1 And when the people H5971 complained, H596 it displeased H7451 H241 the LORD: H3068 and the LORD H3068 heard H8085 it; and his anger H639 was kindled; H2734 and the fire H784 of the LORD H3068 burnt H1197 among them, and consumed H398 them that were in the uttermost parts H7097 of the camp. H4264
And there went out H3318 fire H784 from the LORD, H3068 and devoured H398 them, and they died H4191 before H6440 the LORD. H3068
And Elijah H452 answered H6030 and said H1696 unto them, If I be a man H376 of God, H430 let fire H784 come down H3381 from heaven, H8064 and consume H398 thee and thy fifty. H2572 And the fire H784 of God H430 came down H3381 from heaven, H8064 and consumed H398 him and his fifty. H2572
And at Taberah, H8404 and at Massah, H4532 and at Kibrothhattaavah, H6914 ye provoked the LORD H3068 to wrath. H7107
And the people H5971 spake H1696 against God, H430 and against Moses, H4872 Wherefore have ye brought us up H5927 out of Egypt H4714 to die H4191 in the wilderness? H4057 for there is no bread, H3899 neither is there any water; H4325 and our soul H5315 loatheth H6973 this light H7052 bread. H3899
And there was no water H4325 for the congregation: H5712 and they gathered H6950 themselves together against Moses H4872 and against Aaron. H175 And the people H5971 chode H7378 with Moses, H4872 and spake, H559 saying, H559 Would God that H3863 we had died H1478 when our brethren H251 died H1478 before H6440 the LORD! H3068 And why have ye brought up H935 the congregation H6951 of the LORD H3068 into this wilderness, H4057 that we and our cattle H1165 should die H4191 there? And wherefore have ye made us to come up H5927 out of Egypt, H4714 to bring H935 us in unto this evil H7451 place? H4725 it is no place H4725 of seed, H2233 or of figs, H8384 or of vines, H1612 or of pomegranates; H7416 neither is there any water H4325 to drink. H8354
These G3778 are G1526 murmurers, G1113 complainers, G3202 walking G4198 after G2596 their own G846 lusts; G1939 and G2532 their G846 mouth G4750 speaketh G2980 great swelling G5246 words, having men's persons G4383 in admiration G2296 because G5484 of advantage. G5622
And G2532 if G1437 thy G4675 hand G5495 offend G4624 thee, G4571 cut G609 it G846 off: G609 it is G2076 better G2570 for thee G4671 to enter G1525 into G1519 life G2222 maimed, G2948 than G2228 having G2192 two G1417 hands G5495 to go G565 into G1519 hell, G1067 into G1519 the fire G4442 that never shall be quenched: G762 Where G3699 their G846 worm G4663 dieth G5053 not, G3756 and G2532 the fire G4442 is G4570 not G3756 quenched. G4570 And G2532 if G1437 thy G4675 foot G4228 offend G4624 thee, G4571 cut G609 it G846 off: G609 it is G2076 better G2570 for thee G4671 to enter G1525 halt G5560 into G1519 life, G2222 than G2228 having G2192 two G1417 feet G4228 to be cast G906 into G1519 hell, G1067 into G1519 the fire G4442 that never shall be quenched: G762 Where G3699 their G846 worm G4663 dieth G5053 not, G3756 and G2532 the fire G4442 is G4570 not G3756 quenched. G4570 And G2532 if G1437 thine G4675 eye G3788 offend G4624 thee, G4571 pluck G1544 it G846 out: G1544 it is G2076 better G2570 for thee G4671 to enter G1525 into G1519 the kingdom G932 of God G2316 with one eye, G3442 than G2228 having G2192 two G1417 eyes G3788 to be cast G906 into G1519 hell G1067 fire: G4442 Where G3699 their G846 worm G4663 dieth G5053 not, G3756 and G2532 the fire G4442 is G4570 not G3756 quenched. G4570 For G1063 every one G3956 shall be salted G233 with fire, G4442 and G2532 every G3956 sacrifice G2378 shall be salted G233 with salt. G251
For Tophet H8613 is ordained H6186 of old; H865 yea, for the king H4428 it is prepared; H3559 he hath made it deep H6009 and large: H7337 the pile H4071 thereof is fire H784 and much H7235 wood; H6086 the breath H5397 of the LORD, H3068 like a stream H5158 of brimstone, H1614 doth kindle H1197 it.
