Let another man H2114 praise H1984 thee, and not thine own mouth; H6310 a stranger, H5237 and not thine own lips. H8193

1 Samuel 9:20-22 STRONG

And as for thine asses H860 that were lost H6 three H7969 days H3117 ago, H3117 set H7760 not thy mind H3820 on them; for they are found. H4672 And on whom is all the desire H2532 of Israel? H3478 Is it not on thee, and on all thy father's H1 house? H1004 And Saul H7586 answered H6030 and said, H559 Am not I a Benjamite, H1145 of the smallest H6996 of the tribes H7626 of Israel? H3478 and my family H4940 the least H6810 of all the families H4940 of the tribe H7626 of Benjamin? H1144 wherefore then speakest H1696 thou so H1697 to me? And Samuel H8050 took H3947 Saul H7586 and his servant, H5288 and brought H935 them into the parlour, H3957 and made them sit H5414 in the chiefest H7218 place H4725 among them that were bidden, H7121 which were about thirty H7970 persons. H376

1 Samuel 15:17 STRONG

1 Samuel 18:18-23 STRONG

And David H1732 said H559 unto Saul, H7586 Who am I? and what is my life, H2416 or my father's H1 family H4940 in Israel, H3478 that I should be son in law H2860 to the king? H4428 But it came to pass at the time H6256 when Merab H4764 Saul's H7586 daughter H1323 should have been given H5414 to David, H1732 that she was given H5414 unto Adriel H5741 the Meholathite H4259 to wife. H802 And Michal H4324 Saul's H7586 daughter H1323 loved H157 David: H1732 and they told H5046 Saul, H7586 and the thing H1697 pleased H3474 H5869 him. And Saul H7586 said, H559 I will give H5414 him her, that she may be a snare H4170 to him, and that the hand H3027 of the Philistines H6430 may be against him. Wherefore Saul H7586 said H559 to David, H1732 Thou shalt this day H3117 be my son in law H2859 in the one of the twain. H8147 And Saul H7586 commanded H6680 his servants, H5650 saying, Commune H1696 with David H1732 secretly, H3909 and say, H559 Behold, the king H4428 hath delight H2654 in thee, and all his servants H5650 love H157 thee: now therefore be the king's H4428 son in law. H2859 And Saul's H7586 servants H5650 spake H1696 those words H1697 in the ears H241 of David. H1732 And David H1732 said, H559 Seemeth H5869 it to you a light H7043 thing to be a king's H4428 son in law, H2859 seeing that I am a poor H7326 man, H376 and lightly esteemed? H7034

2 Samuel 7:8-17 STRONG

Now therefore so shalt thou say H559 unto my servant H5650 David, H1732 Thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts, H6635 I took H3947 thee from the sheepcote, H5116 from following H310 the sheep, H6629 to be ruler H5057 over my people, H5971 over Israel: H3478 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, H1980 and have cut off H3772 all thine enemies H341 out of thy sight, H6440 and have made H6213 thee a great H1419 name, H8034 like unto the name H8034 of the great H1419 men that are in the earth. H776 Moreover I will appoint H7760 a place H4725 for my people H5971 Israel, H3478 and will plant H5193 them, that they may dwell H7931 in a place of their own, and move H7264 no more; neither shall the children H1121 of wickedness H5766 afflict H6031 them any more, H3254 as beforetime, H7223 And as since the time H3117 that I commanded H6680 judges H8199 to be over my people H5971 Israel, H3478 and have caused thee to rest H5117 from all thine enemies. H341 Also the LORD H3068 telleth H5046 thee that he will make H6213 thee an house. H1004 And when thy days H3117 be fulfilled, H4390 and thou shalt sleep H7901 with thy fathers, H1 I will set up H6965 thy seed H2233 after H310 thee, which shall proceed H3318 out of thy bowels, H4578 and I will establish H3559 his kingdom. H4467 He shall build H1129 an house H1004 for my name, H8034 and I will stablish H3559 the throne H3678 of his kingdom H4467 for H5704 ever. H5769 I will be his father, H1 and he shall be my son. H1121 If he commit iniquity, H5753 I will chasten H3198 him with the rod H7626 of men, H582 and with the stripes H5061 of the children H1121 of men: H120 But my mercy H2617 shall not depart away H5493 from him, as I took H5493 it from Saul, H7586 whom I put away H5493 before H6440 thee. And thine house H1004 and thy kingdom H4467 shall be established H539 for H5704 ever H5769 before H6440 thee: thy throne H3678 shall be established H3559 for H5704 ever. H5769 According to all these words, H1697 and according to all this vision, H2384 so did Nathan H5416 speak H1696 unto David. H1732

Psalms 131:1 STRONG

[[A Song H7892 of degrees H4609 of David.]] H1732 LORD, H3068 my heart H3820 is not haughty, H1361 nor mine eyes H5869 lofty: H7311 neither do I exercise H1980 myself in great matters, H1419 or in things too high H6381 for me.

