4 He taught H3384 me also, and said H559 unto me, Let thine heart H3820 retain H8551 my words: H1697 keep H8104 my commandments, H4687 and live. H2421
Keep H8104 my commandments, H4687 and live; H2421 and my law H8451 as the apple H380 of thine eye. H5869
And, G2532 ye fathers, G3962 provoke G3949 not G3361 your G5216 children G5043 to wrath: G3949 but G235 bring G1625 them G846 up G1625 in G1722 the nurture G3809 and G2532 admonition G3559 of the Lord. G2962
And thou, Solomon H8010 my son, H1121 know H3045 thou the God H430 of thy father, H1 and serve H5647 him with a perfect H8003 heart H3820 and with a willing H2655 mind: H5315 for the LORD H3068 searcheth H1875 all hearts, H3824 and understandeth H995 all the imaginations H3336 of the thoughts: H4284 if thou seek H1875 him, he will be found H4672 of thee; but if thou forsake H5800 him, he will cast thee off H2186 for ever. H5703
My son, H1121 forget H7911 not my law; H8451 but let thine heart H3820 keep H5341 my commandments: H4687
Incline H5186 your ear, H241 and come H3212 unto me: hear, H8085 and your soul H5315 shall live; H2421 and I will make H3772 an everlasting H5769 covenant H1285 with you, even the sure H539 mercies H2617 of David. H1732
For I know H3045 him, that H834 he will command H6680 his children H1121 and his household H1004 after him, H310 and they shall keep H8104 the way H1870 of the LORD, H3068 to do H6213 justice H6666 and judgment; H4941 that the LORD H3068 may bring H935 upon Abraham H85 that which he hath spoken H1696 of him.
After the doings H4639 of the land H776 of Egypt, H4714 wherein ye dwelt, H3427 shall ye not do: H6213 and after the doings H4639 of the land H776 of Canaan, H3667 whither I bring H935 you, shall ye not do: H6213 neither shall ye walk H3212 in their ordinances. H2708 Ye shall do H6213 my judgments, H4941 and keep H8104 mine ordinances, H2708 to walk H3212 therein: I am the LORD H3068 your God. H430 Ye shall therefore keep H8104 my statutes, H2708 and my judgments: H4941 which H834 if a man H120 do, H6213 he shall live H2425 in them: I am the LORD. H3068
Only take heed H8104 to thyself, and keep H8104 thy soul H5315 diligently, H3966 lest thou forget H7911 the things H1697 which thine eyes H5869 have seen, H7200 and lest they depart H5493 from thy heart H3824 all the days H3117 of thy life: H2416 but teach H3045 them thy sons, H1121 and thy sons' H1121 sons; H1121
Now, my son, H1121 the LORD H3068 be with thee; and prosper H6743 thou, and build H1129 the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 thy God, H430 as he hath said H1696 of thee. Only the LORD H3068 give H5414 thee wisdom H7922 and understanding, H998 and give thee charge H6680 concerning Israel, H3478 that thou mayest keep H8104 the law H8451 of the LORD H3068 thy God. H430 Then shalt thou prosper, H6743 if thou takest heed H8104 to fulfil H6213 the statutes H2706 and judgments H4941 which the LORD H3068 charged H6680 Moses H4872 with concerning Israel: H3478 be strong, H2388 and of good courage; H553 dread H3372 not, nor be dismayed. H2865 Now, behold, in my trouble H6040 I have prepared H3559 for the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 an hundred H3967 thousand H505 talents H3603 of gold, H2091 and a thousand H505 thousand H505 talents H3603 of silver; H3701 and of brass H5178 and iron H1270 without weight; H4948 for it is in abundance: H7230 timber H6086 also and stone H68 have I prepared; H3559 and thou mayest add H3254 thereto. Moreover there are workmen H6213 H4399 with thee in abundance, H7230 hewers H2672 and workers H2796 of stone H68 and timber, H6086 and all manner of cunning men H2450 for every manner of work. H4399 Of the gold, H2091 the silver, H3701 and the brass, H5178 and the iron, H1270 there is no number. H4557 Arise H6965 therefore, and be doing, H6213 and the LORD H3068 be with thee.
Thy word H565 have I hid H6845 in mine heart, H3820 that I might not sin H2398 against thee.
And G2532 I know G1492 that G3754 his G846 commandment G1785 is G2076 life G2222 everlasting: G166 whatsoever G3739 I G1473 speak G2980 therefore, G3767 even as G2531 the Father G3962 said G2046 unto me, G3427 so G3779 I speak. G2980
When I call G2983 to remembrance G5280 the unfeigned G505 faith G4102 that is in G1722 thee, G4671 which G3748 dwelt G1774 first G4412 in G1722 thy G4675 grandmother G3125 Lois, G3090 and G2532 thy G4675 mother G3384 Eunice; G2131 and G1161 I am persuaded G3982 that G3754 in G1722 thee G4671 also. Commentary on Proverbs 4 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 4
When the things of God are to be taught precept must be upon precept, and line upon line, not only because the things themselves are of great worth and weight, but because men's minds, at the best, are unapt to admit them and commonly prejudiced against them; and therefore Solomon, in this chapter, with a great variety of expression and a pleasant powerful flood of divine eloquence, inculcates the same things that he had pressed upon us in the foregoing chapters. Here is,
So plainly, so pressingly, is the case laid before us, that we shall be for ever inexcusable if we perish in our folly.
Pro 4:1-13
Here we have,
Pro 4:14-19
Some make David's instructions to Solomon, which began v. 4, to continue to the end of the chapter; nay, some continue them to the end of the ninth chapter; but it is more probable that Solomon begins here again, if not sooner. In these verses, having exhorted us to walk in the paths of wisdom, he cautions us against the path of the wicked.
Pro 4:20-27
Solomon, having warned us not to do evil, here teaches us how to do well. It is not enough for us to shun the occasions of sin, but we must study the methods of duty.