While he was yet speaking, H1696 there came H935 also another, and said, H559 The fire H784 of God H430 is fallen H5307 from heaven, H8064 and hath burned up H1197 the sheep, H6629 and the servants, H5288 and consumed H398 them; and I only am escaped H4422 alone to tell H5046 thee.
For a fire H784 is kindled H6919 in mine anger, H639 and shall burn H3344 unto the lowest H8482 hell, H7585 and shall consume H398 the earth H776 with her increase, H2981 and set on fire H3857 the foundations H4144 of the mountains. H2022
How he met H7136 thee by the way, H1870 and smote the hindmost H2179 of thee, even all that were feeble H2826 behind H310 thee, when thou wast faint H5889 and weary; H3023 and he feared H3373 not God. H430
And they departed H5265 from the mount H2022 of the LORD H3068 three H7969 days' H3117 journey: H1870 and the ark H727 of the covenant H1285 of the LORD H3068 went H5265 before H6440 them in the three H7969 days' H3117 journey, H1870 to search out H8446 a resting place H4496 for them.
Wherefore the people H5971 did chide H7378 with Moses, H4872 and said, H559 Give H5414 us water H4325 that we may drink. H8354 And Moses H4872 said H559 unto them, Why chide H7378 ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt H5254 the LORD? H3068 And the people H5971 thirsted H6770 there for water; H4325 and the people H5971 murmured H3885 against Moses, H4872 and said, H559 Wherefore is this that thou hast brought H5927 us up out of Egypt, H4714 to kill H4191 us and our children H1121 and our cattle H4735 with thirst? H6772
And the whole congregation H5712 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 murmured H3885 against Moses H4872 and Aaron H175 in the wilderness: H4057 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 said H559 unto them, Would to God H4310 H5414 we had died H4191 by the hand H3027 of the LORD H3068 in the land H776 of Egypt, H4714 when we sat H3427 by the flesh H1320 pots, H5518 and when we did eat H398 bread H3899 to the full; H7648 for ye have brought us forth H3318 into this wilderness, H4057 to kill H4191 this whole assembly H6951 with hunger. H7458
And when they came H935 to Marah, H4785 they could H3201 not drink H8354 of the waters H4325 of Marah, H4785 for they were bitter: H4751 therefore the name H8034 of it was called H7121 Marah. H4785 And the people H5971 murmured H3885 against Moses, H4872 saying, H559 What shall we drink? H8354
Behold, G2400 the hire G3408 of the labourers G2040 who G3588 have reaped down G270 your G5216 fields, G5561 which G3588 is of G575 you G5216 kept back by fraud, G650 crieth: G2896 and G2532 the cries G995 of them which have reaped G2325 are entered G1525 into G1519 the ears G3775 of the Lord G2962 of sabaoth. Commentary on Numbers 11 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 11
Hitherto things had gone pretty well in Israel; little interruption had been given to the methods of God's favour to them since the matter of the golden calf; the people seemed teachable in marshalling and purifying the camp, the princes devout and generous in dedicating the altar, and there was good hope that they would be in Canaan presently. But at this chapter begins a melancholy scene; the measures are all broken, God has turned to be their enemy, and fights against them-and it is sin that makes all this mischief.
Num 11:1-3
Here is,
Num 11:4-15
These verses represent things sadly unhinged and out of order in Israel, both the people and the prince uneasy.
Num 11:16-23
We have here God's gracious answer to both the foregoing complaints, wherein his goodness takes occasion from man's badness to appear so much the more illustrious.
Num 11:24-30
We have here the performance of God's word to Moses, that he should have help in the government of Israel.
Num 11:31-35
God, having performed his promise to Moses by giving him assessors in the government, thereby proving the power he has over the spirits of men by his Spirit, he here performs his promise to the people by giving them flesh, proving thereby his power over the inferior creatures and his dominion in the kingdom of nature.
