gracious invitation?

9. Go ye therefore into the highways—the great outlets and thoroughfares, whether of town or country, where human beings are to be found.

and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage—that is, just as they are.

10. So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good—that is, without making any distinction between open sinners and the morally correct. The Gospel call fetched in Jews, Samaritans, and outlying heathen alike. Thus far the parable answers to that of "the Great Supper" (Lu 14:16, &c.). But the distinguishing feature of our parable is what follows:

11. And when the king came in to see the guests—Solemn expression this, of that omniscient inspection of every professed disciple of the Lord Jesus from age to age, in virtue of which his true character will hereafter be judicially proclaimed!

he saw there a man—This shows that it is the judgment of individuals which is intended in this latter part of the parable: the first part represents rather national judgment.

which had not on a wedding garment—The language here is drawn from the following remarkable passage in Zep 1:7, 8:—"Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord God; for the day of the Lord is at hand: for the Lord hath prepared a sacrifice, He hath bid His guests. And it shall come to pass in the day of the Lord's sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king's children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel." The custom in the East of presenting festival garments (see Ge 45:22; 2Ki 5:22), even though nor clearly proved, Is certainly presupposed here. It undoubtedly means something which they bring not of their own—for how could they have any such dress who were gathered in from the highways indiscriminately?—but which they receive as their appropriate dress. And what can that be but what is meant by "putting on the Lord Jesus," as "The Lord Our Righteousness?" (See Ps 45:13, 14). Nor could such language be strange to those in whose ears had so long resounded those words of prophetic joy: "I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, He hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels" (Isa 61:10).

12. Friend, how camest thou in hither, not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless—being self-condemned.

13. Then said the king to the servants—the angelic ministers of divine vengeance (as in Mt 13:41).

Bind him hand and foot—putting it out of his power to resist.

and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness—So Mt 8:12; 25:30. The expression is emphatic—"the darkness which is outside." To be "outside" at all—or, in the language of Re 22:15, to be "without" the heavenly city, excluded from its joyous nuptials and gladsome festivities—is sad enough of itself, without anything else. But to find themselves not only excluded from the brightness and glory and joy and felicity of the kingdom above, but thrust into a region of "darkness," with all its horrors, this is the dismal retribution here announced, that awaits the unworthy at the great day.

there—in that region and condition.

shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. See on Mt 13:42.

14. For many are called, but few are chosen—So Mt 19:30. See on Mt 20:16.