Proverbs 16:19 STRONG

Better H2896 it is to be of an humble H8217 spirit H7307 with the lowly, H6035 H6041 than to divide H2505 the spoil H7998 with the proud. H1343

Jeremiah 1:6-10 STRONG

Then said H559 I, Ah, H162 Lord H136 GOD! H3069 behold, I cannot H3045 speak: H1696 for I am a child. H5288 But the LORD H3068 said H559 unto me, Say H559 not, I am a child: H5288 for thou shalt go H3212 to all that I shall send H7971 thee, and whatsoever I command H6680 thee thou shalt speak. H1696 Be not afraid H3372 of their faces: H6440 for I am with thee to deliver H5337 thee, saith H5002 the LORD. H3068 Then the LORD H3068 put forth H7971 his hand, H3027 and touched H5060 my mouth. H6310 And the LORD H3068 said H559 unto me, Behold, I have put H5414 my words H1697 in thy mouth. H6310 See, H7200 I have this day H3117 set H6485 thee over the nations H1471 and over the kingdoms, H4467 to root out, H5428 and to pull down, H5422 and to destroy, H6 and to throw down, H2040 to build, H1129 and to plant. H5193

Amos 7:12-15 STRONG

Also Amaziah H558 said H559 unto Amos, H5986 O thou seer, H2374 go, H3212 flee thee away H1272 into the land H776 of Judah, H3063 and there eat H398 bread, H3899 and prophesy H5012 there: But prophesy H5012 not again H3254 any more at Bethel: H1008 for it is the king's H4428 chapel, H4720 and it is the king's H4467 court. H1004 Then answered H6030 Amos, H5986 and said H559 to Amaziah, H558 I was no prophet, H5030 neither was I a prophet's H5030 son; H1121 but I was an herdman, H951 and a gatherer H1103 of sycomore fruit: H8256 And the LORD H3068 took H3947 me as I followed H310 the flock, H6629 and the LORD H3068 said H559 unto me, Go, H3212 prophesy H5012 unto my people H5971 Israel. Commentary on Proverbs 25 Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

CHAPTER 25

Pr 25:1-28.

1. The character of these proverbs sustains the title (see Introduction).

also—refers to the former part of the book.

copied out—literally, "transferred," that is, from some other book to this; not given from memory.

2. God's unsearchableness impresses us with awe (compare Isa 45:15; Ro 11:33). But kings, being finite, should confer with wise counsellors;

3. Ye wisely keeping state secrets, which to common men are as inaccessible heights and depths.

4, 5. As separating impurities from ore leaves pure silver, so taking from a king wicked counsellors leaves a wise and beneficent government.

5. before—or, "in presence of," as courtiers stood about a king.

6, 7. Do not intrude into the presence of the king, for the elevation of the humble is honorable, but the humbling of the proud disgraceful (Lu 14:8-10).

8. (Compare Pr 3:30).

lest … shame—lest you do what you ought not, when shamed by defeat, or "lest thou art shut out from doing any thing."

9, 10. (Compare Mt 5:25, Margin).

secret—that is, of your opponent, for his disadvantage, and so you be disgraced, not having discussed your difficulties with him.

11. a word fitly—literally, "quickly," as wheels roll, just in time. The comparison as apples … silver gives a like sense.

apples, &c.—either real apples of golden color, in a silver network basket, or imitations on silver embroidery.

12. Those who desire to know and do rightly, most highly esteem good counsel (Pr 9:9; 15:31). The listening ear is better than one hung with gold.

13. Snow from mountains was used to cool drinks; so refreshing is a faithful messenger (Pr 13:17).

14. clouds—literally, "vapors" (Jer 10:13), clouds only in appearance.

a false gift—promised, but not given.

15. Gentleness and kindness overcome the most powerful and obstinate.

long forbearing—or, "slowness to anger" (Pr 14:29; 15:18).

16, 17. A comparison, as a surfeit of honey produces physical disgust, so your company, however agreeable in moderation, may, if excessive, lead your friend to hate you.

18. A false witness is as destructive to reputation, as such weapons to the body (Pr 24:28).

beareth … witness—literally, "answereth questions," as before a judge, against his neighbor.

19. Treachery annoys as well as deceives.

20. Not only is the incongruity of songs (that is, joyful) and sadness meant, but an accession of sadness, by want of sympathy, is implied.

21, 22. (Compare Mt 5:44; Ro 12:20). As metals are melted by heaping coals upon them, so is the heart softened by kindness.

23. Better, "As the north wind bringeth forth (Ps 90:2) or produces rain, so does a concealed or slandering tongue produce anger."

24. (Compare Pr 21:9, 19).

25. (Compare Pr 25:13).

good news—that is, of some loved interest or absent friend, the more grateful as coming from afar.

26. From troubled fountains and corrupt springs no healthy water is to be had, so when the righteous are oppressed by the wicked, their power for good is lessened or destroyed.

27. Satiety surfeits (Pr 25:16); so men who are self-glorious find shame.

is not glory—"not" is supplied from the first clause, or "is grievous," in which sense a similar word is used (Pr 27:2).

28. Such are exposed to the incursions of evil thoughts and successful temptations.
