4 Labour H3021 not to be rich: H6238 cease H2308 from thine own wisdom. H998
Trust H982 in the LORD H3068 with all thine heart; H3820 and lean H8172 not unto thine own understanding. H998
Seest H7200 thou a man H376 wise H2450 in his own conceit? H5869 there is more hope H8615 of a fool H3684 than of him.
Woe H1945 unto them that are wise H2450 in their own eyes, H5869 and prudent H995 in their own sight! H6440
Labour G2038 not G3361 for the meat G1035 which G3588 perisheth, G622 but G235 for that meat G1035 which G3588 endureth G3306 unto G1519 everlasting G166 life, G2222 which G3739 the Son G5207 of man G444 shall give G1325 unto you: G5213 for G1063 him G5126 hath G4972 God G2316 the Father G3962 sealed. G4972
Be of the same G846 mind G5426 one toward another. G1519 G240 Mind G5426 not G3361 high things, G5308 but G235 condescend G4879 to men of low estate. G5011 Be G1096 not G3361 wise G5429 in G3844 your own conceits. G1438
And G1161 having G2192 food G1305 and G2532 raiment G4629 let us be G714 therewith G5125 content. G714 But G1161 they that will G1014 be rich G4147 fall G1706 into G1519 temptation G3986 and G2532 a snare, G3803 and G2532 into many G4183 foolish G453 and G2532 hurtful G983 lusts, G1939 which G3748 drown G1036 men G444 in G1519 destruction G3639 and G2532 perdition. G684 For G1063 the love of money G5365 is G2076 the root G4491 of all G3956 evil: G2556 which G3739 while some G5100 coveted after, G3713 they have erred G635 from G575 the faith, G4102 and G2532 pierced G4044 themselves G1438 through G4044 with many G4183 sorrows. G3601
He that is greedy H1214 of gain H1215 troubleth H5916 his own house; H1004 but he that hateth H8130 gifts H4979 shall live. H2421
Lay G2343 not G3361 up G2343 for yourselves G5213 treasures G2344 upon G1909 earth, G1093 where G3699 moth G4597 and G2532 rust G1035 doth corrupt, G853 and G2532 where G3699 thieves G2812 break through G1358 and G2532 steal: G2813
For G1063 I would G2309 not, G3756 brethren, G80 that ye G5209 should be ignorant G50 of this G5124 mystery, G3466 lest G3363 ye should be G5600 wise G5429 in G3844 your own conceits; G1438 that G3754 blindness G4457 in G575 part G3313 is happened G1096 to Israel, G2474 until G891 G3739 the fulness G4138 of the Gentiles G1484 be come in. Commentary on Proverbs 23 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 23
Pro 23:1-3
The sin we are here warned against is luxury and sensuality, and the indulgence of the appetite in eating and drinking, a sin that most easily besets us.
Pro 23:4-5
As some are given to appetite (v. 2) so others to covetousness, and those Solomon here takes to task. Men cheat themselves as much by setting their hearts on money (though it seems most substantial) as by setting them on dainties. Observe,
Pro 23:6-8
Those that are voluptuous and given to appetite (v. 2) are glad to be where there is good cheer stirring, and those that are covetous and saving, that they may spare at home, will be glad to get a dinner at another man's table; and therefore both are here advised not to be forward to accept of every man's invitation, but especially not to thrust themselves in uninvited. Observe,
Pro 23:9
We are here directed not to cast pearls before swine (Mt. 7:6) and not to expose things sacred to the contempt and ridicule of profane scoffers. It is our duty to take all fit occasions to speak of divine things; but,

Pro 23:19-28
Here is good advice for parents to give to their children; words are put into their mouths, that they may train them up in the way they should go. Here we have,

Solomon here gives fair warning against the sin of drunkenness, to confirm what he had said, v. 20.
